One of the few games my son actually liked!

My son got at least 10 games from friends & relatives (and myself) for Christmas, and this is one of his favorites.

Lots of Modes to Choose From Does Not Insure a Game to be Good

Overall this game was good I thought, but for the players of Soul Calibur who are use to Soul Calibur 2 this game may seem a little bit foriegn to them for these reasons. The new costumes are all vivid and colorful then they usually are to the point where it is kind of weird, some of the moves have been upgraded or downgraded for some chracters which I find annoying sometimes, there are moves which have been switched around from Soul Calibur 2 for example in SC2 Taki's jumping move was triangle+square now in SC3 it is square+circle and this showas up in some chracters in the game where the buttons for a move was changed this reason made me mad the most, and the new modes are just akward especially Chronicles of the Sword mode I saw no point in it and Character Customization mode was dissapointing also you couldnt choose what moves they can have you cant choos what kind of build they are or how tall they are it pissed me off. It seemed like all the modes were some kind of big joke and I mean it except VS of course. This game is still fin though especially with friends if they can come over the changes made to there favorite characters and it is always pleasing to get all the items and weapons. Its fun.

Really fun for a while.

This game is extremely fun when you get really good with a couple characters. Best make sure you have a friend or 2 or 3 who will play against you because single-player is pretty repetitive. You'll keep playing to unlock more and more armor and weapons for the standard characters and the ones you can create (which is pretty fun. I spent more time creating characters than actually playing the game I think.) You'll play and play and play and then suddenly you'll lose interest. My 4 star rating can go up or down one depending on how able you are to find people to play against. Personally, I had only 2 other people I could play that wouldn't quit (they own the game as well, thus they don't suck at it). I learned annoying ways to dominate with 3 or 4 of the characters, so most people just give up after I stomp them 5 times in a row. But if you have siblings or someone that will play as much as you, you can probably get a lot of play out of this game.

this game rocks

IT's an interesting game. I love it.
The only problem is that I'm quite busy and I don't have time to play it everyday.

Excellent game!

As many people say, easy to learn, hard to master.
The load time is long, but tolerable.
I'd prefer a bigger button to skip screens; the start button isn't comfortable for me.
The chronicle mode is nice, but more of the time you are waiting something instead of playing, waiting for it to load, waiting for your warriors to arrive, waiting for your warriors to enter the enemy fortress...
I'd wish to earn more gold in the soul arena...but I understand that can't get rich by playing quickies.
Aside from those, I had the best time fighting. So many fighters, new and classic.
The creation of custom fighters is one of the best features, so many weapons and disciplines; I'd wish it could allow to store more custom fighters.
I hope that SC4 will allow us to create custom fighters with different physiques and attributes, then you could have fat and giant ogres, lightning-fast-stabbing pygmies, dangerous buxom girls, spoiled bratty killers, hunchbacked hellish zombies, pale and skinny painted-face undead avengers,...
The story mode is very good; my only complain is about the cheap attacks of the final boss, abyss.
The graphics, music and sounds are excellent.
Without this game, I'd be playing warcraft on my pc.

Excellent fighting game for beginners and experienced players alike

While the fighting system is deep enough to provide an entertaining challenge to hardcore fighting game fans, it is also easy for beginners and even younger children to pick up the basics well enough to enjoy the game after a little practice.

We babysit my 9 year old niece and 5 year old nephew frequently, and often end up playing PS2. We played Soul Calibur 3 for a while tonight, and they both got the hang of the game quite quickly. In two-player versus mode, the players are given the option of adjusting the amount of life their fighter begins each match with, so players can adjust the amounts relative to each other to even the odds a bit. Of course, you can just let the kids win most of the matches to keep it fun for them and save your best moves to use on your friends.

Although the ESRB rating is T for Teen, I don't believe a reasonable adult would find any of the content inappropriate for younger children. Some of the female characters were obviously designed to appeal to young males, but there is nothing in the game they couldn't show on prime time network television. The fights do not contain any blood or gore, and there is no foul language, unless you count the antiquated "cur". If you have a child or teen that enjoys fighting games, this one is a must have, and more appropriate than many of the other fighting games on the market IMO.

It was good while it lasted.

When I got home I poped in this game and I played and played and played, and I had fun. This Is a good game the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is very solid. But sadly it only lasted for about 5 days, then when I wanted to show this game to my friends it had an error with loading. Overall this game is Great but did not last very long.

Extraordinary

This game definately lives up to its hype. In addition to having the words "cur" and "absurd" permanently added to your vocabulary, this game will provide you with a good month or so of non-stop entertainment. To call this game a "game" is really a misnomer - Soul Calibur III is really a collection of several games - there's a Story Mode, a Tournament Mode, a Strategy Mode ("control an army" battlefield-type stuff), a Character Creation mode, three VS modes (which now has the option of letting you turn on things like earthquakes and slipperyness), an interactive Tutorial Mode, and more and more and more...

If you have a sophisticated setup, this game will use much of it's potential. Of course, the game supports Progressive Mode (EDTV) and widescreen, but it also supports Dolby Digital EX (which uses 7.1 channels - this is usually only found on major blockbuster DVDs) as well as THX.

As great as this game is, it does have a couple of drawbacks. First, the lack of any online modes. Secondly, a (now infamous) "memory card bug". I can verify that the reports around the web about this bug are true - it's happened to me once. It seems to be caused by Chronicles of the Sword mode. At any rate, my advice is to FREQUENTLY BACKUP YOUR MEMORY CARD to another memory card (you should be doing this anyways). That way, if one gets corrupted, you can use the data from the backup one.

These two drawbacks pull the game from 5 stars to 4 stars for me, but this game is still definately one of the best games of the year, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
