I'll make this short and sweet. Suikoden 2 is the greatest rpg of it's time. For the max kind of graphics and overall game capabilities available at the time Suikoden 2 did extraordinarily well. However, if the game came out today I'd only give it a crappy 4 out of 10 rating. FF 10 blows this game out of the water!! Plus, no game (AND I MEAN ABSOLUTELY NO GAME) is worth over $100. I sold my copy a year ago for $75 and just recently tried to buy the game again because of Suikoden 5 coming out and I wanted the whole collection. I could not believe how much the game goes for online or at all for that matter. I don't care how rare a game is. As a matter of principle and good business ethics I'd strongly urge all people to not purchase this game unless the price goes down.
I'll give it 108 stars if I could!

No other videogame has ever managed to capture my attention so much than this Konami classic. "Suikoden 2" is simply a brilliant role paying game, and it's no surprise the majority of the reviewers before me gave it 5 stars. So what is all the fuss about?
1.) First all, "Suikoden 2" gives you COMPLETE liberty on how to beat the game. Many other games are plain boring in the sense that many factors are already given to you. Not in this case. In Suikoden, YOU get to choose your hero's name, the name of the castle you'll eventually construct, the characters who you wish to make part of your army, the types of runes attached to the characters etc. etc. You will also have the possibilty to choose which sentences your hero says during the adventure. And if that's not enough, you will also have the chance to decide which ending you'd prefer for the game!
2.) You have a total of 108 CHARACTERS to choose from in order to form your army!
3.) Character development is simply incredible. You'll unexpectedly find yourself symphatising with many of the characters present in the game, and will feel a sort of remorse when one of them is killed in battle. I know this sounds kind of silly, but it's true.
4.) The plot of is one of the greatest I've ever encountered, together with Metal Gear Solid (not coincidentally another Konami game.)
5.) There are absolutely NO loading times between battles!
6.) The graphics are relatively superior to other role playing games.
7.) The magical runes and the visual effects they create whenever they are unleashed are simply amazing!
8.) There are many other sub-games present in the videogame, particularly of interest the cooking contest you can play in your castle.
9.) The musical score of the game is also pretty cool.
10.) There are three different types of battle modes - a) a personal duel between your Hero and the antagonist b) the most common type of battle which involves your (max.) 6 group of warriors facing the villain/s c) and a strategy battle mode in which your army of soldiers has to face the enemy's army. All the 3 battle modes are fun and challenging to play.
Well, these are 10 good reasons to own this game. I hope they are enough to convince you that "Suikoden 2" is one of the greatest videogame experiences ever!

For people who have played (Genso)Suikoden, they will be delighted to know that the graphics in Suikoden II are much better, and the character portriats are clearer. Suikoden II has GREAT music. Music that can even touch your heart and set you thinking. One good example of this would be a piece entittled "Retrospection", which is played at the begining of the game after you, the hero, tries to escape the Highland army's ambush by jumping off a cliff near a waterfall with your best friend Jowy... Then there are the 108 stars you can collect along the way as you play. Some of the stars join you automatically after certain events. Some of the stars, however, will need you to fufil some requirements before you can get them. In Suikoden II you get to play games like "Whack a mole", buy animals from salesmen in villages for ranch use, see special scenes in the baths if you bring certain characters in, and, best of all, you can load your saved data from Suikoden I and recruit the hero from Suikoden I (even though he's not one of the 108 stars)! So, if you want to really get something worth your money, get Suikoden II.......after all, (in my opinion,)it's THE game of the century/millennium!
A great sequel to a great game!

I've played this game and it's predicesor I don't know how many times. The plot is huge---the characters are fully developed and the game play is excellent. I've laughed and cried at the actions of the characters that I met while playing this game. The graphics aren't that advanced as some of the more advertised games---but the plot and characterization more than makes up for it.
One of the most awe-inspiring RPG's I have ever played

This is a RPG at its best. Beautiful music, incredible story, and pretty graphics. There are few flaws, and they are all easy to ignore. This one will keep you up for awhile.

