Worse than Civilization 2

But in a good way. I've probably spent a couple thousand hours playing Civ (mostly on airplanes and in hotel rooms) over the past few years. RCT is well on the way to equaling that record.

First, the good news. It is a completely absorbing game which allows you to be obsessively interested in the cost of french fries (or "chips" in the English-English version), the distribution of ice cream stands, and the correct number and distribution of benches in an amusement park (you don't want too many benches -- you want people paying to sit on a ride, not bench-warming for free). It is a great lesson in microeconomics. My favorite solution for customers whining about standing in line (and they do whine -- individually and in groups) is to raise prices. This shortens lines with affecting total rider load -- since your coasters should be near capacity all the time. The ability to go from high-level issues like marketing campaigns and positioning major new attractions (like of a bazillion types of roller coaster), to finding out what one individual customer thinks about the drink stations is challenging, fascinating, and (I tried not to say it) cool.

As a game, it is first rate. I don't know how they get this kind of performance on my over-the-hill-computer (an old P200, without MMX), but I'll take it anyway. I tried the downloadable demo on my PIII-500 at work and it was much crisper and responded better. (Am I crazy to think about spending $1500 on a new computer to play a $29 game?)

The problems are small by comparison to the enjoyment of playing. Like most games, it needs better "help" functions when you are learning it. It really needs an off-line coaster builder and tester. In the real world you can engineer new amusement rides without actually building a full-scale model. In RCT the only way to test new coasters is to build them and run them in real time. If you make mistakes it can be ruinously expensive to tear them down and fix them. Sometimes it is hard to place large, pre-made features because of land, trees, other terrain features, and other rides. The interface tells you cannot build something because of a tree, but it is not always easy to tell which tree. My screen is a 17", and I wish it was bigger for this game. I can tell there are some small things going on, but I have trouble making them out.

The only major flaw has been that the game crashes frequently on my system running Windows 98. I've loaded the latest patches, but it still fails once in awhile, and ALWAYS crashes EVERY time I click on the "pause" button. I know this is some diabolical combination of factors in my Win98 installation, but I may never figure it out. Pausing is for wimps, anyway.

The first night I played it (after sending my kids to bed so I could get near it) I was up three hours after my bed time. This is what makes it worse than Civ 2.

Warning! This game may result in a loss of sleep

Roller Coaster Tycoon is heaps of fun. Of course there are the obvious perks like designing your own roller coasters and managing a theme park. But that's just the beginning. You can also track individual guests, name them, move them around and watch their moods change. Are they happy? Hungry? Nauseous? If you are going to be successful at this game you better make sure you know. You may think you're in charge but that's far from true. Your guests are running the show here and it's your job to keep them happy. If you don't you won't like the results.

Do you have security guards? If you don't guest will break benchs and tip over trash cans. Are there seats by the more nausea inducing rides? If not your park will become far from pleasant and that will effect your park's attendance.

Once you've built the park it's loads of fun just sitting back and checking individual guest's feelings. And make sure to have the rollercoasters inspected or else there might be a tragic crash resulting in the loss of innocent simulated lives. Not to mention the horror that occurs if you forget to build a path leading from the exit of a ride placed over water. Your guests actually drown! It may sound crazy but you'll start caring about the welfare of these little simulated people. I definately recommend it to young and old.

Roller Coster Tycoon blows the Sim City series out of the water. In this game you try to complete objectives by building an amusements park that will keep your guests happy. You will get a limited amount of money to start than once your park becomes popular you can raise prices to earn more money. Your park will only do good if you have crazy rides and food, drink, and bathrooms. You can put out add campaigns and hire and fire workers. Every kind of stand and ride you can think of will be in this game. If you don't want to use the standard designs for the rides you can come up with your own crazy concaktion and by the way the guests will like that a lot better. You will wish you can go to these parks, ride these rides, and eat these foods. I strongly suggest that you get this game whatever age you are.

ADDICTING!! I used to get mad at my teenage son for playing this game, until I played it myself and found out how educational AND fun it can be. I was kicking him off so I could Play!!! I have been playing it for 2 years now and still love it. I got Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. Love that too, but the games are harder to get passed the challenge. A little frustrating but still would highly recommend to anyone. Great for any age.

I used to play this game all the time! I remember having the best park on the official website and made it downloadable. I quit playing after the downloadable version was off the website and it somehow got deleted off my computer. This game has quite a bit of depth, and is the best game in the tycoon series byfar! My park was so huge though, that all i could do when i went on to it was just watch people do stuff and watch my money pile up. I had absolutely no space left, and I didn't want to touch my park because it was so cool to look at. You can customize a lot of stuff in this game as well. not just roller coasters, but water slides, kid car rides, go-kart tracks, and more. I definitely reccomend this game to any person because in my opinion this is better than RCT2 or RCT3, so forget about them and buy this.

In my opinion, it's the best game on the PC.

This game is REALLY fun. In the game you build Your own amusement park by building roller coasters and other rides. If you like designing things this is your game! A bonus is that you can name the rollercoasters and people and trap people in the park. Sometimes your roller coasters and Whoa Bellys will explode and people die. Sometimes people puke, and other times, your park gets awards. Once you start playing you won't want to stop.

It's so realalistic! It's practice to be responsible and to test your skill of carefullness and things like that. It can be difficult when there are many guests, but the best part is at the end, when you complete your assigned task and people let their baloons rise in the air and how they keep constantly applauding for you!

This game is perfect for the kid in the house or just the kid in you. The 3-d graphics will blow you away! Once you start building the "ultra" roller coaster a new one comes and the new "ultra" roller coaster will blow the other's out of the water. the game just gets harder and more fun. Can you operate an entire park? Well you 'otta try. This is a must play game! Hey don't take it from me.

The Best Amusement Park for Your Money

For the price you couldn't have as much fun at a real amusement park. This game has enough elements to keep you playing for a long time. The only thing I wish for is a scenerio editor. If you complete all scenerios you get to do the mega park which is about the same as though you were building your own scenerio. Now I can't wait for Christmas so I will have the add on pack.

This game is seriously addicting! You play for hours without noticing the time - that is how much fun it is! I never saw such a creative game! You get to design your own amusement park and the fun part is you have goals to achieve. It's awesome - you have people throwing up, laughing, complaining etc. You actually get feedback from your interactive customers! You won't be disappointed!
