One of the best in it's time

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

What can I say? I remember the first time I played this game, how much the atmosphere drew me in and almost made me forget it was a video game. I remember the first time I jumped because I was so focused on exploring and wasn't prepared for that first dog.

I originally owned this game on the now defunct Sega Saturn. I was thoroughly enjoying the game, and my Saturn died when I was about 3/4 of the way finished. That was about when the Saturn was seeing it's last days, so I didn't feel like dropping more money into another Saturn, and at that time, I just figured I'd get Resident Evil for the PC. Now that I have a PS2, I decided to get this for that system. I'm really glad I did.

Although the graphics are dated by today's standards, they are still sufficient for a great game experience, and all of that atmosphere makes up for the graphical limitations the game had when it was originally released.

The thing that I most like about this disc is that it has the original and director's cut both on one disc. I bought it for the original, but I'm looking forward to the slight changes in the director's cut when I finish that.

So, what it comes down to is this: If you like creepy games, and can find the enjoyment in slow exploration type games (I was a big multi-player Quake fan for a long time because of the non-stop action, but this was a nice change of pace), pick this up for sure. It's a classic, and will always be a fun game to play.

The Differences between RE D-C and RE2

Since last night I've been waiting to do this review, because I've been studying the exact differences from RE2 and RE Directors Cut. This review will really help for someone who has played RE2 but is wondering what RE DC is about. Well, you've came to the right place. First of all, here are the facts:

1. Each zombie takes 5 shots NO MATTER WHAT. (with the Beretta)

2. Jill is a blonde all though she doesn't look like it (a very dumb blonde)

3. BARRY HAS A MAGNUM AND HES PROUD!!!

4. You have to kill zombies up to four times if you leave the room when you shoot them down. (that means they come back alive once they are dead and you leave the room...the just pop up!)

5. This game has hilarious dialogue!

Well, speaking of dialogue, the grammar is also very bad...and I mean VERY bad. Examples are: (when you pick up the 1st floor map) "You got the 1st floor map" RE2 says "you've taken the 1st floor map" that makes more sense. "You got the acid rounds"...funny sometimes. Also, what I found is that Jill doesn't know what blood is. Barry is inspecting a pool of red liquid on the dining room floor. Jill comes over and has the nerve to ask "What is it?" and she stays there and studies it...??? Barry replies with "I THINK it is blood. I hope this is not Chris's blood!" And they have exaggeration at the completely wrong times. But when there is a big monster coming they just talk "wow. its a monster. what do we do?" and when there is like a door that doesnt open (during movie scenes) they say "THIS DOOR WONT OPEN!! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO??" Also, a really hilarious part is when Barry hands Jill the acid rounds Jill says that he should keep them for himself, and Barry replies "No that's okay...I have THIS!!!" And holds up his Magnum...I laughed my head off...he sounded so stupid! No offence to the makers of RE or anything but it is just so funny!

Another fact is that the camera angles are bad, but the puzzles are harder. Hmmm? Resident Evil is a very very very good game...but it is just the dialogue and camera angles...ive been talking it down but now its time to tell you that it is DEFINATELY worth getting, despite it's happy mediums.

So theres a few final things I have to say here:

1. Barry has a magnum 2. Wesker has shades 3. And the three zombies at the top of the stairs above the M Storeroom 1F sound like cows.

Cheers! ~Jongles

A Great Game With More Flaws Than Any Other Out There

I have played this through several times because the puzzles are excellent and you kill zombies. There are many puzzles I still haven't solved and I may end up playing though again just to see whats there. Also, some of the graphics were nice and I love the fear, even though I played RE's 2&3 first, this one scared me the most (but being the first I played, only RE2 gave me nightmares for months). I will agree, this game is hard core, and there is plenty to like about it. I love interactive movie feeling like Final Fantasy VII and Wing Commander: Prophecy.

However, now I will list what I didn't like. Why I only gave it three stars. Well, to start off, the cinematics are not only outdated, but horribly done to begin with. If I made the game, I would have just said: "Y'know, that was really bad, let's just not have a cinematic." Also, the movement is quite shabby and fake looking, and while a zombie hovers into a standing position, you can't shoot him until he is standing up and walking toward you.

If you think that such a picky thing about positioning, picking up items is worse. You can commonly at a position in which you appear to be facing an item perfectly, but you can't pick it up, because it's really 30 degrees to your left or something like that. With these positions, you are forced to listen to mind-numbing music. I thought the sound effects were bad and the voice acting made the sound bad enough, but they had to go and give us the abolute worst soundtrack you will ever find, for any game or B-Movie. The only trouble with the music is that you require listening to the sound effects to survive, and so you must endure the music as well!

However, the music is beaten in abysmal-ness by its dialogue. The script is terrible, and to say the voice acting is laughably bad would be a huge understatement. It doesn't end there. The pitiful dialogue scenes do nothing but tell one of the most cliche-ridden plots ever devised. You have police traitors, huge creatures that come out of rooms that you just came out of to kill you, and worst of all, you have about three dozen times through the two stories (which are almost identical) where people walk in just in the nick of time to save the other. That type of stuff makes me sick. You are alone for about two hours, when suddenly a trap goes off, right as your partner happens to be right outside.

Lets rate everything: Images: 8, Movement: 5, Script: 1.5, Sound Effects: 6, Background Story: 5, Music: 0.5, Voice Acting: 0, Puzzles: 10+, Mosters: 5/6, Weapons: 8, Fear: 9.5, Plot/Sequence of Events: -2.

A Great Game, thats a lot of fun...

Resident Evil Director's Cut is a great game. It's not all violence and gore.(though there is some) It's got a pretty good story-line and a solid cast. And one of the best things about the game is that the puzzles in the game are educational and stimulating. A relistic yet not relistic game. A real mystery game, because somebody's the "Bad Guy" but I won't give away who. Even the ending was a surprise but I won't give it away. A masterpiece of a game that will defently go on my shelf.

Instant classic

Capcom defined the genre of survival horror with a game filled with challenge and gameplay depth -and startled gasps! The atmosphere, especially on harder months, is very tense, making it so wonderful. Beware those nasty hunters! This game is a must-own, along with its sequel.

If you like horror you'll like this.

I don't think there are many games out there that will scare and surprise you like this game will. (Crows made me nervious for weeks after playing) Good weapons selection and plenty game play to keep you buisy. The game has good atmosphere and the puzzles aren't so hard that you will pull out your hair. Overall, it's not a game your friends can just pick up and play, you have to work at it a while. So don't buy it thinking you can play with a friend.

The RE Series proud.

The original Resident Evil changed the game industry forever. Although the Survival Horror genre is certainly old, being Interplay's "Alone in the Dark" the first example to come to my mind, RE sent the genre and the video game industry where it had never before ventured.

The idea, simple as it sounds, harbors with it the strength to create a fine video game experience: Lock yourself at a mansion filled with zombies and other creatures plus limited ammo, and try to get yourself out of this.

This is the only game of the series that is worth of any praise, not only because it did much for the industry, but because of its game play value.

A B-Movie Great!

This is the O.G. cheeseball zombie horror flick.. and you are right in the middle of it all. You have to figure out what happened, what to do next, where to go next, what's going to happen. Although I said it was cheesy, the monsters and weapons are NO laughing matter.

The gameplay and controls are logical and not a hinderance. Thoroughly enjoyable game. Although the story does tie a bit into RE2, each game completes itself, so you don't have to play this one to know what's going on in the sequel. I would recommend playing this one & then the second one.

Great Game

This was a great game. It is gory like the second one but is more fun because you only have one way of beating it which is very challenging.

This game is the best on the playstation!
