Great game. Great graphics. Not much replayability though.

Don't get me wrong. I rated this game highly and I stand by my review score. The game has done many things correctly and being an XBOX launch title, it's amazing that it came out this good. The graphics are unreal...years ago we dreamed about realism like this. Everything looks photorealistic with real shadowing! XBOX power is truly evident here! The sounds are pretty sparse but get the job done. The control is so-so...definitely go with the advanced controllers set up to enable lateral movement with the triggers, but beware, this takes some time to get used to! The missions are fun and diverse, but therein lies the problem. The game is hard on some levels and if you are unsuccessful in a mission, you start back in the shop screen and are forced to buy or switch to a new plane and then you must backtrack to the mission where you failed. That's wouldn't be such a big deal, but there are times when you must complete several smaller sub-missions in order to access the main mission area. The sub-missions are rather boring...take out a plane or two or some ground targets. Don't take any careless damage in these missions because you need all the hit points you can get for the larger missions. After a few tries, the game clicks and you begin to progress, but the whole restarting and backtracking aspect does begin to try your patience after a while. No mulitplayer either, but I really don't care too much about that.

I love the game and I'm glad I own it. However, once you beat the game (if you're skilled enough), the incentive to go back and play the game again isn't high enough because of the repetition involved.

AFDS the Best Armchair Air Force Ever, Over 70 planes.

When I ordered my XBox, Sept 1st, 2001. I ordered 3 Launch Games also. Halo, Oddworld, and Air Force Delta Storm. I have had my XBox for 7 mos now, and AFDS is still the game I play the most. Flying games have always been my favorite games. AFDS gives armchair pilots, the best and biggest flying game Air Force, ever put in any flying game. You get over 70 jets, the most famous combat aircraft in the world from the late 1950s to present and beyond. Aircraft from US, UK, France, Far East, Russia, Canada, Middle East, China. Plus you get many past, present, and future jet prototypes, including many stealth aircraft.
F4, A10, F15, F22, F26, Su-34, JSF, Mig 1.44, Lavi, F2, Super Harrier, Yak 141, F117 Nighthawk, Su-32, and dozens more. You fly them in over 50 missions, air to air, air to sea, and air to ground, and combination missions. The game is by far the best looking eye candy jet sim ever, high res models, textures, and amazing light and shadows effects everywhere. The Dolby 5.1 combat sounds are great. Jets scream, the missile effects are so good you can dodge them by the audio. Tracers sound different, depending on where the bullets hit. Explosions shake your walls.
Enemy AI is good for a air combat game. Planes fly acrobaticly, will make head on passes at you, fly in formations with wingmen, always try to get on your six. Enemy gunners, and SAMs are deadly shots, so you have to out fly them also.
AFDS offers lots of variety in planes and missions. Replay is high. The game works great with the XBox Thrustmaster Flightstick. A hard to find game in US, since it sold out shortly after launch. Game available in Japan and UK, under different names. The best sim lite, action jet flyer ever. WOrth a [$$$] bucks, if you love jet flying games. Free Demo version on some OXM DVDs.

Best combat flight sim, yet.

I received this bundled with my Xbox as a Christmas present. Initially, I thought the flight controls were "child-like". I then enabled "expert controls" and off I went, into the wield blue yonder!!!

The A-10 handles VERY true-to-life (very familiar with the aircraft). The F-14 and F-15 are a blast to fly--and are 100% realistic. If you doubt this, hit a typical mission with the F-14, hit mach 1.8 and then slow down to 200mph and do some tight turns. Watch the replay and check out the wings--the variable sweep is completely accurate!!!

Missions may be slightly repetitive, but flying an aircraft and shooting air and ground targets pretty much sums up being a fighter pilot. It is the finesse and skill with which you take out said targets that makes you an "Ace".

My only gripe is the throttle. It defaults at 25% (sticks there) and you either accelerate to 100/120% or brake down to 0%. There is not incremental control of the throttle (ie: set it at 90% and leave it, hands-off).

Great game--a MUST HAVE for the Xbox, if you love flying at all. Just remember to use "Expert Control".

I like it except...

The graphics are good, and I enjoy playing it but there are 5 fundamental problems with this game.

1. While I like having 60 missiles and unlimited fuel and bullets, a certain level of realism is lost.

2. You can't do barrel roles or flip upside down unless you do a loop, In other words the flight control leaves much to be desired

3. While it looks like there are lots of levels there really aren't. The same levels are hashed up over and over again. And the enemy does the same thing every time... once again there seems to be a fundamental lack of realism.

4. The replay does not let you pause fast forward or rewind...Or at least I have not figured it out yet.

5. No mutli-player support.

My sense is that this game was rushed out the door. I really enjoy playing it but my heart yearns for more realism. This is not a true simulation.

Best Air Combat Game Yet!

I've played many air simulation games but this one is by far the best. I was at the E3 convention when Microsoft first displayed the Xbox and was lucky enough to sample the game. It's controls, GRAPHICS and especially CONTROLS were AWESOME. Buy This game!

Don't expect a flight simulator - and don't waste your $

This game does have very nice graphics, but the flight "model" is pathetic. As another reviewer stated, you can't do barrel or aileron rolls, making it nearly impossible to get an advantage in dogfights. All you have are elevator and rudder control. Also, there is no real AI - it does appear the enemy does hte same thing every mission (once you get into a dogfight, the enemy will try to get into the best shooting position).
Knowing this, there is no way I would waste my money on this game - I got it as a gift. I can't believe some people here and on Ebay are paying big bucks for this game. Better to wait and hope someone comes out with something better.

Not a bad arcade style game

It is a fun game to play, but replaying some missions over again is more like an arcade game ... more than anything else. Granted in real life a pilot might have to hit tanks or other ground targets over and over or he might have to fight it out with a roaming CAP group, but the designers could have dressed it up better. It does take a little getting used to ie. to shoot, especially the mini guns, but it can be done. All in all, I rate it a 3.0 to 3.5 game. Get it and play it, but its not worth the megabucks it had been selling for, more of a 19.95 type game.

Best Air Fighter game ever!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 12

This is the best air fighter game I have ever played. The planes are modeled after military fighter jets and the weapons are realistic. True, there are no training courses or practice modes, but play this game for and hour and you will be able to fly any of the 75 planes that you choose to take on each mission. At the end of each mission the game automatically goes into replay mode and you can see what you did from different camera angles. The graphics are cool, from the sound of jets flying right by you to the vapor trails they leave behind.

The only thing I don't like about this game is that it does not give you the option of listening to music you have recorded on the Xbox.

Switch Controls to "ACE"

I found that if you go to options and change the control configuration from novice to ace, it will give you the ability to do barrel rolls and fly upside down. Very Fun Game in my opinion!

Xbox Enthusiast Must Have

If you're a collector, the fact that this game was in limited production alone should entice you to purchase. The game itself is pretty good. Like all games, there is room for improvement. To really enjoy this game you must set your controller to Expert or Ace. This really allows you to experience flight simulation. On novice control the game is boring.

Over 70 jets to choose from. The way the game works is you earn credit/dollars upon successful completion of missions. With those credits/dollars you enter the market place and purchase different aircraft. Be careful with what you buy. If you crash it, its gone until you go buy it again.

... Well worth the purchase. Some of the things I don't like about the game are the replay and the fact that you don't see yourself crash. It would be much better to see myself actually going down in flames. Some say I see that everyday.
