This game gets so old, so fast

I bought this game because it was on sale ... with the expansion. I was fun for a day. Then after that it just makes you mad. The campian is boring, also both the arm and the core are almost identicle. It is to slow. The graphics bring the game down. Plus it's way to easy on multiplayer. The comp. always rush's you with fast attack units. But with one shot from your commander and it is all over. It is hard for me to sit down for ten minutes.

May have been an ok game for then, but doesnt compare now

Total Annihilation is not that great. Sure there are millions of men your army can consist of, but many are very weak and useless. There is really no depth to the game, its just one of those games where whoever can build the best man first wins no contest. Compared to games of today like Starcraft and Homeworld this game stands no chance. I think I was being very generous giving it 2 stars. I wouldnt waste my money.

RTS, 3d, yawn.

At the time it came out, Total Annihilation had one thing going for it that most such games didn't - it was true 3d. These days, all RTS games are 3d, so there's nothing unique about it.

Unlike most RTS games, Total Annihliation doesn't have much of a story, and while you can play as either side, the only difference is the terrein - there are no truly unique unit types or different strategies. I beat the game much more quickly than I did other such games, since there was so little variety that it was easy to out think the AI.

I would buy this game only if you've exhausted every other RTS option. On the other hand, if you enjoyed this game, you will be blown away by the other games in this genre that have come out in the last few years.

Command and Conquer it isn't

This game was made in the command and conquer style. Unfortunately it is overly simplistic. All of the maps are the same size so it is quite easy to determine where your enemy base is located(usually exactly opposite you). The graphics are cool and the gameplay is easy but there is no real plot and the map size really bring it down. The gradations on the map are great though.

don't get it if you have windows 98 or 2000

This is an awesome game if you have windows 95. I got the game when it first came out and it was the best in my collection. But after i upgraded to windows 98 it didn't run anymore. :(

Ok I remember playing this game a long time ago and LOVING it. But after installing the latest patches and giving it another go I have to wonder...WHO decided to make the enemies be able to shoot you from so far away?
Whoever did that and made that decision...ruined the game. I am going to uninstall the patch and play again and see if it changes things because I swear it wasnt like that when I played it the first time around. I will update after trying it sans patch.

Good Game

Man this game is awesome. I've had it for two years so far. The campaigns are good, but skirmish mode is simply the best. I love blowing everything away with my long range cannons, raising a massive air force, and building huge navies. The commander is ultra cool with his D-Gun, which blows away anything in its path. The only complaint is that the AI is really bad in the naval department. It doesn't build mass hordes of ships like it does land units. Skirmish mode is really one of the best in any RTS though. For the low price you really can't go wrong buying this classic. Oh and the music. The music is the best score I have ever heard from any computer game. And believe me I've played many games. It's a great orchestra set that really draws you in. Man I'd pay just so I could play the music in my CD player.

Good game, but sometimes annoying

I have owned this game for several years and decided to buy another copy for a friend.
Strategy is somewhat the most important role, but knowing what to build and what to destroy.
An annoying thing I realized is that sometimes you just can't defeat the other opponent even if you rush in with 150+ aircrafts if vehicles, kbots, or ships cannot do so. There are times when it will seem to be like a tie and I save the game and deal with it later. I'm talking about playing against the comp. btw...Playing against other players is great when you learn more about the game.
There are some overpowered items in this game so I find that if you attack in smaller mobs than come in in a large group you might be able to slow down their building of weapons. When they have the most advanced weapons/robots you can't really beat them and neither can they beat you as you would probably have the top items as well. That's the only problem I really found in this game against the computer.
This is an amazing game and you'll be playing it for hours since it's so much fun. Some weapons are really cool and you basically just own tons of enemies with them. I find ships useful for defense since some have powerful or fast attacks. Vehicles are what I used for to attack in smaller groups. Bombing aircrafts literally wipes out a group while only sacrificing a few of your own robots.
If your into strategy action games, you must own this or at least play it a couple of times. What's more fun than blasting metal while using your brain to defeat them.

Great game, but an old one.

I like this game a lot. The multiplayer, either skirmish or with some friends, is among the best out there. The game allows for many different ways to attack, like ground invasion, missiles, air strikes, artillery fire, or just nuke the enemy bases. Plus, every attack has a defense, so good players can stop just about every attack against them. This can lead to very long matches with no clear cut winners.

The largest flaw with this game is its age. The engine doesn't allow zooming in or out. Most commanding happens through the mini-map, which can take some adjusting. However, a more advanced engine that supports Total Annihilation maps and mods has been released. It's named "TA Spring". I highly recommend that engine as well. Aside from the engine, there were no major flaws to this game. It is one of the best RTS games ever made.

Spectacular

_This is simply the BEST RTS I have ever seen, heard of, or played. It's incredibly fun, there are quite a few ingenious units, the play is exciting and you really do need strategic skills to win, and the replay value is 100% without a doubt. I simply cannot imagine a funner game...except...
_There are a few things bad about this game. Let's start with the original version. Big problem: The enemies always know exactly where you and your units are. The radar jammers and stealth units are meaningless. Another problem is the movement engine. Units move diagonally until they're aligned with the closest line of imaginary grid...then they proceed down that line until they're right next to their destination, where they move diagonally again to finally reach it. They don't actually move in a straight line to their objective. Next, the missile silos built by the AI units just sit there. They don't build missiles and they really don't fire them. Next, the enemy places it's resource collectors in random spots quite often, which is very annoying. Plus, some units it just refuses to build, in any version of the game.
_Now for the problems with the upgraded game versions. The incredibly useful game info bar (shows how many units you've build and the maximum, and what the game speed is), just fails to appear sometimes. Some important things that USED to be reported in the in-game text dialoge just stop showing up there. And the worst one of them all...savegame files get randomly currupted. You'll try to load it, and it'll shut down the game. Oh well, sorry, all that work for nothing. If it weren't for THAT problem (and the problem that the enemy always knows where you are...but there are cheats around that), this game would get a full 5 stars. I really wanted to give it full marks, but when I can't play most of my savegames...it has to be taken down a star.
