Interesting way to play

I've played too many games to even remember most of em' and I decided to buy Tales of Destiny due to an urge to have a new RPG. I wasn't sure of what to expect, I thought it'd probably be some lame no name chance out of nowhere like Tecmo's Secret of the Stars. But then I played it, now this game hit me pretty hard considdering what my idea of it was. I couldn't stop playing, I played this unique battle system and the storyline until I couldn't stay awake. I played this game for two and a half days streight. I didn't even do this for Final Fantasy 7 or Suikoden, this is a game that you wanna play more and more of. very powerful plot indeed but the graphics were certainly weak, I mean they were pretty bad(not as bad a Lunar Silver Star Story Complete's but still pretty weak.) However the music was the best part about the game I think that it beat out any other game's music. Most games have their strongpoints and that's it. Xenogears has the best plot I've ever seen. Suikoden has the best battle system I ever seen. Final Fantasy 8 has the best graphics I've ever seen. But Tales of Destiny have them all balanced out(cept the graphics). I'd reccomend this game to anybody accept the people who only play a game for it's graphics. ~Seth~

I really would like to know why this game isen't famous. I didn't know anything about the game and didn't hear about it before or nothing. I love RPGs so I went to my rental store and looked at a bunch of games. I found this one and picked it up and looked at it. I said "Nah...I will just get Medal of Honor instead." Man is Medal of Honor a great game but then I rented this and loved it. The first reason I like it is because of the battles. You can actually walk up to them and swing your sword at them by pressing buttons and you get learn new skills to do really big moves (I guess you could call them limit breaks but you can use them as much as you want anytime you want until you run out of your points for magic). And you can have all of your characters fight at the same time so you and 3 other people can be pounding on one enemy. You can pick different stratagies on the battle menu. Like you can pick no spells so the computer people that are in your party won't use any spells. Which that is another reason why I like the game. You just control one person in the battle. 3 other people help you out using spells on there own and sometimes when the other people in your party gets really mad they will constantly use spells and let all of there energy out. I really didn't know what the guy was talking about on the review under the title of the game. He was talking like this was the worst ever. Everything he was saying about I disaggreed with. Another thing I like about the game is how the people treat you. They treat you like real life but maybe a little ruff. Don't worry I won't spoil anything. You can walking around town doing nothing and then you can help this girl out and she and another person will say "So......let's sit down somewhere to talk." And then you go in this place with a bunch of drunk people in it which is very humorous. You all talk and decide to go on journey. So then they rent you a place at the inn which is right next door. You go in there and fall asleep. The next morning you see yourself in bed still asleep and you see a bunch of ZZZZZZs about your head which makes you laugh at how cool the game is. Then you see the two girls come in and they talk together telling each other to wake you up. Then one of them walks up to you and kicks you in the face and yells wake up. After you wake up you go "HUH...HUH! Oh....Good Morn(yyyahhhhhnnnn)ing." And then one of the girls go "Your such a zombie." It's just a really really fun game. You go out in snow storms and dungeons and a bunch of places that you can just check out for the fun of it. I really don't why people say this game has such bad graphics. I just finished beating FFVIII and played this game and didn't think the graphics were bad at all. In fact I like the graphics on this game way better because they let you laugh sometimes when you see how they walk. You see your legs walk really fast just like on Charlie Brown. That's basically why I like the game soooooo much because of the fun graphics and the fun gameplay. If you want a fun game that will make you laugh play this. If you want a good game that will make you have different feelings play FFVII. BUY THE GAME! MAKE IT POPULAR!

An Ultimate Game For An Ultimate Era...

Namco's Tales of Destiny was by far the greatest RPG I've ever played in my entire life. (13 years) When I first rented the game with my friend, I had supreme doubts, and I thought it looked terrible. But after renting it myself, I got hooked. I guess the battle system and the weaponry and characters got me. We continued renting it, and my friend and I both played it using the item that allows you to in the game. The graphics are ok, almost like SNES. If you like Final Fantasy Anthology, this is the game for you...

Old School game with lots of appeal

I'm an old school RPG person. Which means, I grew up on Dragon Warrior on the NES (and to a lesser extent, SSI's older stuff on the PC). Which also means, I'm *very* partial to 2D graphics. Other reviews here rag on the graphics in this game, but I wonder, has anyone even looked at them? Each background is painstakingly handcrafted, the characters the same. This game is absolutely beautiful, and it doesn't need fancy 3D to do it. I have yet to see a 3D based game with as much character as this masterpiece.

That being said, the story is superb, if not rehashed standard fantasy fare. The combat system is innovative and a breath of fresh air. Add to the fact that this game is completely "customizable" in just how deep you want your RPG. There are tons of mini-quests and even a tough, secret Tower of Druaga clone that you don't *have* to complete to beat the game, although it's very rewarding if you do.

