Great game, but an old one.

I like this game a lot. The multiplayer, either skirmish or with some friends, is among the best out there. The game allows for many different ways to attack, like ground invasion, missiles, air strikes, artillery fire, or just nuke the enemy bases. Plus, every attack has a defense, so good players can stop just about every attack against them. This can lead to very long matches with no clear cut winners.

The largest flaw with this game is its age. The engine doesn't allow zooming in or out. Most commanding happens through the mini-map, which can take some adjusting. However, a more advanced engine that supports Total Annihilation maps and mods has been released. It's named "TA Spring". I highly recommend that engine as well. Aside from the engine, there were no major flaws to this game. It is one of the best RTS games ever made.

Ok I remember playing this game a long time ago and LOVING it. But after installing the latest patches and giving it another go I have to wonder...WHO decided to make the enemies be able to shoot you from so far away?
Whoever did that and made that decision...ruined the game. I am going to uninstall the patch and play again and see if it changes things because I swear it wasnt like that when I played it the first time around. I will update after trying it sans patch.

This game is awesome, but the AI and balance could be better

If you get this game, I really suggest searching on the Internet to find user supplied maps and units. Some of them are really good. I also suggest getting TA: Core Contingency and the Battle Tactics is not bad (look for the Commander Pack that has them both).

Anyway, you control either Arm or Core forces. Although the units for each are very similar, the details are different. The particular strengths of each unit is different. You control mechs (kbots), vehicles like rovers and tanks, gun emplacements like rocket towers, lasers, and a variety of huge cannons. You can also make planes, hovercraft (with the right extras), boats, and submarines. The models are all rendered in 3d and they look really cool. The basic game has maybe 150 units and with the downloaded units and the expansion packs it is over 300. There are lots of great maps to choose from -- you can have a battle in a crumbling city, mountains, between islands, at sea, in a lavascape, or many other exotic locations.

The game balance is a bit iffy. When playing multi player, we had to put limits on the types of units that could be built. Some of the long range cannons and assault aircraft were too powerful. But multiplayer is really a blast!

The computer AI is not too hot, once you become familiar with the game. In the single player missions, the pieces and scripts seem like they do a pretty good job, but in single player skirmishes, the AI really does a poor job.

My overall assement is this game ROCKS!

I've played RTS games, including Blizzard's Warcraft and Starcraft games. But for some reason, this is the one that keeps pulling me in. I've sold off my Blizzard collection, but I have two copies of this. Why?

Because this is a hell of a lot of fun.

I have yet to find a RTS game that allows land, naval, and air battles all at the same time. In fact, the naval parts of this game are my absolute favorites. There's nothing quite like the feeling of shelling a beach that you can't even see yet, then moving in closer and finding the twisted rubble of your enemy's forces, or the satisfaction of sneaking up on an enemy battle group with a couple of submarines.

Add to that a dedicated mod community that is still putting out maps and mods and new units to complement the 100 or so units the game ships with, and you've got something really special.

Also, the review would be incomplete without mentioning the incredible musical score, that changes according to the situation. There are times when sending in a flight of gunships calls up a roaring score, and I feel like I'm watching the Ride of the Valkyries scene from Apocalypse Now. While the graphics are a little dated, the score is awesome.

Sure, there are flashier, prettier RTS games out there. But more fun? Not for my money.

I bought this RTS 4 years ago, and it is the only one that I still play. There was a very active mod community that still has downloads and tutorials available, the game released its own mapmaking utility (same used to make the game), and lots of free downloads: (...)

This is the BEST RTS, and it was the first to use 3D with realistic physics. Buy it!

I have played many games of this genere, including starcraft, all the redalert games, dark reign, galatic battle grounds, panzer general, warloards battlecry, and countless others. Yes, all those games were good, but none have had more of a "fun factor" as this game has. With a large selection of units, including sumerseibles, boats, air units, infantry, and tanks, this game sports imense replay value. This game was the first game I have ever seen use the super weapons, as well as the only game that provides ways to defend against them. Rather then garbage base defenses as were in starcraft, base defense, such as the punisher and the "big bertha" shoot farther distances then the mobile units can giving a purpose to actually building a defense. I highly reccommend this game, it did not recieve the recignition it deserved, but I still enjoy this game above all other for its amazing replay value and well thought out structure.

This is one of the best games I've ever played. All the buildings/characters are unique which makes for great gameplay. The special effects, like explosions, guns, missiles etc. are also outstanding. I like the way the game is set up, it is easy to get around/learn to play. If you are interested in buying, or like stagety games this is a must-have.

I played this game for 3 years and still pick it up from time to time. There has never been a better RTS game, and the way the gaming industry is going, I doubt there ever will be.
