"Philia Bomb!"

When I first rented this game, I wasn't expecting a lot out of it. But it instantly caught my attention when I realized, "Hey! That's a Japanese voice!" Yes, Tales of Destiny keeps its Japanese voices which is very, very cool because a lot of famous seiyuus (voice actors) are in it including Imai Yuka and..er..the dude who plays Zelgadis in The Slayers... >_< Plus many more! ^_^ But don't think you won't understand anything, the only time you hear their voices are in battle and the hilarious scenes when Stahn is exploring bookcases. =D And if you beat the game, you can listen to hundreds of drama clips, attacks, and victory voices!

Tales of Destiny has many battle in it which would usually be very annoying and frustrating (*cough*ThousandArms*cough*) but Namco created a battle system where you can run across the screen as an adorable chibi and slash your enemies with your weapons, specials and spells! Plus you can control the other characters' attacks/specials too!

The overall story is pretty cliche but it doesn't take a moment of fun away from the game! There's some surprising twists at the end and after the credits you are treated to a hilarious reunion. ^_^

This game is tons of fun and worth the bucks! Hell, I had to buy this game 3 times already because my disks keep getting broken/scratched! ...That's telling you something.

Well, maybe they can. Gosh darn, this game is so awesome. For one, the main theme of the story has to do with several people who all posess talking swords who have been alive for several thousand years. The best part about this is that the swords have hilarious conversations in which they fight amongst one another and their human owners. Another cool feature is that you can find rings called Channeling Rings that, when equipped on a character, can allow a person on controller 2 to control that character during battle, and you can find 3 of them, making this game a 4 player game. Very cool. The fighting style is also addicting, and you can play for several hours straight without getting bored, and with the 4 player setup, you can compete amongst one another to see who can kill the most monsters. Buy this game no matter what you do!

THIS GAME RULES!

...This game is great! People are always complaining about the graphics...Who cares about the graphics. The people who say the plot is bad and the characters (who are like some of the greatest characters ever i admit characters are something i look for in a game AND THESE ARE GREAT!...Anyway if you are debating on getting this game, give it a try. The way i see, you either hate or you love it and most love it. I played this game halfway through before my brother lost it and ever since then ive wanted to play it again ans now a few years later i finally got it again! And still love it.

This game ROCKS! Even the graphics and story rocks! And the game
is 2 player compatible(4 players possible with multiplayer adapter).

The best part of the game is the battle system, even though its like Tales of Phantasia's(Another Japanese Rpg made by namco) battle system its still fun to play. Expecially the
4 player battle system rocks. There are tons of attacks and spells
to choose from and the battle is real time sidescrolled, like you
can slice, jab, uppercut with you controlling the character and moving around. There are a lot of weapons and armor to choose from.

And if you are talking about the graphics, the might be 2D, but there still enjoyable enough...

Now I wont spoil the story/plot but I'll give you a 10/10 rating for the game...

This game is by far my favorite game!! The battle system pwns!! Rather than just standing there waiting for your meter to fill up like it FF games you run back and forth hitting the buttons to attack, cast spells, gaurd, or open the menu!! PLUS it's 2 player! 4 player if you own a PS1 multi-tap!! The graphics aren't great... But I don't mind graphics as long as the game has good gameplay value. For all I care the people could be stick-men!! I also liked the BGM. And the story had me playing for hours just to know what happens next!! When I beat the game I said "WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE OVER?!?!?!?!?" So if you have the same taste in games as me you'll love it!

One of my favorite games all time.

A Fun Game in a Great Series

Tales of Destiny, originally released in 1997, is one of the more popular titles in the series (at least in Japan, here in America it's hardly been played). The game is really nothing original in terms of its storyline, and even in '97 it looked a little outdated, but it was still a fairly fun game to play. If, however, you started with later Tales games (say Symphonia on the Gamecube or Abyss for the PS2) then it may take a while to settle into this one, seeing as how the series has evolved quite a bit since this game was first released.