Now Being A Tough Guy On The Outside, This May Be A Surprise, But This Game Is One Of The Most Emotional Games I've Ever Played. And Me Having A Soft Spot For Classical Music The Game REALLY Hits Home.
Two Friends....Together Till The End... Until A Everything Goes Wrong. Attacked By Their Own Country Two Bricademen Now Accused Of Being Spies Turn A Flee.
THIS GAME IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE. With Very Exceptional 2D Graphics And The Unique Yet Accessible Rune System This Game Is Great. But That's Not All Folks Order Now And Not Only Get The Previously Mentioned Items But Also Get Not One, Not Two, But 108 Stars Of Destiny! Each One More Valuble Then The Next!
But Going Even Going Futher With That Is You Can Use Previous Game Data From The First Suikoden! But One Thing OverShadows All Of That, The Very Emotional, Deep, And Epic Storyline. Plot Twists, Unexpected Deaths And Betrayls.
My Most Favorite Part Is Not The Game Itself. But Its The Beginning Sequence.THE BEST.
One of the best games I've ever played!!

If you love RPGs, I guarantee that you'll absolutely love Suikoden 2. For that matter, you 'll love Suikoden, also. I have played and beaten this game 3 or more times, and I never get bored of it. Each time I find a new secret or another character that I didn't know how to get before. This game is really fun because you can make your own army, with many different characters that have different abilities. It is also filled with emotion. At one point, I actually cried while watching a sequence in the game. You should buy it. And if you don't want to buy it, at least rent it. I heard they are coming out with a third Suikoden, and I know I'm going to buy it.
I LOVE THIS GAME!!

I ran across this game (...)right when it first came out, and I picked it up more as a fluke than for any other reason. I am glad I did. Graphically this game is in 2D, but it is done very well. Each person is easily recognizable, and there expressions come across quite clearly (with emotions appearing above the characters heads in little bubbles!).
As far as normal random battles goes, suikoden is fairly straight forward. 6 people can join in fights, with a front line and a back line. Different people have different weapons that have different attacking abilities. Ie. weapons like bows can attack the enemies from the front and back row, staffs can attack only the front line of enemies, but they can be positioned in either your front or back row, and swords/axes can only hit the front line of the enemy, and only from the front line of your ranks.
One nice ability for later on is the option to choose 'let go'. If your party is crossing an area of the world map, or if you are re-exploring a dungeon from much earlier in the game, the option to 'run' is taken away, and the option 'let go' is placed there instead. Basically it is a means to escape the tedium of random battles that wouldn't provide enough experience of money to make the time of fighting it worthwhile. Plus it works 100% of the time. :)
The most interesting part of the game though is that fact that it incorporates more than just standard random battles, it also has full army battles that involve most of your fighting party members broken up into groups of 3. Each group has its own attack, defence, and special abilitys. Most of the time the battles are very enjoyable, however there are a few battles that rely on luck, so you just have to keep plugging away at them for a while until you finally manage to beat the enemy.
Also the game features a third battle system called duels, which are (just as the name emplys....) 1 on 1 duels. There aren't that many duels during the course of the game, and they are conducted in a rock paper scissors manner.
The best part of the game though is just playing through the story and becoming the hero of legend. Nothing is quite as satisfing as walking through your castle (which starts out run down and dilapidated and ends up quite spectacular) and talking to all the various people that have come to live there because of their firm (and very vocalized) belief that YOU are the one person capable of being a hero.
Suikoden may have a funny name, but it is a game that you would be a fool to bypass.

Suikoden 2 gets my vote for best RPG this year. It doesn't sport the eye candy of Final Fantasy 8, but it's got FF8 beat in the story department. Searching out each of the 108 characters means you won't lose interest, and you'll want to have them all to get the best ending. Best of all, it's a story about war, not this soft-core romance stuff that the other games seem to be moving to. Suiko 2 is an old-school gamer's delight.
