Don't bother even renting this game. It is by far the worst 360 game I've played. The most annoying feature is lack of configurable controls. The X-axis camera is inverted from what you'd typically find in a FPS game, and you can't change it. The camera gets blocked at the presence of any walls, as it doesn't move toward the character when encountering obstacles.
Definately do not buy this for kids. The game will only frustrate them. It has too many glitches, too many opportunities to accidently lose lives, and too many usability problems, taking away any chance of this game being remotely fun.
Thoroughly disappointed

Good job, sonic team! You've done it again.
The recent releases for the sonic franchise have been pretty disappointing, for lack of a better word, with an exception of Sonic Rush for NDS, and even with lowered expectation, this newest sonic blows hardest yet.
First of all, WHAT IS WRONG WITH SCRIPTWRITERS? I didn't know Sega hired potheads. The last time I checked, Sonic had a girlfriend named Amy, a hedgehog like himself. Now they ignored Amy completely and gave Sonic a new girlfriend. Yeah, now he's with a human princess and it just looks damn weird. A human 3x times the size of Sonic in his arms, and together they're running on a flower field. WOOPIEEEE!!
Second, WHAT IS WRONG WITH PROGRAMMERS? There are games with way better graphics than this garbage, and NONE OF THEM HAD THIS MUCH LOADING TIME. You go in a town, (wth, a town? is this really Sonic? sounds like a Japanese RPG...yeah I agree. sonic team had no clue what they were doing...) and you talk to a guy. LOADING. You listen to him blabber. LOADING. You're done listening. LOADING. Okay, you're off to go. You think I'm joking? No sir just try it yourself and be annoyed if you have nothing better to do.
Third, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE GAMEPLAY? I always liked Sonic for its speedy gameplay, but this time they pushed too far, and too many annoying monsters on the way to really enjoy the ride. If I wanted a game where you must defeat robotic-looking monsters, I would've definitely picked another game.
So basically, sonic team had no clue how to make a sonic, so what they made is a mix of many different games, with terrible loading time and terrible storyline. Music isn't that great either. Mediocre game at most, terrible in my opinion. Good luck if you're still going to buy this. =]

Let me start this review by saying two things: a) I never write reviews and b) I cannot stand when developers try to leverage brand to sell things, and then don't back up products with any substance.
In this case, the product is so bad, that I felt compelled to save other gamers the waste of time and money by writing this. Also I felt like developers knew that Sonic had a long lived and decent brand, and that they could push anything through the stores. As I described it to my gaming friends, Sonic for Xbox 360 is "offensively bad"
To make it simple:
- Bad graphics (non very distinguished from Dreamcast version, and falls way short of what other 360 games have to offer)
- Bad Play control (cannot customize controls, terrible camera angles)
- Bad Music (thankfully Xbox allows you to play it from other sources)
- Abysmal story and cinema cuts (you'd think they are addressing an audience that is 3 years old, not to mention that Sonic is totally anachronistic to what would be a decent Final Fantasy setting)
- Super buggy (at least this part of it is mildly entertaining, if not laughable)

there are very few video games which lack at least one good thing to mention. This is one of them. This game is a total waste of time and money. The graphics are cheesy, the characters movements are choppy and erratic and at times they get stuck in a corner, the load time between scenes is extremely long. What irritates me most is that when starting a town mission, there is often a load screen, then a 5 second cutscene, and then another long load screen. Very very disappointing.
Bad.

Everyone else has said it and I'll say it too. Horrible camera angles and extremely awkward controls. Load times are bad too. You'll find yourself waiting 30 seconds or more just to load a cheesy 3 second video clip followed by 30 seconds or more just to load the next stage. I've gotten past a few stages with no unlocked achievements to speak of and my gamer score for this game still rests at zero despite my internal game score of high thousands. There are too many points in the game where you aren't really playing at all but simply pressing the jump button at crucial times and the springs and dash panels do all the rest. The game is a "learn as you go" style of play wherein the learning is not intuitive and you must figure it out by losing a life or two. This game is a disgrace to the Sonic franchise.
Camera angles and control make this game horrible