There's really nothing amazing about the story in Tales of Destiny. Stahn is a stowaway on a ship, and when he's found the guards think he's after "it." "It" just happens to be the Swordian Dymlos, a talking sword. Suddenly the ship is attacked by monsters. Stahn has to somehow defend himself, and the only way to do it is by using Dymlos. Eventually he escapes the ship and finds himself in need of help. Eventually this stuff will lead him on an epic journey to save the world.

Tales of Destiny certainly isn't the strongest outing in the series. For one, like many Tales games, the storyline is full of cliches. Most Tales fans don't really mind this, as to make up for all the cliches, you've got tons of unforseen plot twists that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. This isn't true of Tales of Destiny. There aren't a whole lot of memorable moments, and the story moves a little slower than you'd like it to. At least the game has some pretty well developed characters. The localization of the game, itself, however could've used a lot more attention. Like a lot of RPGs to be released in the late 90's, some of the translation is just downright terrible, and the script really suffers for it. In Tales of Destiny the writing is absolutely atrocious. Again, however, it's mostly do to how the game was localized (somewhat how Final Fantasy VII suffered).

Putting another bad thing out of the way, Tales of Destiny looks like a late generation Super Nintendo game. A lot of the enemies you see roaming around (when you're in one of those situations, the game switches between random battles and contact based a bit) look pixilated, and the sprites aren't really all that detailed. However, to the game's credit, while it may not look like a Playstation game, it actually still looks very beautiful on an artistic scale. The environments are given some pretty neat looking detail, and everything runs perfectly smooth. So while the graphics aren't up to the standards of the Playstation, it's still a really good looking game. It just looks as though it were in development for the Super Nintendo first.

The Tales series is widely known for its fast-paced combat system. The games are also pretty well known for being difficult to those unfamiliar with it. Tales of Destiny fulfills both of those. The combat is fast paced. You can only move forward and backward, and you can execute melee attacks as well as cast spells and use techniques you'll learn throughout the game. What makes combat so much fun is that it isn't menu based at all. This isn't an RPG where all your characters line up on side while the enemies line up on the other and you select commands. Tales of Destiny you must actually walk (or run) up to an enemy and hit the X button to initiate an attack. In battle it feels a little like an action/adventure game sometimes, but it keeps you on your toes and keeps you paying attention.

Characters also join you in your travels. When in combat they are controlled by AI, and it's really not that bad. The game also lets you set up a strategy for those helping you. While a lot of games tend to have AI that's not so great, Tales of Destiny manages to be pretty good. The game hardly ever puts you into a festival of reviving characters left and right, but that doesn't mean it isn't difficult. For those unfamiliar with the battle system (or who did begin with later installments) it can take some getting used to. Especially if you find yourself overwhelmed. Enemies aren't so dumb either They like to go after the character posing a threat, and often will screw up your attempts at casting spells. At least combat is easy to pick up on, and even those new to the series will find themselves picking up on it fast.

When you're not battling you'll of course be roaming through dungeons and going to towns to develop your characters. Tales of Destiny is a pretty slow moving game, though. The story doesn't pick up for quite some time. But Tales of Destiny also isn't all that long, either. It will probably take you less than 30 hours to conquer the main story alone. Most of the game consists of random encounters, but there are moments when the game throws in some contact based battles. It's a good thing battling is fun, because the random encounter rate can get on your nerves at times.

Tales of Destiny may look like a late generation Super Nintendo game, but it certainly sounds like a Playstation game. The music here is really good, particularly the battle themes. For the most part you'll enjoy it. Not every track is a classic, but it's nice to know there are some memorable tunes to be found within the game.

If story is your thing, Tales of Destiny will drive you nuts. It doesn't have anything worth remembering, but it does have some good characters, at least. If however, you really love gameplay, Tales of Destiny is the perfect RPG for you. It's combat alone warrants the game a try for any RPG fanatic. Just don't expect a real memorable storyline in the process.

On the Positive Side

+Good character development
+Good music
+It may look like a late generation SNES title, but it really is a beautiful looking game
+Combat is a lot of fun

On the Negative Side

-The storyline just isn't good
-Doesn't have the best graphics. Beautiful game, but by 1997 there were already tons of other PSX games that could blow this out of the water
-Horrible localization
