This game has a lot going for it, the most notable feature being a return to two-dimentions with 3D elements. The concept of blazing speed and a game that practically played itself never quite translated properly to 3D, which I personally attribute to the extra space. Back in two dimentions it's possible to present the player with a fast paced course that will yank control away and give it back in just the right dosage to get the adrenaline flowing and at the same time present the player with a sense of unbroken speed.
I'd also like to heap praise upon Sonics stylus controlled Sonic 2 style bonus stages, and I found that the hang glider stage and the return of old classics like gravity varied levels, hydroplaning, and spiral loops have at last returned in a manageable 2D format, and a decent soundtrack is once again overlaid with this newest offering. The introduction of jump tricks and Sonics "dash meter" add an almost Tony Hawk feel to large jumps and ramps, and give the player something new to do while the game plays itself.
However, this game has several flaws that I simply couldn't get past. For one thing, the game suffers from the same campy dialogue and didactic "let's all be freinds" messages that have plagued the House of Sonic for the better part of ten years now. The introduction of yet another new character is (for a change) welcomed in the form of Blaze, whose fire special effects make her an interesting play. The next note is a problem that I have encountered hasn't really been faced by Sonic games in the past. There are an inordinant number of bottomless death pits, which breaks strictly from Sonic tradition. The idea of instant death upon failure to successfully complete a jumping puzzle has appeared before in the sky levels, however, in this game almost every stage comes with a large pitfall with no alternate route at the bottom. The third issue I take with this game is the redundant bosses from stages 1 and 5 respectively, who present the player with an almost identical challenge. Last, I find that this is probably the most easily defeated Death Egg variant that I've ever palyed against, and I'm deeply dissapointed. I would call everyone to remember the Death Egg from Sonic and Knuckles, that presented the player with a genuine challenge the likes of which this newest Death Egg (or whatever we like to call the end game giant robot boss these days) does not.
Overall I'm very happy to see Sonic back in two dimentions, but I'm afrad that he's still getting bogged down with some of the campy sidekicks and failed experiments from his 3D career, and that unfortunately weighs down my opinion of this game, but I would still reccomend playing it, I'd just suggest that you borrow it from a freind rather than pay the full retail for it.
great game but not for a small screen

All the elements of the classic 2D we all fell in love with but it moves so fast on such a small screen that I didn't feel any semblance of a sense of control over what sonic was doing.

Before I hadded this game, I used to play the sonic games for gameboy advance. When I got this game and I started playing, I found it much better than the gameboy advance ones. You can use 2 players, Sonic the hedgehog or Blaze the Cat. You move with the arrow pad, jump with either the a and b buttons, and boost with the x or y buttons. You use the r button to do like an extra jump with sonic, and hover down with blaze. There's a bar at the left side of the screen which tells how many points do you have to use the boost.Every time you kill an enemy you kill an enemy you get more points. You also get more when you press the r button to make a somersault when you are flying in the air or when you are grinding you also get more points.
This game is amazing. Eventhough it's 2D, graphics are clear and the gameplay is great. At first you may feel it too fast, but later you may get used to it. There are are 7 zones and a final boss. Each zone has 2 stages and a boss. Bosses are in a kind of 3D where you cannot move around, but they are good. Both sonic and blaze play the same stages but in different orders. There are special stages which can only be played by sonic. On a normal stage there are some wheels hidden. If you find one you can use it to get to a special stage. A special stage is in 3D, where sonic runs automatically, and you make him move from side to side with the stylus to dodge the obstacles and get rings. When you clear a special stage you get a chaos emerald. If you get all 7 chaos emeralds you unlock an extra zone.
Multiplayer mode can be played with either one game card or a game card for each player, but I see no difference in it, you can play nothing else with 2 game cards. Up to 2 players can play, It's about racing through the stages, the first one to clear it wins.
There are some things of this game I didn't liked that were the reasons why I gave it 4 stars, not 5 stars. I think stages will be better in 3D, which will probably be possible on a nintendo DS console. I also felt the story too short, and I got through the stages too fast. Also, when you get through the game, there's nothing to do more than clear the stages you've already cleared, like many other sonic games.
In all, this is a great game, and If you want a game of sonic for your nintendo DS, don't wait to buy it.
Sonic Rush is a winner!

