Really fun gameplay with great battle system and storyline

Has a unique storyline and one of the most unique battle systems I have ever played, and I have played several RPGs. This is certainly one of the best.

Very nice

This was the first non-Square RPG I really got into, and I've loved every minute of it. This game has several things that I personally enjoyed the most:
1) It's a cartoon- I've always preferred cartoony, anime-style characters to realistic characters. The appearance of the people lightens some of the darker parts of the story.
2) Very innovative- The battle system is a mixture of good old fashioned spell menus and item lists and fast-paced roughhousing with button combinations; it's like mixing "Final Fantasy" with "Street Fighter."
3) Awesome story- The story isn't anywhere near as developed as something like "Final Fantasy Tactics," but it's solid and ensnaring. I was on the edge of my proverbial seat the entire time.
4) Voices- This game hasn't been butchered by lousy English voice actors, and everyone's sound bites are still in their original Japanese. For some reason, game voices sound cooler when you don't know what they're saying.

So, if you're looking for a great game, this is definitely for you. I extremely recommend this one.

An aswome RPG

This game ROCKS! Even the graphics and story rocks! And the game
is 2 player compatible(4 players possible with multiplayer adapter).

The best part of the game is the battle system, even though its like Tales of Phantasia's(Another Japanese Rpg made by namco) battle system its still fun to play. Expecially the
4 player battle system rocks. There are tons of attacks and spells
to choose from and the battle is real time sidescrolled, like you
can slice, jab, uppercut with you controlling the character and moving around. There are a lot of weapons and armor to choose from.

...P>Now I wont spoil the story/plot but I'll give you a 10/10 rating for the game.

Thanx for reading I'm Raed.N.Enany.

^-^

Sure, the graphics can be corny, but hey the game itself is awesome. You don't have much choice on characters, having to have 4 perminant(4 sword characters) and 2 extra(non-sword characters). Am I spoiling? Maybe not.

Stahn is cool, Rutee is probably one of my favorite game characters of all time, Leon's pretty cool, though he...uh nevermind. Chelsea was my optional character, and she became very powerful ..., and she didn't even have one of the talking swords! Not only that, by the time you can get her as a perminant member, her level is so ... low, it'd take hours to level her up to the others. (level 2 when I got her).

The character selection is a downfall. The graphics are corny but cute. [Bad vibes] to the translators who removed the voices and removed the song! Yeah, for Namco in bringing us a wonderful game with cool characters. The battle system...is wierd; a near reproduction of Tales of Phantasia (ToD's predicessor).

Some of the puzzels are difficult, but are solveable.

Basically, though it's graphics resemble the SNES Tales of Phantasia, the game is still good. Graphics, to me, don't make the game--its the story.

Good game!

I liked this game. The battles sometimes ran a little long, but that's true in most RPGs. I also liked the sidequests

WOW!

I love this game! After renting this game for 2 weeks straight, I finally bought it. This game has a good storyline and characters, but the battles and music are bad.(in my opinion)I didn't like how the game is 2-D. It looks too much like a SNES game. Overall it rocks!

Ok, I know this review is coming really late considering the game has been out so long, but when I read the other reviews.... First of all, the graphics. THEY ROCK. They are 2d, yes, and the people are small (chibi style is what they call it). But the small people rock. They look like cartoons. When battling every character looks different, you can equip different weapons besides the swordians, and each weapon looks different. What really bugs me is that some people say the graphics [are bad], yes mabye the terrains do, and mabye the outside world does, but the battles. Hundreds of animations for each character can describe it. There are so many different moves and spells for each character(well so many different spells for characters with swordians, ill explain that later). It is amazing that they have about 50 very different looking spells per character with a swordian, and about 20 different special techniques per character(which is alot once you play through the game). I have beaten the game, and yes, the terrains for the outside world may [be bad]. But each town looks different. Each dungeon is there for a reason, and not there to get a special bonus item. Trust me, the graphics for battles are awesome, and probably the best 2d graphics out there.

As for plot and characters... The characters are all good, with unique personalitys. The hero really acts like a hero, and everyone else acts like they should. There is plenty of dialogue, and mystery behind everyone. Sometimes, like 3 times, ive gotten bored of reading and skipped all the text, but otherwise it isn't too bad. The plot is basically randomated at first. I didn't have a clue. You like need to go to some town or something. But there is this whole backstory about the these wars, involving swordians and monsters and stuff. Its complicated, and I haven't played the game for a while. But once you beat it, the entire purpose and outcome of the Aether wars become clear. So anyways you gotta save the world, or some nonsence, the storys good though. I mean you do stuff for a reason, then theres a plot twist. Seriously, its like a spontaneous story, so it isn't too boring. As for characters.... I read one review saying there was only 6 characters, but that person hasn't even beaten the game. There are 9, if I remember correctly. A couple leave, then come back, then may seem lost, but you find them later. 2 of them you gotta get on your own, and won't be hard to find. One of them was said to be left out of the American version by some, but you can get her. But yes, there are 9 different characters that you can obtain. If you think I am lying, beat the game. Actually, read the manual or a strategy, you will see.

