Tales of Destiny is undoubtedly the most boring RPG in the history of video games. I started playing with a much higher expectation, and ended disappointed. In addition, I finished the game curious of the ending, only to discover another disappointment.

I spent at least 40 hours playing this game, and vamoosed from approximately 200 battles, as a result of boredom. Even with a strategy guide, I was left in the dark several times. One may walk around aimlessly for hours without a strategy guide at hand. Overall, this game is not recommended by me, but then again everybody has a different opinion.

A huge disappointment

I'm a Tales fan. I love most of the games in the series, though the series does have flaws. Tales of Legendia, Tales of the Tempest, just to name a few, though another one is this game: Tales of Destiny.

To start, the graphics look like they came from a SNES game, a poor-graphic SNES game at that. Apart from the opening and ending anime-movies, everything looks bad, there only being the occasional spell animation that isn't generic. Towns are unimaginitive and the sprites are rather blocky. Then there is the world map, which looks positivly hideous, along with the aweful angle it's at.

Next, the music and sound. The saving grace of the game is brought down by a lack of songs that don't sound like each other or aren't overplayed. The voices are still in Japanese, which is good and bad. Sometimes I want to understand what's said at the end of battle, though it's not that big of a problem taken the only voice acting is in the battles and can be turned off.

The characters also are rather poor. They all seem the same for the begining of the game, though there are some changes through the rest. It doesn't matter much, since all of their personalities have been done before.

Now the combat. What always is a big thing in the series is bogged down by the fact that you can only do one attack at a time. No standard attack combos, you use the attack once. This really slows down the battles.

The plot is also dry. Not much of a story, and it doesn't keep you hooked due to how overly predictable it is.

So what is good about the game? Well, not much. Some of it is good, but for the most part, it's a poor game and a disgrace to the series.

Too long and not worth the time to play

This is not one of the best games to play. It's very long and seems to continue on and on without really a satisfying ending for the time. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Good game!

I liked this game. The battles sometimes ran a little long, but that's true in most RPGs. I also liked the sidequests

Interesting way to play

I've played too many games to even remember most of em' and I decided to buy Tales of Destiny due to an urge to have a new RPG. I wasn't sure of what to expect, I thought it'd probably be some lame no name chance out of nowhere like Tecmo's Secret of the Stars. But then I played it, now this game hit me pretty hard considdering what my idea of it was. I couldn't stop playing, I played this unique battle system and the storyline until I couldn't stay awake. I played this game for two and a half days streight. I didn't even do this for Final Fantasy 7 or Suikoden, this is a game that you wanna play more and more of. very powerful plot indeed but the graphics were certainly weak, I mean they were pretty bad(not as bad a Lunar Silver Star Story Complete's but still pretty weak.) However the music was the best part about the game I think that it beat out any other game's music. Most games have their strongpoints and that's it. Xenogears has the best plot I've ever seen. Suikoden has the best battle system I ever seen. Final Fantasy 8 has the best graphics I've ever seen. But Tales of Destiny have them all balanced out(cept the graphics). I'd reccomend this game to anybody accept the people who only play a game for it's graphics. ~Seth~

Tales game series are always awesome... this included!

Funny to think that before I even got to play this, I've already played FFVII, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire 3, and other RPGS circa 1997-98 and yet this game, I have to say, is my favorite among them all. A friend of mine had a copy and said it sucks but when I tried it, I was completely mesmerized over how awesome this game is, especially THE battles. I've tried all sorts of RPGS in the past but even up to now, I still consider the battles in Namco's "Tales" series to be the most action-packed and fun... the BEST for me to sum it up fully. ToD may have a slightly high encounter rate (which can be lessened by using a certain item) but what about it if the battles are exciting?

Graphics? If you like SNES-esque 2D graphics at its best, ToD is simply a keeper. If not, you might be initially turned off by this game. Then again, if graphics matter most to you then you might be more interested in a prettier, but shallow and uninspired games that only take a few or so hours to finish. It's no question that the developers who worked on this game emphasized more on what is skin deep. Bad strategy to lure the 3Dphiles at the time (who were astonished by abything 3D) but for RPG old-schoolers of the SNES era, most of them would see how good this game can be. And the anime intro of this game is really cool.

The BGM music is a-ok... not as memorable as that offered by, lets say, final fantasy or wild arms, but it's still pretty nice since it matches the game well enough. There are a few fast tunes that would stay in your head (well, for me anyway). As for the voices, they retained the japanese voices instead of handing it to amateurish dubbers of that era... GOOD MOVE! The japanese voices are awesome (although it may annoy some who doesn't have trained ears for words that don't sound english), with some famous seiyuu voicing out the character's battle voices. A definite treat for anime fans!

The story may turn on some, turn off others, but overall, the characters are the driving plot of this game and once you get a liking of any of the characters here, you would enjoy the story immensely. I have to say the dialogue is pretty well-scripted, as well as translated impeccably (that's a positive word, folks), with a few funny and witty dialogue and in-jokes. This converts a seemingly tried-and-true RPG elements into something very light and enjoyable feel on a slightly cliched but well-written story.

This is the game that started me on the tales series, and what a series it is! And I find it ironic that certain game sites rated this game low whereas the people who actually played this game thouroughly see the game in high regards.

By the way, I've played all sorts of great games before in my friend's place before, and when I finally bought my own playstation, ths is the first game I bought (after trying it out in a friend's place). Even though I have the money to do so, I haven't bought another game for months. I just plain love this game!