The Nintendo DS was designed as a new handheld with 2 screens for double the gameplay. Of course, with something as cool as that, Sonic just had to make an appearance.
Sonic is teaming up with Princess Blaze the Cat, and they are on their way to defeat Dr. Eggman and his clone Nega. Sonic is, as usual, very speedy, while Blaze uses her firepowers.
This game has the usual Green Hill, Water, Casino and Sky Base zones, and the characters have "Burst mode" to make them speedier than ever. The emerald special stages are 3D tube run stages, and you get to move Sonic around with the magic pen.
I must admit, some of the stages were hard, but I was able to take another reviewer's advice. Once you complete all of Sonic and Blaze's stages, you will face a challenging, but defeatable boss, and you play as Super Sonic and Hyper Blaze. Super Sonic has to push obstacles toward the boss while Hyper Blaze gets to hack up flaming hairballs. (She is a cat, after all!)
Overall, 5 stars. A certain must-have for those who have a DS, and I hope more Sonic DS games are on the way!

What was great about the old Sonic games?
-Fast, fun, addicting gameplay that gradually increased in difficulty over time
-Graphics that kept up with the speed beautifully
-Catchy music
-A simple story that is reason enough for a sequel
-It was all about Sonic...
What is great about the new Sonic games?
-Better graphics and music
-Sonic Advance 2's "Burst Mode"
-Pulling off different tricks and moves like grinding et. al.
While Sonic Adventure was seen by many as the next evolution in Sonic games, I personally thought that Sonic Advance 2 was more so than Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure didn't focus on the core Sonic gameplay enough, the 3D was (and is still) touch-and-go, and a lot of the new characters are simply copies of the existing characters. And the new extreme/dark visual style is forced, over-the-top, and just plain silly. Shadow the Hedgehog is the WORST "Sonic" game ever made because it encompases everything that made the new games such a departure from the classic games.
While Sonic Advance was a classic Sonic game with the modern art style and more characters, Sonic Advance 2 came out of nowhere to steal the spotlight. The game focused on speed with its "Burst Mode" which allowed characters to go even faster. Throw in seemlessly grinding and the aerial tricks, the game truly took what was great about the classic games and modernized it.
As a hardcore Sonic fan, when I heard there would be a Sonic game for the DS, I got it so I could have a backlit screen for the GBA series and to play the Sonic game that would eventually come out. What a pleasant surprise it is to now say that Sonic Rush ended up being the best modern Sonic game made! The graphics (3D models with 2D sprites are perfect for a handheld) were great, the music (which brought back memories of Jet Grind Radio) was amazing, and the gameplay was classic Sonic.
Throw in Burst Mode, the Tension Gauge/Boost, grinding, aerial tricks, and the awe-inspiring stylus-controlled Special Stages, Sonic Rush is THE BEST SONIC GAME MADE SINCE SONIC CD!!!
...and for those of you who are complaining that its too hard...practice up, n00bs...
The best Sonic game in years.

While it is a tad on the short side, and still suffers from the same problems as many other sonic games (you need to memorize levels, cheap deaths, etc), this is the best sonic game since the days of the Genesis; and it's also the fastest Sonic game ever.
Basically, if you've ever loved a Sonic game, get this one; it ranks up there as one of the best.

If you really want to know what I think, I think that Sonic Rush is a good game. It is not that I spend all my time playing it or anything, it's just a good game to get to once in a while. However, when you do get to playing it, it will be a galloping good time.
That's right. I just said "galloping good time."
But enough about that for now. I have only really been a true, blue (no pun intended there) Sonic fan since the Dreamcast, what you would call the "Adventure, Shadow, Ark" type era. But I can honestly tell you that the 3D games where you shoot and do light dashes and all that stuff is what I like better. Sonic Rush is still a good game, though.
Now that you have read all my ranting (and I commend you on that), we can actually get on to the game. The first new thing you will notice, right from looking on the cover, is that there is a new hero in town. Her name is Blaze the Cat and she is co-starring with Sonic in this game. Now, I can admit, playing with Sonic is better then playing with her because we have gotten used to Sonic. However, Blaze will probably be a lasting character in the series. Next, you will notice that you will hardly use the stylus at all during the game. You pretty much just use Sonic and Blaze to run and end as many enemies as possible to boost your adrenaline meter, which is a new feature. your DS to make them go really fast. However, unless the adrenaline meter is full, you can only go so fast. Also, to keep the adrenaline meter full, you must defeat enemies and do tricks. You can press and hold your Y or A buttons This will make you temporarily invincible and able to simply brush by enemies. Cool, eh? After that, it is pretty much the things that Sonic fans of the Genesis will remember. About the special stages, they are pretty much like the ones in Sonic 2 for the Genesis except you can't jump over the mines, you use the stylus to move, there are little spring balloon things to help you get rings (just press the little numbers with your stylus in order) and Tails is not there to help you pick up any rings you miss. Also, the bosses are 3D, unlike the actual boards.
All and all, Sonic Rush is a good game. However, fans of the Sonic Adventure games with the full 3D levels and the Chaos Control and all that might want to lay off. However, if you are a die-hard Sonic fan or you really enjoyed the games for the Genesis, then you might feel the need to jump into the Rush.

