A Fantastic Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 25 / 28

If I hear one more sob story about what this game lacks, i think i'm gonna puke. The fact is that whatever shortcomings this game has, there's more than enough fun to overshadow them. I have beaten the game several times and I still haven't become tired of it. I don't think that swinging across the rooftops of New York will ever get boring-- but besides that, the player has at his disposal almost all of those wonderful spider-man powers, allowing you to explore every inch of the 3D environment. There are simple attacks for the newcomer, and more advanced web maneuvers to learn as you progress. Level objectives range from saving hostages to evading capture to the good old-fashioned boss beat-em-up. And once you're done, you get to go back and unlock all those secrets you missed the first time, definite replay value. There are four difficulty levels, easy, medium, hard, and a "kid mode" with adapted controls and gameplay for litle guys. And after seeing and playing both PSX and N64 versions, I can honestly say this really is a superior port of an excellent playstation game, a feat rarely seen. Spider-man is compatible with the expansion pack for Hi-res graphics, although it looks excellent without one. The only thing missing from the PSX version is the FMV cutscenes, but these were replaced with an ingenious "slide-show" feature, making the comic book theme that much stronger. This is definitely the best super-hero game I've ever played. If you like Spider-man, action games, or just fun in general, do yourself a big favor and buy this game. P.S.-If you are one of the unfortunate souls who were duped into buying Superman, this game will restore your faith in comic book licenses. I promise.

Fun Game!!

Spiderman is a very cool game for the N64. It's fun and challenging. The graphics are spectacular; better than the playstation version. It supports expansion pak for even better graphics and you MUST have a controller pak to save your game. The sound is good, just as good as the playstation version. HOWEVER, all the Full Motion Videos(FMV) in the playstation were cut out and replaced with a comic book pictures with sound effects. I liked the psx FMV better than the comic book though. MOST IMPORTANTLY are the controls. They're just awful. The standard for N64 controls is the B button for attacking and A for jumping. In spiderman, C down is used for punching, C left kicking. B button is used for zipping upwards on a web line which you hardly use. I've been playing for 7 hours and still haven't gotten used to the controls. So all in all, if you can stand missing the FMV, and the awful control scheme, you'll love this game every bit as much(if not more) than the playstation version. I give it a 4/5 stars because of the bad control and lack of FMV.

Spiderman is back

I haven't finished the game yet but, It is so fun that I have to write this review. This game is quite challanging from the start and it becomes pretty easy after awhile. For example the first stage: you must protect all of the hostages, one of them cannot die. If they do you start all over. It takes even strategy to make that not happen. This game is pretty much the same as the psx version but, the fmv's are missing but it is no biggie you do get clips as it was like a comic book. The sound and voices in the background are so spectacular, who ever thought that the 64 could handle that. The controls I have to agree is quite akward, whoever heard of punches and kicks on the c-buttons. But, you'll get used to it. I am giving this 5 stars still even if doesn't have the fmv's. Remember the fmv's are to relax and watch while the game play is what is important. Have a nice day.

JUSTICE HAS FINALLY BEEN SERVED

The superhero genre of video games is at peace. After years and years of wasted efforts on various systems (SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, N64, Sega Saturn, PSX)under different licenses ranging from Batman, (Batman Forever on SNES, Batman Returns on Genesis, and Batman&Robin on PSX) to Superman, (Superman on N64) and yes, even Spiderman (Spiderman: Maximum Carnage on Genesis, Spiderman on Genesis, Spiderman/X-Men:Arcades Revenge), justice has finally been served. A few months after its Playstation 1 release, Spiderman by Activision has finally swung its way over to the Nintendo 64 system. The gameplay and levels remain true to the Playstation version, except for the fact that the graphics have improvved and that some secrets have been removed and most of the passwords to access these secrets have been changed of course. Spiderman can move 360 degrees in 3D environments ranging from the rooftops of New York City to inside the Daily Bugle, where Spiderman's alter ego, Peter Parker works as a photographer, and even underground in New York City's sewer system! Due to the limitations of the N64, I'd say that nearly 80% of the Full Motion Video has been left out of the Nintendo 64 version. Instead the story telling is done thru comic book style storyboards made up of still frame images from the FMV's of the PSX version. As other reviews point out the only thing where Spiderman for the N64 lacks is in the control. The actions are assigned a little differently then what I am sure most fellow N64 gamers aren't used to, but with a little patience, you should be able to get used to the button layout. Sometimes, when navigating thru some levels, you may find yourself sticking to the walls when you don't mean to, for instance running to a door and trying to go thru it at a bad angle could cause Spidey to flip up onto the wall beside the door, when you really had intended to go thru the door! Fans and gamers alike will also be relieved to note that the only thing restricting Spiderman's powers is running short of web fluid, which can easily be picked up aplenty thruout each level and Spidey can store up to 10 web cartridges in his 'spider belt'. Thruout the game, comic book covers of some of the most valuable and important Spiderman comics can be found. Also as you progress thruout the game and beat it a few times, special costumes worn by Spiderman ove the years can be unlocked! Obviously, the game will have to be replayed over and over again to accomplish. Bottom line fellow webheads: BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!