Interesting new fighting/rpg battle style

I think this game is overall great. You might be disapointed in the sucky graphics, though(much like SNES). It has an interesting storyline, however certain parts are a little soap-operaish(i.e. so-and-so turns out to be so-and-so's sister). The fighting style is refreshing from the typical selection of spell, attack... where you don't actually fight you just give commands. That can be fun, but Tales of Destiny has some of that and it adds in a new semi-fighting style to it giving it a unique blend. ---all in all it's a great game--- ---it's worth your money---

A Fun Game in a Great Series

Tales of Destiny, originally released in 1997, is one of the more popular titles in the series (at least in Japan, here in America it's hardly been played). The game is really nothing original in terms of its storyline, and even in '97 it looked a little outdated, but it was still a fairly fun game to play. If, however, you started with later Tales games (say Symphonia on the Gamecube or Abyss for the PS2) then it may take a while to settle into this one, seeing as how the series has evolved quite a bit since this game was first released.

There's really nothing amazing about the story in Tales of Destiny. Stahn is a stowaway on a ship, and when he's found the guards think he's after "it." "It" just happens to be the Swordian Dymlos, a talking sword. Suddenly the ship is attacked by monsters. Stahn has to somehow defend himself, and the only way to do it is by using Dymlos. Eventually he escapes the ship and finds himself in need of help. Eventually this stuff will lead him on an epic journey to save the world.

Tales of Destiny certainly isn't the strongest outing in the series. For one, like many Tales games, the storyline is full of cliches. Most Tales fans don't really mind this, as to make up for all the cliches, you've got tons of unforseen plot twists that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. This isn't true of Tales of Destiny. There aren't a whole lot of memorable moments, and the story moves a little slower than you'd like it to. At least the game has some pretty well developed characters. The localization of the game, itself, however could've used a lot more attention. Like a lot of RPGs to be released in the late 90's, some of the translation is just downright terrible, and the script really suffers for it. In Tales of Destiny the writing is absolutely atrocious. Again, however, it's mostly do to how the game was localized (somewhat how Final Fantasy VII suffered).

Putting another bad thing out of the way, Tales of Destiny looks like a late generation Super Nintendo game. A lot of the enemies you see roaming around (when you're in one of those situations, the game switches between random battles and contact based a bit) look pixilated, and the sprites aren't really all that detailed. However, to the game's credit, while it may not look like a Playstation game, it actually still looks very beautiful on an artistic scale. The environments are given some pretty neat looking detail, and everything runs perfectly smooth. So while the graphics aren't up to the standards of the Playstation, it's still a really good looking game. It just looks as though it were in development for the Super Nintendo first.

The Tales series is widely known for its fast-paced combat system. The games are also pretty well known for being difficult to those unfamiliar with it. Tales of Destiny fulfills both of those. The combat is fast paced. You can only move forward and backward, and you can execute melee attacks as well as cast spells and use techniques you'll learn throughout the game. What makes combat so much fun is that it isn't menu based at all. This isn't an RPG where all your characters line up on side while the enemies line up on the other and you select commands. Tales of Destiny you must actually walk (or run) up to an enemy and hit the X button to initiate an attack. In battle it feels a little like an action/adventure game sometimes, but it keeps you on your toes and keeps you paying attention.

Characters also join you in your travels. When in combat they are controlled by AI, and it's really not that bad. The game also lets you set up a strategy for those helping you. While a lot of games tend to have AI that's not so great, Tales of Destiny manages to be pretty good. The game hardly ever puts you into a festival of reviving characters left and right, but that doesn't mean it isn't difficult. For those unfamiliar with the battle system (or who did begin with later installments) it can take some getting used to. Especially if you find yourself overwhelmed. Enemies aren't so dumb either They like to go after the character posing a threat, and often will screw up your attempts at casting spells. At least combat is easy to pick up on, and even those new to the series will find themselves picking up on it fast.

When you're not battling you'll of course be roaming through dungeons and going to towns to develop your characters. Tales of Destiny is a pretty slow moving game, though. The story doesn't pick up for quite some time. But Tales of Destiny also isn't all that long, either. It will probably take you less than 30 hours to conquer the main story alone. Most of the game consists of random encounters, but there are moments when the game throws in some contact based battles. It's a good thing battling is fun, because the random encounter rate can get on your nerves at times.

Tales of Destiny may look like a late generation Super Nintendo game, but it certainly sounds like a Playstation game. The music here is really good, particularly the battle themes. For the most part you'll enjoy it. Not every track is a classic, but it's nice to know there are some memorable tunes to be found within the game.

If story is your thing, Tales of Destiny will drive you nuts. It doesn't have anything worth remembering, but it does have some good characters, at least. If however, you really love gameplay, Tales of Destiny is the perfect RPG for you. It's combat alone warrants the game a try for any RPG fanatic. Just don't expect a real memorable storyline in the process.

On the Positive Side

+Good character development
+Good music
+It may look like a late generation SNES title, but it really is a beautiful looking game
+Combat is a lot of fun

On the Negative Side

-The storyline just isn't good
-Doesn't have the best graphics. Beautiful game, but by 1997 there were already tons of other PSX games that could blow this out of the water
-Horrible localization

Really fun gameplay with great battle system and storyline

Has a unique storyline and one of the most unique battle systems I have ever played, and I have played several RPGs. This is certainly one of the best.
