About 3 years ago I walked into a Blockbuster looking for a game to rent. Started walkin through the isles when I saw Suikoden 2. I had heard from a friend that it was good . So... I rented it. I have three words for you. IT WAS AWESOME!I had it only for a week and I got up to the the final boss! Who I will leave anonymous for you people who haven't gotton there yet. I couldn't believe such an incredible storyline. From the moment I turned it on it enthralled me. I played it for hours on end without eating or sleeping... until it had to go back four days after the return date. Honestly I don't think there is any true gamer out in the world who can play this game and not like it.

It Beats Out Even The First...

When this game first came out, I had no interest in it. There was just something about it. I was more interested in the first, with its more shallow plotline and lighter story, than the emotional, thrilling ride that the second gave. Yet now that I have finished the second Suikoden (missing 37 stars, my bad!), I can tell you one thing. This game is one of the best RPGs out there.

The story is emotional and excellently put. I won't bother telling you of what it is, since you can just as easily read about it, but its heart-wrenching and perfect. You literally feel for the characters. Yet there isn't just deep emotions and sadness. I assure you that you will get a darn good laugh as well. Whether from Viktor and Flik busting each other (as they like to do during the entire game), or from your own enemies (yes, they know how to make you laugh), you won't just be upset, you'll also laugh your head off (but be sure to pick it back up to continue playing the game). This game is not a drama-filled creation, nor a light-hearted child's play. It runs the way a person's life would run -- There's a war, and you can expect sadness, cruelty, drama, even stupidity... But don't forget the laughs, the romance (failed most of the time), and the fun.

The game plays smoothly as well. This game has not locked up on me, not once, unlike the first Suikoden. There was not a single time when it froze or wouldn't work, and my copy is an old one! It ran smoothly, not pausing in the least. Unlike some games, where the game pauses before slipping into a cinema, Suikoden II flows right into the cinema without a single pause. The entire game simply flows along, without pause, and without a single freeze-up.

While the graphics are 2D and definitely outdated, locations are detailed, and specifically change. Villages will go from standing, to burned, to half-repaired (to a point). Your castle will grow, rather than stay the same (and you will be lost for 5000 hours trying to figure out where everything is). In the cinemas, the graphics are smooth and well-done, though still a bit on the outdated side. Music score is excellent. Unlike Suikoden, which had some music that made you shriek and flee with terror, Suikoden II does not have a single music score that made me cringe or even show signs of discomfort. Each score is beautifully done, and rather catchy too, if, of course, repetative. Despite its repatative nature, however, you can't be disappointed.

108 characters?! That's right, the 108 Stars of Destiny are here again, and as usual, each character is different. From a stuck-up mage-warrior to a clueless-beyond-relief teleporting mage, each character has their own personality, and own abilities. Furthermore, each character will normally have something different to say depending on what's going on. For once, the characters are not just "robots"... They actually have "life", so to speak. You can truly love some characters, and hate others, and that's what you want in an RPG, right?

Battles are unique. There are three types of battles, and each type is smoothly spread through-out the game. One-on-one battles are rare, but their rarity wasn't disappointing, and I honestly didn't miss them. Tactic, war-time battles were often, but most of the time there was a predetermined win-lose situation; disappointing, but there are times when your brain is actually necessary. And finally, your average "fight monsters with your party" battles. You get six people to fight against the monsters, and combining their abilities can actually mean win or loss. Combination attacks, Runes (magic), weapons, stats, range... All of them are important in creating your party. You cannot just throw together a bunch of people and expect to win without doing something, whether sharpening their weapons, giving them tons of armor, or placing them in the back row and (hopefully) out of harm's way. For example, a mage in the front will do no good since mage's often have low defense, but placing a high-defense warrior in the front can make for a living, fighting barricade. I think Suikoden II is one of the few games where you actually have to use your head.

Now, I'm sure you're tired of hearing me talk about the greatness of the game. Of course it has its flaws. Grammatical and spelling errors, no doubt caused by translation problems, are hilarious. ("So, let us here it", instead of "let us hear it") There are also times when the wrong person is talking, or the wrong person is spoke of. In the end, however, the problems aren't so bad as for you to not figure it out in the end. They are also a bit on the rare side, and do not make the game seem too "error-filled" or childish. Sometimes it can get a bit confusing on where you have to go and what you have to do... Sometimes things just seem to happen randomly, with no direct idea of what to do. There are those traditional times when you just want to kick the character and scream "DUH! YOU IDIOT!" And of course finding all 108 Stars is a pain, but that's the challenge of the game.