If you think 3D is the end-all be all and let that be your reason for not buying this game, shame on you! A great game, a great story, beautifully done.

It changed the way I look at RPG's

I picked this game up on blind chance. It looked interesting enough and so I bought it. I am happy to say that this is one maybe even the best role playing game I have ever played! The story is funny and great. The music is awesome. The battle system is refreshing and original. It changed the way I look at RPG's. Turn-based battle is ...boring after playing a game such as this. The mini-games are another reason why this game surpasses all other rpg's. Though the Tower of Druaga is tough, it's worth it when you are able to get some of the best items in the game. I have played it twice through and am still not bored. All in all this game just plain ROCKS.

Tales game series are always awesome... this included!

Funny to think that before I even got to play this, I've already played FFVII, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire 3, and other RPGS circa 1997-98 and yet this game, I have to say, is my favorite among them all. A friend of mine had a copy and said it sucks but when I tried it, I was completely mesmerized over how awesome this game is, especially THE battles. I've tried all sorts of RPGS in the past but even up to now, I still consider the battles in Namco's "Tales" series to be the most action-packed and fun... the BEST for me to sum it up fully. ToD may have a slightly high encounter rate (which can be lessened by using a certain item) but what about it if the battles are exciting?

Graphics? If you like SNES-esque 2D graphics at its best, ToD is simply a keeper. If not, you might be initially turned off by this game. Then again, if graphics matter most to you then you might be more interested in a prettier, but shallow and uninspired games that only take a few or so hours to finish. It's no question that the developers who worked on this game emphasized more on what is skin deep. Bad strategy to lure the 3Dphiles at the time (who were astonished by abything 3D) but for RPG old-schoolers of the SNES era, most of them would see how good this game can be. And the anime intro of this game is really cool.

The BGM music is a-ok... not as memorable as that offered by, lets say, final fantasy or wild arms, but it's still pretty nice since it matches the game well enough. There are a few fast tunes that would stay in your head (well, for me anyway). As for the voices, they retained the japanese voices instead of handing it to amateurish dubbers of that era... GOOD MOVE! The japanese voices are awesome (although it may annoy some who doesn't have trained ears for words that don't sound english), with some famous seiyuu voicing out the character's battle voices. A definite treat for anime fans!

The story may turn on some, turn off others, but overall, the characters are the driving plot of this game and once you get a liking of any of the characters here, you would enjoy the story immensely. I have to say the dialogue is pretty well-scripted, as well as translated impeccably (that's a positive word, folks), with a few funny and witty dialogue and in-jokes. This converts a seemingly tried-and-true RPG elements into something very light and enjoyable feel on a slightly cliched but well-written story.

This is the game that started me on the tales series, and what a series it is! And I find it ironic that certain game sites rated this game low whereas the people who actually played this game thouroughly see the game in high regards.

By the way, I've played all sorts of great games before in my friend's place before, and when I finally bought my own playstation, ths is the first game I bought (after trying it out in a friend's place). Even though I have the money to do so, I haven't bought another game for months. I just plain love this game!

This game is great. It has a great balance between Story, Puzzles, and Combat. The fighting itself is very fun and doesn't get old. The graphics are two-dimensional, but also good. It also has lots of great mini games. Maybe there are too many random battes, but they're pretty fun. A must buy for RPGers.

Definatly worth it...

I bought this game on the recomendation of a friend. The graphics are not the best but the music, character develoment, and game play are great. This is NOT an easy, finish it in one sitting, kind of game. There are places in the game that you actually have to THINK (a novel idea when it comes to games). There's plenty here to keep a RPGers interest long enough to finish it. Look past the graphics to the heart of things... great gameplay. (Okay, not ALL the graphics are bad, the opening sequence is beautiful!)

I found this game last Christmas, while returning a game that I got a double of, I saw this, I had never heard of it, but it sounded good, so I got it. I was hooked as soon as I put this game in. The story line is great, I have to admit though the graphics are kinda bad, but I can live with that.

I honestly can say that I can't find any flaw in ToD. The story is the greatest surpassing even the likes of FF7. The battle system is the best I have ever seen in a RPG, I mean why should you have to wait around while your time bar fills up, and why can't you doge attacks by moving in other games.The Charates are one of my favorite parts of ToD, the main charater Stan isn't a galent hero but more of a simple county boy, Rutee is the sly theif with a hidden agenda, Mary is the Ditze warrior with no memorie of her past life, pluse there are also 5 sentent Swords in this game called sorwdeians each with there own personalites and masters.All of this pales in comparison to the games ending where the screen fades away and says... opps not supposed to say play to find out for yourself
