I know a lot of people think this is an amazing game, but I found it to be unsatisfying. If I'm going to race, I'd rather play an arcade-quality game like Daytona USA or Gran Turismo 3 or NASCAR Thunder. Diddy Kong Racing only held my attention for about 30 minutes, and then I gave it to my 3-yr-old nephew.
This game really sucks....

I am a fan of the Donkey Kong games. I have DK 1 & 2 on my GBA SP. So, I thoguht I would give this game a try. I bought it from Rhino Video Games for $9.99 you can bet that I am going to take it back in and swap it for antoher one maybe South Park or Mario 64.
The game has no real objective.

What can I say, this game was dumb! It's just a copycat of Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart 64 has freakin' fun! Diddy Kong Racing is a joke! I would have rated it as "0 stars," but unfortunately I don't have that option. If you want to give someone a hate gift, I recommend this. But don't blame me if they surprisingly love it.

Like most others who might've already discovered, this Nintendo video game IS pretty much for kids. That doesn't mean that many adults cannot find SOME fun with it.The player(s)have a chance to race on many tracks, like a dinosaur valley,an ice track,a volcano island, etc.Have to admit the graphics are good.At least I thought so.Can also switch over to this game to kill, say maybe thirty minutes.

As I am a big fan of Mario Kart, I was excited to hear about the release of this game, however, after renting it I was disappointed to find it so unapplealing. I purchase Nintendo 64 games to play with my friends, and the mutliplayer on this game is very poor. It lacks any decent for of "Battle Mode," which is the selling point for Mario Kart. The graphics, theme and sound are all very cutesy, geared for children, which didn't fly to well with me. That aside the Racing portion of the game is highly interesting. Having the option between driving a plane, hovercraft and car is fun. The adventure seems well done. However, there is nothing that caught my interest for more than 5 minutes. Renting it for 5 days was more than enough play time for me.
Excellent on paper -- not so good in reality

Diddy Kong Racing, simply put, is a game I have tried to love, and simply cannot do it. I have even tried to play it, but I cannot simply stand playing this insipid game. I do now know why, but this simply is not a good game. Perhaps it is particular tastes. But I simply cannot stand this game. The tracts are fairly imaginative. One grating thing about it is say you hit a tree. Well, instead of bouncing off like on many other racing games, you stay bashing into the tree. It does have some interesting features, however. The sheer volume of tracts (had it been any other game would have been a plus) shows ingenuity, the story line is interesting, but in execution the game just flails horribly.
Why do I give it 2 stars? The concept. I love the concept. Making an adventure out of a racing game, and the format they gave it is an excellent idea. The sheer number of tracks is exhilarating. And on some courses there are THREE (plane, hovercraft, kart) types of vehicles to use. It is just a tragedy that in practice it doesn't come off at all. It is nowhere near Super Mario Kart 64. That game is fast-paced and loads of fun, the best racer to hit the N64. Size wise, this dwarves Mario Kart 64. If they could have had the execution on Mario Kart 64 and the concept of Diddy Kong Racing, we would have had one hell of a game. Sadly, such a game does not exist (yet). We have to settle with a badly executed game (Diddy Kong Racing) with another racing game that is superb in all manner of ways. But, with a little engineering, we could have the best of both worlds. Super Mario Kart 64 is the way to go, folks. The multiplayer battle is really fun too, especially Block Fort. Superiour in concept, inferiour in execution. That's the bottom line.

I was so excited when I first rented this game. I read tons of great reviews and thought boy this game has to be great! I was totally disapointed. It's a mario kart clone but not in a good way like CTR. Diddy Kong Racing got it all wrong. Controlling the vehicles is extremley frustrating, espically the planes. The courses are totally kiddish. I found myself getting motion sickness and boredom from this game. I was wondering what all the hype was about. This game is very dissapointing, honestly.
The Mario Kart wanna be only deserves 1 1/2 stars.

I hardly liked this game because it was a wanna be version of Mario Kart 64, which, I thought, was a lot better. This game was hardly fun.
Is it better than Mario Kart?

The first question hovering over Diddy Kong Racing is: is it better than Mario Kart? Well yes and no. Mario Kart was virtually useless for any single player; Diddy Kong has a superb single player mode that will keep you busy for months. However, Diddy Kong is let down by a less successful multi-player mode. It's hard to pinpoint why this is so but all I know is that if I have a few friends around for a game, it is Mario that fits into the console.
Perhaps it is because Mario had more original power-ups. In Diddy Kong, you get different strength speed ups or different strength fire-meters. It is below-par when compared to Mario's lightning, star-boost, turbos, etc. power-ups.
The strength of Diddy-Kong is with its triumphant single-player. Sure, the arguments about its repetitiveness are correct but the courses that you have to repeat are spectacular. You fly, hover, or drive through the courses but the pinnacle of the game comes when you have to face the bosses. They're not easy, but they're not overly difficult. In fact, the game-makers hit got the difficult setting just right.
To be fair, I got sick of the game after I thought I finished only to find myself up in space. I can only take so many anti-climaxes before my interest collapses. Otherwise, though the game did keep me occupied and I was glad that I purchased it. Another winner for Nintendo.

This was my very first Nintendo 64 game. When I first played it, I loved every second of it. I couldn't wait to get to the next level and discover the secrets hidden inside the game. Once I finally got to the first boss (Wizpig), I totally lost, and I did the next time, and the next and so on and so forth. I never did beat him until 3 years later!! But, throughout my time practicing and changing the characters, and using the shortcuts, I found many other ways to entertain myself with the game. It's fun to try out new things, especially with a game like this. There is no time limit, and you get to beat your own scores! But, after awhile, this game can get a bit boring. It's hard, because once you learn the tracks by heart, and know where the perfect shortcuts are, and what character to use, you beat the levels all the time. Although you can challenge yourself to beat the high scores by the computer, you still get bored. Once you finally beat Wizpig the second time, you open up Adventure Two, and it is exactly the same as the first time around, but the tracks are mirror images of the first ones, and the coins are in different places, AND the other racers are almost impossible to beat! It's really hard, and after stressing over it for almost 3 monthes, I still couldn't get passed the first world, and when something like that happens, you get frustrated and then you totally hate the game. So, this game might be best just to rent, because its only racing, you never leave your vehicle, and it can either be too easy, or too hard, but never in between.