Overall, I think that the game's flaws are far beaten against its brilliance. If you can somehow manage to afford it (not everyone is lucky enough to get hand-me-down games from friends, like me), be sure to buy it. Your money will be well spent.

An absolute classic

Easily the best RPG I have ever played. Graphics are not the best, but the battle system, immersive storyline, great music, detailed cities, and unique characterizations are phenomenal. Unlike many future RPG's, the load times for Suikoden 2 are very short, most likely due to the substandard graphics. If you can get over the graphics, the rest of the gameplay is incredible. The plot is unforgettable, and collecting the 108 stars of destiny is challenging and fun. Many side-quests, secrets, and player choices make this RPG one of my favorites to this day. Suikoden 2 is a classic.

Fan for life

It's been so long since I purchased this game, but despite how old it is, the fun factor of this game is just unbelievable. The plot is by no means dry. Music is appropriate during cut scenes. The anime portraits are beautifully drawn. Should you allow yourself, this game can definitely move you to tears, laughter, and, of course, anger. You'll find yourself attached to certain characters within the 108 stars of destiny because they all have unique personalities. And yes, there are minigames, as well as plenty of "hidden" characters/items.

Those of you who have been exposed to the current generation graphics might have to readjust slightly-keep in mind this game is great by playstation 1 standards. However, if you refuse to play this game because of it's old school graphics, then you are just missing out. And as the other reviewers have already stated, this game's a keeper.

Best classic RPG to date

... one of the best one's would have to be Suikoden 2. This is the only orginal ... game i have left but sold all my other games because it is that ... good. ... . Forget the new breed of games which offers top class graphics(no offence the ... games are great), this will keep you busy for hours. I have play suikoden over and over again and still love it. A good story of friendship and war in ancient timeline. Over a hundered palyable characters and vast lands to explore with characters having rune powers such as summonings, elemental powers and more. There is to much to talk about this game, any rpg lover must get this. This is a five star game hands down.

Konami can do RPGs too

Konami's Suikoden has always been by favorate RPG series next to Final Fantasy. Though the only reason I put FF above it is because of graphics. Suikoden's battle system is pretty tight. You fight with 6 characters at a time instead of the traditional 3. Once your characters get pretty strong, you'll never have to waste much time on weaker enemies. You can just hit auto, and all 6 charcters will attack at once. Runes suppy a character with magic. Though unlike most RPGs where magic is just a non-physical attack, in Suikoden magic is pretty powerful. Therefore the number of times you use it in battle is limited. Suikoden features up to 200 characters. Some returning from the first, others brand new. Of course, when dealing with that many characters the only true difference between them is their appearance, weapons and background. There battle options would pretty much be the same. Some characters can do speacial tag -team like moves with each other. {Example: Father and son etc}

The game features 2 kinds of battles. Normal and Army. In the army battle, your crew {of however many you have at the time} arespit into groups of 3. Each group represents a unit. You can customize the groups to your liking. Depending on what characters are in a group will determine how strong that unit is.
One of the funnest aspects of the game is its castle. It starts off as an abandoned castle. Yet after you gain enough people it will slowly grow bigger and bigger until its a full-fledged town.
Certain characters may open resturants or inns, shops, etc. I personally have no complaints with the game. If you play games for fun and gameplay this is it. For those looking for graphics this isn't for you.

Best Story Line Ever!

Suikoden II for the Playstation is one of the best (if not the best) RPG's of all time. Suikoden I and II both came out during a time where Final Fantasy ruled the playstation. While I do love the FF series, Suikoden's story line is just way to good to be overshawdowed. While Final Fantasy has continued to build a series on great graphics, solid gameplay, and good storyline, Suikoden has built a great series not using cinematics and 3d graphics. Yet, Suikoden holds its own by providing an amazing storyline with outstanding gameplay. I think with Suikoden III now being on the PS2, more people will be exposed to this great series, and hopefully play these previous titles. If i could, I would give tis game 10 stars out of five. However, with these limitations I'll just have to leave it at five stars and hope that everyone who reads this buys this game. A MUST FOR ALL RPG LOVERS!