It's a great game!

This game is the world's best superhero game. You can do anything Spider-Man can. Cling to anything, shoot a webline. If Spidey does it, you can! At least, once you get use to the controls. And all the enemies look great!

True to Spider-Man in Everyway Imaginable

At long last a game that does justice to everyone's favorite neighborhood Spider-Man. It's about time. For the first time ever, the gamer is now truly Spider-Man. Thanks to a 3-D environment, Spider-Man can finally do all the things he does in the comic books that he's never really been able to do in any other video game before. Previous games relied heavily on punch and kick attacks with little variation and the use of the webhead's webbing was all too limited. But now you'll be swinging and slinging like never before, battling several of Spidey's most classic foes like Doc Ock, Venom, and Rhino. Unfortunetly the N64 Spider-Man suffered in its conversion from the Playstation in that the "cinamatic sequences" have been reduced to cut scenes (page flips as it were). On the upside though the game has recieved some slightly improved graphics, which I hear are even better in the Dreamcast version of the game. Activision did a spendid job with Spider-Man, a game you'll play again and again, regarless of its faults (hey, no game is perfect), just to try out those nifty extra Spidey costumes. All hail the magnificent Stan "The Man" Lee.

You go, Tiger!

Whoever wrote that dumb synopsis at the very top obviously knows nothing about the webhead (or videogames in general, for that matter). So what if adventure is your reward? This game is original, and it rocks!

This game tries hard to please everyone. For the comic book fan, Spider-Man stays true to the comic pages it was born from. The layout of the game levels are introduced like comic book episodes. Many of your favorite characters not only make an appearance, their storylines and personalities are preserved. (Yes, Peter Parker cracks plenty of jokes!)

For the fans of good game play, hey, all I can say is hats-off to Activision. Spider-Man is a pleasant hero with dozens of actions; the man is practically a streetfighter. How they took Spider-Man's moves in the comic book and made them all simplified, playable and useful was nothing short of brilliant.

Furthermore, the levels are challenging yet correspond well to your experience. This game has high AI, so players must plan their strategies utilizing stealth, surprise attacks, combos, and even retreat. Through all this, animation flows smoothly, especially the looks of the hero himself.

The only thing bad things I can think of is that you need to buy that bloody controller pak before you can save -- so don't leave Target (oops, I mean Amazon) without it. Did you get that parents? It's the NINTENDO 64 CONTROLLER PAK, sold seperately to bite off more of that good beef Nintendo smells in your pockets while buying your kid a game.

Another bad thing is that the comic book setup may be choking on its own success: it assumes the player is already familiar with some Spiderman storylines. For example, on the second level, the story picks up right where Scorpion is about to lay Jameson to rest. Although he briefly states that it was Jameson that put him in that suit (true, true), the novice may still be completely confused as to who these people are, why they're in some building called the Daily Bugle, why they're fighting, etc. Either people will be frustrated with the pace, or they'll be curious and want to learn more about the Spider-Man saga.

The other thing was, um, the yellow light at the bottom of the sky scrapers. It's not necessarily bad, it just kind of rustles up some nightmarish Superman 64 flashbacks for me.

But as you can see, none of this stuff stopped me from giving it the full five stars. The lead character is one of the most likeable heroes not only in comic books but video-gaming now as well. This action title is wonderful; you'll be dreaming about it in your sleep. Let me repeat THIS GAME ROCKS!

I get to be Spiderman!!!

Forgive me if I sound too enthusiastic, but I love this game! It is just plain fun. What kid (or adult!) has not dreamed of being able to climb walls like Spiderman or shoot web and swing from building to building? You get to do all this and more in this game. It comes complete with 4 levels of play (including Kid level). The graphics are very good and interspersed with comic pages. Game on!

Spidey kicks butt!!

We rented the N64 version for my 5 year old before we bought it and he absoluley loved it. I liked that it had a kid mode, although my son is so adept he didn't play kid mode and still [did well]. The spidey sense was cool as well. The characters were awesome and we really liked reading the comic strips. All in all, I would definatly recommend this game for anyone, it really is a lot of fun, even for younger players.

Good action game.

I might just be a little partial to spiderman but this is one of the best games I have played in the last few months. A few of the good points are spidey can stick to walls, shot his web in differnt forms, and the farther you get the more suits you earn. The added bonus of finding special items in the game is challenging. The only thing that I can say bad about this game is that on the normal difficulty level I beat it in less than 24 hours. I still have yet to find all the missing comics and costumes. I suggest if you like action games that you buy this game.
