Absolutely Dreadful

This game is an embarrassment to the Star Wars license and MMO's. It is a hodgepodge of several failed overhauls stacked on top of each other where nothing really works like it is supposed to. The graphics are dated, the community is terrible, there is nothing to do, the quests are dreadful and if you get past all of that somehow you will discover the Star Wars universe itself isn't even replicated correctly. The time setting is stated to be between the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back yet you can't swing a dead bantha without hitting 50 Jedi in robes talking like teenage punks and challenging you to duel.
The people who post that this game is fun are either viral marketers hired by Sony to spam boards with fake reviews, employees of the company who will lose their job when its finally shut down or delusional fans who refuse to accept that this game is terrible because of some kind of vested interest. This game is an utter joke and if you want a decent Star Wars experience I would instead encourage you to check out Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2), Empire at War or even Lego Star Wars instead of this piece of garbage. For that matter I would recommend buying a DVD of one of the movies and watching it a few times before I would recommend playing this game. You have been warned. May the Force be With You and guide your dollars elsewhere.

I have been playing SWG since 2 months after launch. I endured the CURB and went through the typical player tantrum after the NGE.........and now I am back playing SWG full time.
I have tried just about every single MMO out there and Beta Tested a few not yet out. SWG still has the most immersive environment for the rounded player. No other game comes close to the complexity and interest level in the field of crafting. (I know crafting has taken some hits but the new BeastMastery Bio-Engineering is going to rock the economies and help push crafting back to what it once was.)
The Developers are constantly improving the game in two ways. 1, they are slowly adding old features back to the game, just compatible with the NGE. 2, they are adding new concepts to the game to make it more fun for all players. Both the Rebel and Imperial Themeparks are slated to get upgrades in the next few months.
Most of the negaitve reviews written about SWG are those by players upset that someone moved their cheese. They will claim that the PreNGE SWG was the Grail of MMO's but their posts on the SWG Forums prior to the NGE never reflected that sentiment. The EULA states that a game may change at anytime and Sony certainly lived up to that clause.
If you want an MMO that will draw you in and allow you to have a virtual second life in a Star Wars setting, SWG is the MMO for you. If you are seeking the Grail of MMO's, you won't find it here or anywhere else.
Back on track and worth another try

I've been playing this game since 2004. In that time the actual entire game-play mechanic has changed twice. The second time was the NGE (New Game Enhancement) which virtual destroyed the game and lost over half of the existing player base for Sony. But things are much better now.
In the last year or so this game has evolved into a state that is surprisingly similar to the original game. Although not a thorough sandbox layout, and still having only 7 combat and 4 crafting professions now, with the expertise system currently in place the game offers a good deal of flexibility for your character.
Most of the people that made the desasterous decisions that nearly ruined the game in the past are gone and the current development and production teams are agressively motivated to improving the game on a constant basis. For a year now SOE/LA have been dedicated to game restoration; in stead of developing a new expansion to increase revenue they release new (and very good) in-game content at least every other month. On top of that they are constantly updating old content and fixing bugs, some of which have been in the game since very near launch. They are definitely trying to keep their customers happy, asking for and listening to the players' opinions and making adjustments based on their inputs.
Here are just some examples of the things they have done to improve gameplay and make this game worth playing now:
- Character expertise system, giving you options individualize your character
- Beast Master expertise, the rebirth of the loved and lost Creature Handler profession from the original game. Giving players the option to keep and train pets to use in combat.
- Revamp of Imperial and Rebel theme parks, giving more challenge and enjoyable content.
- Improved the Galactic Civil War system, giving rewards for Player-versus-Player combat including rank advancement, exclusive skills and exclusive weapons and vehilcles
- New Quest content, including instanced dungeons and quest lines with new (and useful) rewards. New quest content is added every 2-3 months as part of your normal subscription.
- Return of (and improvement to) the entertainer buffing system. Long term high benefit buffs for all professions available from entertainer player characters.
- Collection system offering rewards from badges and character titles to unique items.
With all that, I'm glad that I stuck with the game all this time. I really think it is worthwhile for a former player to give it another try and I think it would be very enjoyable for any new player.

After purchasing this latest offering for SWG I thought I would write, seeing how this has become like a thread in a forum :)
I have been playing SWG off and on throughout the various stages and have been keeping up with all the rants, threats and praises for the game. I remember pre-cu a number of players were petitioning to have the game updated and changed, grant it not drastically but nevertheless changed, ranged from unbalance issues, too sophisticated for new players, to hologrinding isn't the way of the jedi....blah blah blah. Change begins to happen and the community is in uproar...gotta love it...fickle.
Now the changes that have happened since are drastic. Yes I am also aware of the seemingly apparent bait and switch Sony did to us...I am undecided on that one but either way SWG is still a very fun game if...
If you like what no other MMO has at the moment a decent crafting system and loot display (emphasis more on the later.) I understand that these are reasons most leave an MMO lol but at least someone hasn't buckled to the "let us shove the content down your throat...we will create the stories for you" type of MMO. SWG remains a very open game while still being quest driven. And mentioning above collecting loot and displaying it in your home is one of thee coolest things SWG has going for it...In WoW, another favorite MMO of mine, your stuck with 2D icons that sit in a 2D sack or bank. Oh you can display your loot to others through a hyper link =( In SWG hanging rare paintings on the walls of your home of Vader or rare rugs for display is what drives us loot seekers and there is nothing a free as SWG loot/display system at the moment.
Anyway...I still play because of these remaining factors - sophisticated crafting system (in comparison to point and click crafting systems, loot display and collecting, and creating self-content.
If you like Star Wars, crafting and looting and being a pack rat this is the game for you...hands down.
*Disclaimer: spare me the hate comments I've read the rant and hate on the SWG forums for years. I've been in the community through the ups and downs and on both sides of the anti-Sony fence and know all the regurgitated arguments.

