This game excels in the ability to simulate a massive war. When I play with my friend, it gives me that same feel of crashing cars together when I was young. The lighting and smoke effects are amazing, especially for a game so old. Seeing the volleys of plasma blasts and rockets makes me smile with glee. Hitting a unit hard enough to make it fragment is amazing. Pieces of the unit go flying off. Units leave wreckage which impede movement and block shots. Wreckage is 3D rendered too, and has height. Ships will sink to the bottom of the water, waiting to be reused, by reclaiming it with a construction robot. With patches, you can build a ship yard in lava, which slowly damages your ships.
Terrain is 3D. Beware of hills. That BFC that you just built can't always lob a shot over the hills. Makes me want to pull out my trig book so I can calculate where to put it to fire over the hills and walls. Also, those trees are pretty, but they have several uses. They can absorb one plasma blast, or catch fire by lasers, missiles, flamethrowers, or rockets, damaging units that are too close. The forest fire moves with the wind on the map. They can also be used as a cheap source of energy, by reclaiming them.
Units tilt when going up hills, and wobble when hit by enemy fire, and rock when returning fire. My favourite is watching the battleship fire its long range cannons in a salvo fire, and then rocking a bit in the water. The turrets are amazing. The battleship has two independant turrets that can fire at two enemies at once! The Dooms Day can fire at three units at once. Several units have multiple weapons to deal with different foes.
I'd write more, but all this ranting and raving makes me want to go play it now. ...

I just wrote a full review but missed something. The score, the music is the finest in all of gaming. Absolutely fantastic with beautiful yet intense movements which really add to your total game playing experience. I even listen to mine on my CD player it's that good!

This game is amazing, after however many years this game still gets me to play it for at least 3 hours at a time. Hundreds of maps and units to download off the internet, maps that can be over 63 screens across by 63 screens down, and your units can attack from land sea or air. The only problem is the multi-player against the AI are often too easy, and they don't usually build the most appropriate units (50 land units on an island?). The building your own maps and units is very nice, but are hard to make.
I think this game and its expansions are must must-haves!
Buy this if you have at least an hour to play a game!!!!!

I have been playing this game (single player mode) for 3 years now. It is the 2nd best game I have ever played (Deus Ex is the best), and the best stratagy game I have ever played. The graphics are great, and the sound is truely awesome (though some sounds can get monotonous if you have all sounds enabled). The narration at the beginning of each mission is as awesome as it would be if the man who played Darth Vader did it. It is very addictive gameplay which will perhaps give 100 hours or more of addictive fun. It was very hard for me at first, but after a week or more I became very good at it on "Hard" skill.
Use the speed settings hot keys to slow down the game, or you will not be able to handle the commands fast enough. Be very careful with your "commander". Use the orders to set the proper stance for each unit: "Roam", "maneuver", or "Hold position; "Fire at will", "return fire", or "Hold Fire". Set the settings at the factory to automatically churn out new units with the proper stance already set. Assign "Patrols" to units: they will patrol back and forth (or around) exactly as you want them to automatically.
If you do not have the patience to spend hours building up a base for a single mission (fighting off raids at the same time), then you should NOT buy this game. However, if you do, this game will reward you with an awesome battle with the opposing side. The AI is awesome. The only fault is in the missions on the planet with the occasional "meteor showers" and the other planet with the "ice storms": occasionally the showers will awaken enemy units prematurely ("scripted" events), causing them to attack you when you can not survive such a powerful attack without becoming too weak. In this case, replay the mission from the beginning. It will probably play out differently then. When things get hectic, pause the game to give orders.
This game is so fun, I CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH FUN THIS RTS GAME IS!!!!! Also, the Core Contingincy add-on is awesome too.

Simply put, and without a doubt, this is *THE BEST* RTS game you could ever hope to spend your money on. This game was originally released in the late 90's, but leaves every game released since LACKING. That's right, every single RTS out right now can't hold a candle to the replayability of this jewel. That is a bold statement if you consider that this game was released over 6 years ago. The original Playstation was only released 2 years prior. I have played lots of games over the years - EverQuest, Quake, StarCraft, WarCraft, Diablo, Command and Conquer, and more - but always come back to this one because it is still the only one that provides the playability and fun that I look for.
I'm not certain if the original expansion units and maps are available on this cd, but luckily for you there is a plethora of fan sites still active today that carry every type of map and unit you could hope to have. You would actually be doing yourself a disservice by only playing with the stock install of the game. My personal suggestion is the Total Annihilation Units Compilation Pack by Malcolm Lim (Google search it).
Buy this game. You won't regret it.

This game was made in the command and conquer style. Unfortunately it is overly simplistic. All of the maps are the same size so it is quite easy to determine where your enemy base is located(usually exactly opposite you). The graphics are cool and the gameplay is easy but there is no real plot and the map size really bring it down. The gradations on the map are great though.
don't get it if you have windows 98 or 2000

You can also download units and add them to the game and use them in multiplayer wich changes the stratagy used by most people 10 fold.