Graphics:5 much like with the New Sup Mario Bros, Sonic has been given more detail while keeping the oldschool 2dness.
Control: 4 pretty much same controls as every other sonic with the exception of the new turbo button to make the game even faster.
Sound: 4 same sounds you've heard before that addicted you to the game, although it would've been nice to have some voice actors for sonic and eggman, the only had tails that spoke.
Game Length: 3 i beat the game in only a few hours and was kinda left wanting more levels but oh well i guess i'll have to wait for the next sonic game.
Difficulty: 3 would've been nice if there would've been like a harder difficulty setting, it was alot easier then i expected.
Overall: 4 1/2 despite a few things that are annoying about Sonic Rush, this game is a must for anyone looking for an oldschool adventure game with some polished up graphics.
So Wheres that gap again?

I bought sonic rush about a month and a half ago and still have yet to beat the 3rd level. Although im relativeley bad at using the ds, (though I find it fun) sonic rush's control scheme worked fine for me, the only problem I have discovered with it is the tenacious levels. This being a sonic game, and a 3d side scroller at that, you want to move fast, and since pressing X (I think) boosts you, I try to do that all the time, but oh no, theres another gap I overshot and half to try the level over again because of falling 200,000 feet. That gets frustrating to an extent, im not a true hardcore sonic fan, but seriously I'd rather have a totally fast paced action game than feeling like im driving in new york city.
Pros: Can be fun and exhilerating to watch the enviorments fly by as you zoom across the level
Not very difficult, its releativley easy, you start with many lives, no mind bending puzzles
The boss battles take a little getting used to and are a refreshing break from the side scrolling action
Cons: Stop, Go, Stop, Go, action, to much stopping to move a heavy stone block so you can pass, then rocketing forward for 10 seconds only to fly off a ledge
Side scrolling action, this can get boring fast...
Little to no touch screen involvement, yes there are sections where you use it to guide sonic, but this gets repetitive and boing after a few levels.

Recent sonic games have felt very broken in several aspects, but mainly because of their transition from 2D to 3D. In Sonic Rush, the hedgehog is back in 2D for his best game in a while.
Story: 7/10, its nothing special, but it never is, because Sonic doesn't need a great story to be Sonic. Nontheless, it is top-notch for a sonic game, and did exceed my expectations slightly. Both sonic and blaze, who is a good NPC in sonic's story, are going against Eggman for their own reasons. I won't spoil anything. =P
Graphics: 8/10, by DS standards, the graphics are great. Its a mix of 2D mainly, with a bit of 3D sprinkled in here and there. You can see Sonic as a blur when you're running quickly, a small touch that adds alot to the game. Backgrounds are pretty for the most part and Sonic is back in 2D!
Gameplay: 8/10, classic Sonic platforming is back and just about as good as ever. Almost everything about the gameplay is good, with the exception of a few minor flaws always in Sonic games and one major flaw, blind enemies and blind jumps. There are times when your going so fast you slam into an enemy or fall into a bottomless pit. This can be extremely annoying when trying to get an S-Rank on every mission. Still, the gameplay is much better than average.
Controls: 9/10, I don't notice the controls while I'm playing the game, so that's a good thing. One slightly unnatural thing when playing as Blaze is the R-Button hover skill. I get used to Sonic attacking with R, then I die when I move to Blaze. No major flaws, though.
Sound: 7/10, nothing special here, but good. A few of the tunes are catchy, but some are just average. Nothing much to say here.
Replay Value: 9/10, at first it might seem like there are too few unlockables to have 9/10 replay value. Your right, there are. Though it doesn't unlock anything, getting an S-Rank on every mission will give you enough replay value to last you a LONG time.
Overall: 8/10, or 4 stars. Sonic Rush is one of the best Sonic games to come along in a long time. Its also one of the best DS action games yet. Its gotten lowered to $19.99 at most major retailers, so go pick it up if you can. You won't regret it!