I like many others have been playing this game for over 4 years and yes I like many did alot of crying about the NGE. When the NGE hit, this game sucked really bad ....I mean it got a 1 on every single mag or review written. But now I can honestly say that they have fixed alot and even though the buffs you can get from medics and entertainers kind of make PVP suck alittle..... the fact is non of us can stop playing. They have recently brought back the Village and if you are a Jedi you can even pick your own skills, making the character yours.... it brings back the the feature from pre NGE. I have an elder Jedi and had to unlock it from the old which was alot of work and grinding... but I recently made a Medic which I play now and i have alot of fun doing it. So take it from 4 year vet who was pissed with the change..... they have fixed alot of this and the game is a blast again.
An honest review from someone who used to love SWG

I quit playing SWG right before the NGE was introduced, mainly because I was sick of paying the money for my subscription and the game had gotten boring and I never played it anymore.
Since then I've heard alot of yipe about this game and decided to try the 14-day free trial (which is the same thing as if you were to buy the game with all the up to date add ons). Within one day of playing I completely lost interest in it. Whatever SWG "used to be" has long since been replaced by a shell of the game that appears to have more bugs than release date. The frame rates have also taken a beating. It really seems like todays SWG has been completely ruined by a slightly revamped PvP system, although a buggy one.
I used to be an artisan in pre-NGE. I loved it because I was able to focus 80% of my time on stats for Master Artisan and 20% working on Marksman (so I could defend myself). Now the game makes you choose what you HAVE to do the entire game. What a joke, it doesnt even list rifle/pistol/carbine attack stats like it did for pre-NGE so no matter how much you kill you will never gain any "fighting skills".
The servers are very empty, I remember when the cantina's would be over flowing with players. Now there is hardly an audience. If you want a new MMORPG wait for Pirates of the Buring Sea. That will be an awesome game.
Its what you make of it

I use to play the game back when it first came out and spent countless hours playing it. Cant say I ever had anything bad to say about the game since I had a blast with it. Due to a change in jobs I didnt have the time anymore to play it, so I quit in 2004.
I recently returned to the game and I still find myself spending countless hours playing this game so its all in what you make of the game. I very much like the new feature which lets you pilot a starship as well as the new profession expertise.
No, there is not the same amount of players as there use to be (although that is starting to change) and rarely do you see anyone wanting to start a group (which is due to the current Xp point system and groups, but is supposedly being revamped). The current system and group XP points is why i didnt give the game 5 stars However I still find the game fun and I still enjoy playing.
Everyone has their own opinion of the game and you know the old cliche about opinions so download the 14 day free trial and judge the game for yourself.

Huge improvement to the way the old SWG played. The game is fun playing solo, but if you want the most out of your SWG experience, get a friend to join you. The game is more complex than other MMO's, but you don't have to be a big Star Wars fan to enjoy it. Adding all of the expansions in one box was a great idea, especially at such a low price. You can't beat it.
Time to re-think my anger against SOE and SWG?

Ok, I have been one of the most vocal critics of SOE and the game, I was hurt by the changes to jedi and crafters which have been well documented, however I recently returned to see the changes and I must admit I am really enjoying myself. My decision to return was triggered by FLS deciding to go with SOE to market Pirates of the Burning Sea. After my initial disgust, I decided I needed to put the past in the past and look at the situation again. I have been back a few weeks and am really having a good time. More players online than I would have imagined. I am enjoying the pve and pvp aspects...my trader is actually selling armor and weapons. I urge my friends that have sworn off the game and the company as I did to give it another look, you may like what you see, you may not...I am enjoying it
Not great, but not horrible. Make your own decision

I've been playing for over three years. If you are interested in the game then I'd encourage you to get the free trial from Sony Online first and try it out yourself.
The opinions of long time players should be taken with a grain of salt. Theres a number of disgruntled people with a bone to pick. The game had a major change about 1 year ago and a lot of people are very disgruntled about that and many of them are flagging it as 1 star because its not what it used to be. What the game was like 2 years ago is not relevant to someone buying it today. I don't mean to say these people don't have warranted complaints. Sony Online has made a lot of blunders in their running of the game and if you play long enough you'll probably end up mad at them about something. But hey, its just a video game. If you play it and like it then cool and if you don't like it then ya quit.
PROS:
Its Star Wars. Nuff said.
Play on both ground and space.
Large worlds with tons of content.
Non-combat options for crafting and entertainers.
Still one of the more elaborate crafting systems and player driven economies compared to most MMOs.
CONS:
Sony Online mismanagement. 'revamping' things to change it usually for the worse for no good reason.
Poor to fair customer support.
Economy can be groosly inflated.
Low server population.
Ranting disgruntled veteran players.