I never write reviews on anything, although I enjoy reading other people's reviews (so thanks to everyone who does write them). This game was so frustrating to play that I had to write about how horrible it is. I recently got an Xbox360 and my girl friend decided to rent Sonic since she was a big original Sonic fan. We have been playing it for about 2 hours now and it is nearly impossible to control the character. The camera angles seem to be random and you have no way to control them. When fighting enemies you will be facing one, press the A (or X, depending on which character you are at the time) button to attack and the camera angles changes drastically. Enemy fire is coming in from all directions and there seems to be no way to smoothly control the character to attack them back. As another reviewer mentioned, you can't configure the controls at all. The only options are for video and audio! So in order to play you have to re-train your brain for the horrible user interface they put into this game. I'm used to an inverted look and total configurability (from playing Halo 2). As I was playing this game, I kept asking myself how a child would be able to play this game. I'm not sure how one could.
Bottom line: Don't buy this game, it is nearly impossible to play. I'm sure that after 5-10 hours of practice that I could have trained myself to handle the controls, but who wants to put that much time into just relearning? In the mean time you end up playing the same sequences over and over again! I left the room feeling extremely frustrated. I can't believe that a company could actually release a game that is this bad.
Give it a play, but don't expect much.

Though Sega lied about much of the problems from the Adventure series being fixed, those that can handle that and the load time will find in intriguing and somewhat fun addition to the Sonic series.
Though the town graphics seem sorta Dreamcasty, the rest of the games main stages are very fun and graphically appealing. Great use of colors and most of the textures are excellent. Many cut scenes are almost CG in quality, and despite the characters taller appearance, they do look really good. Voices are also well done.
As for the gameplay it is kind of messy still. Sega said they would have all the problems fixed from the Adventure series, but all in all some are even worse. For example in one stage your snowboarding down and suddenly the camera flips opposite, with no warning or anything. Later levels do this as well, but you eventually do learn when it flips (after several uncessary deaths).
Many unecessary deaths happen, and you'll learn to be very patient and sometimes will have to take it slow through the levels. Even the slightest nudge of the stick will send you careening to your death.
As for the camera, will it's very restricted too. you can reset it with L/R triggers, but the range is very limited. Tail's new ring bomb move is annoying in that everytime you fire it , it resets back to a default view, even with multiple enemies to hit.
Load times are horrendous. At one point you meet Tails, it loads for 15 seconds, you talk for about 15 seconds, then another 15 second load. This happens numerous times throughou the game, and on the action stages expect 2-3 different 15 second load times at intervals throughout the levels.
If you are a big Sonic fan, and can handle the issues Sega has had years to fix but hasn't, you'll find the game very rewarding and enjoyable once you get the hang of the levels. Otherwise give it a rent, it'll probably be one you either love or hate.
Dissapointing..

I was very excited to get this game when it first came out. I must say that the excitement wore off pretty quickly as I played through the game. It's definitely got it's high points, but the camera angles, the scattered storylines, awkward controls, and extremely long load times kill the potential.
Sonic really hasn't been the same since the Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast, and also since the days of the Genesis..I'm hoping that the upcoming Sonic & The Secret Rings will help Sega redeem themselves.
This game's definitely fun to play, but there's too many flaws.
NO Stars!!! C-R-A-P!!!!!! Not good enough for kids either.

Very bad controls, won't mention the old school looking GFX (are we sure this was meant for the 360??). Your view gets blocked more often than you play, easily die due to crapy camera style. Oh, lets not even talk about the hefty pricetag, thanks for nothing. RENT this if for some reason you want to torture yourself. If you want some sonic action break out the sega or dreamcast.

Excessively frequent load screens, horrible animations, terrible camera, and absolutely BORING gameplay make this one of the worst games of all time on any system. I'm amazed that this title would pass quality control. The 360 has so much better to offer, skip this one completely and grab "Gears of War", "Oblivion", or "Lost Planet". "Viva Pinata" for the kiddies and sim fans.