Battling, I have sort of hit a little. Many different animations in battle, tons of spells, techniques, and so forth.
There is strategy to it though. You can move back and forth, Slash, stab, chop, and swing upwards. This makes it fun, and not the same old, hit x, select a command, hit x, select a command, hit x... but "Ok, if I run up and do a stab I can hit the guys behind the bird too, then I can have Rutee do her Bloody Rose on the guy under me while I am in mid air, so once I hit a guy up into the air Rutee will continue the attack and destroy him." There are tons of things you can do to have fun. Sometimes trying to see how many chain special attacks you can pull off. Or mabye, you want to test out all the tons of magic spells you have. It is fun to mess around, and fun to use some strategy, rather than do the normal final fantasy select and click battle. As for magic, there are 6 swordians. You get quite a few. Like the hero gets Dymlos, Rutee gets Atwight, and so on(can't spoil it!). With these Swordians you can develop magic. But only if you have it equpied. I mean you will always learn new magic, but if you don't have the swordian equipped you can't cast any. Still, some characters dont get a swordian and rock. Like at the end of the game only 2 of my characters including the hero actually were using a swordian. I dropped 2 of my high level people because they were getting boring. Then I got this guy with a bow, and a bard. It was very fun to see all new attacks and strategys to use.

Overall, you will like this game. As you can see, battling is top notch, even though it can get frequent, if you buy items to ward off monsters, you shouldn't have a problem.

This may be a very old game but it is FUN

The graphics might look bad compared to current day game graphics but this rpg is just plain fun. There are slightly different versions but they are all basically the same thing. As for the story line, some people love it and others don't but it's not one of those 'nothing goes wrong' story lines, you will want to get through the tough parts of the game to see what will happen next.

It's quite an average length for a game but it can take some people a while to figure out what to do, luckkily it is not hard to find free online guides that will help you through the game if you can't figure it out. There is only one aspect of the game that just isn't so wonderful, the world map, it has a terrible worl map but atleast it gets the job done.

This makes a unique rpg because you can put things in you 'food sack' that could raise or lower some of your characters abilities or status effects, but they will not starve if you leave it empty. Also there are plenty of side quests and tasts you can complete for people as you make your way through the story, including a secret ending which hardly anyone knows about (try doing a search for it)

The battle system is simply incredible, many things can go on at once and there's even a special way to get more than one player to join you in battle. It's a real time battle system that gives you a fun experience with plenty of beautiful spells and special abilitys to stare at. You can command certain characters to only focus on weak or strong enemys, defence, or to just heal. While the other three characters either do the spells or abilities on their own or do what you told them to, you use your codtomized controller buttons to use certain abilitites. A god example is that eventually you cna throw your sword at and enemy cause damage but then all you can do is kick and punch until you retrieve it. And if you ever get tired of the same voices saying the same spells then you can switch their 'swordians' and hear whole different voices for different spells during the battle.

You can always change any character's name anywhere during the game, that way you dont have to be stuck with the original names like in final fantasy.

This game is very enjoyable even if the characters are semi-small almost anyone can enjoy playing it and I highly reccomend that you buy it! it is an excelent game that may be rated T for teen but i played around when I was nine years old so i dont thinkyou really need to worry about that too much. If you're considering it for your children then it would be a good idea because there's alot of reading so they won't be completely lazy. (im a 'child' myself ^_^)

Just buy the game, its fun, its cheap (i saw a copy in stores for $120 because tis kinda hard to find) and its just worth buying

A new generation of gaming

This game is as good as the first or well the one like it! (Tales of Phantasia) which has the same battle and the same item types. USe combos and depend on the computer to help you when your in need. Focus members of your group to attack or to stand back and let you do all the work. With a speacil item you get shortly in the game you and a friend can fight evil back into the darkness of which it came. Great attacks, variety of towns, weapons, items and charaters. This is a great game that should be in your home right now!

FUN FUN FUN

I love this game it is so much fun! It's so hard for me to find RPGs I like but I definitely like this one. The characters kind of remind me of Slayers. Especially Stahn (the main character), he kind of looks like Gourry (and acts like him too).
