Great initial appeal - Fades when you start to learn the game.

If you're like me, you enjoy a great MMO, and when it's based on something you're familiar with (be it via literature or media), it makes the appeal and the overall experience that much better. Unfortunately, that's all this MMO has going for itself.

The people at SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) did a swell job with the creation of the battle system and character creation/evolution system. It is unseen in any other MMO as it is seen in Star Wars: Galaxies. There are combat professions and non-combat professions. Those non-combat professions being Trader and Entertainer. These professions are the bread and butter of the economy in SWG. Traders flood the marketplace with anything from ship components to animal DNA, while Entertainers flood the cantinas offering wayward travelers uplifting melodies. Your combative choices are Smuggler, Spy, Bounty Hunter, Officer, Commando, and of course, Jedi.

If you're a big Star Wars fan, this may sound like the ideal MMO for you, and that may be fact. However, if you're a casual Star Wars fan, chances are that just because you like Star Wars and MMO's, doesn't mean you'll enjoy SWG. There are many beefs with SWG that many people share.

First, SOE's customer support is moot, at best. When speaking with a GM (an in-game support representative), you're lucky if you're able to read thru their elementary usage of the English language. "u r havnig difucultis with beign stcuk in mid/air? hwo may i hlep?" That is a true, non-exaggerated example of a response I got from a GM the first time I used the system. You are not treated with concern - more of a nuisance.

Second, SWG is old. Plain and simple. With age, comes glitches. With glitches, come repairs. Not in this case. SOE has yet to fix many glitches that have been present since pre-beta.

Third, the battle system. Yes, I said they did a great job with it, but only because it is unique and easy to use. However, it is also boring and unappealing to the eyes. Bounty Hunters have about the most animated combative style, and it still looks like a NERF gun shooting squishy balls.

Fourth, animation. Horrible. Like I said, the game is old. And also like I said, SOE has failed to repair glitches in the game, or simply disregard them as glitches. For example - in combat, NPCs will run toward or away from you and stop, with their feet/legs still moving, or their feet/legs will be moving faster than they are actually going. Also, if you attack an NPC from behind, they will pull an exorcist-esque move and twist around at the waist to retaliate. Also, the landscaping and cityscaping are horrible. Blocky, sometimes pixellated, and often boring. Nothing like the movies. Nothing like they should be.

The initial appeal of being a saber-wielding Jedi or a strapped Bounty Hunter flying around on a jet pack, soon wears off when you begin to discover the complexities of the gaming system.

Star Wars: Galaxies is a very fouled up version of Star Wars. It is almost along the lines of the amateur films and the third party literature that are still in production.

As far as MMOs, this is an absolute failure. It may have been good a few years ago, but not any longer. With the likes of World of Warcraft, the upcoming Age of Conan, and (my personal favourite) Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars: Galaxies is well on its way to the archives of long-lived, long-despised MMOs.

Is the force still there ?

Ok long time ago this game did have alot more classes to play such as creature handler and bio-enginer . The game at that time was verry good with some really decent looking graphics . The control system at that time was verry good hardly any problems at all . The sound in the game it self not to bad with the star-wars based sounds and music . The player base also at that time was verry good with a few minor problems like most online games see .
Since it's release long ago SWG has gone under some changes to the game . Still being early in life some patches was to correct class problems or other . Then as the game keeped on growing more changes started to show up and slowly SWG changed from what it was at first to something you dont wanna play if you recall what it was like when it was released far as classes goes. Jedi when the game was first released you had to basicly mastered all the other classes before getting jedi . Currently you can get to be jedi out of the box due to all the recent changes done to SWG.
There are player's who judge SWG on what it was like in the past and many dont like it in the current form. Also there are many new players comming seeing SWG in it's current status and like it .
If you enjoy space battels in ships this might be for you or if you just wanted to play a jedi could be your game .

The key to my review is not to stay away from the game but to judge for your self to see if SWG is the game for you to pay for every month and play !

BUYER BEWARE - Do not try trial if you want 30 days

First: I like this game. I never played the old game, but that is the old game and not the NOW game people would be buying.

BUYER BEWARE:

If you want to try out the Free Trial FIRST before buying this, and find out that you like the game and wish to buy it and thus use the "30 days subscription fees included" with the game, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED!

SOE is ripping off buyers who have tried the trial. They will not allow you to use the code from the box and get the 30 days due to you as a result of purchasing the boxed product.

That is a raw deal. One they are doing wrongly. If you buy the boxed version, you should get your 30 days that come with it, regardless if you tried the trial or not.

This fraud has already been reported to the BBB and taken to a class action lawyer, so maybe this wrongful activity by SOE will be resolved. However until news of that comes about, just be aware of what you are buying.

I don't know what these guys are so mad about! This game has it all!

First off you know that the developers of this game love their player

base because they constantly give us what we want! They love us soo much

that when they see that your spending too much time playing and not

spending time with your family they respond lightning fast.

Developer: "Bill, theres almost 100,000 people enjoying the game because

it's so unique and immersive. looking at these numbers, players average 6

hours a day logged in. Quick! change it comepletly make it like a console

game! click click click attack, its perfect!."

All those other MMO's out there that never succeeded in anything like

Everquest 1 never changed the entire gameing system. See what happened

that game! Nobody played it. So this game is for you. Believe me it's the

challenge of a game that makes it great. In Star wars galaxies you will

be challenged to pick a profession and grind away for hours on end and

then a month or two later you can start all over again because the

developers will change the whole thing. Thats awsome, its like getting a

whole new game for just your $15 bucks a month! Sweet!

For some reason all my friends I used to play with have all left the

game and at first it made me sad and lonely. But then I realized that

once more Sony was watching out for me! I have the game all to my self

almost! WOW its like being in an amusement park with no one in it but

you! You can travel the entire lenght of this gorgeous landscape for

hours and sometimes you might not encounter another soul! Score! I travel

to Tatooine and day dream about the past with Jedi and Riflemen and

dozens of other unique and diverse players would hunt Krayt dragons.

Their all gone now but whats that got to do with game play? I think Sony

agrees with me. Nothing at all.

Don't worry about being bothred by whiny negative people in this game

either it's awsome. As soon as anyone has the nerve to bother you and

complain (im really again not sure what they are whining about exactly) a

player ingame or on the forums will tell them to shut up and quit playing

the game! The community in this game simply couldn't get any better! So

what are you waiting for! Buy this Game now!

Don't be put off by the bitter hard-core MMORPG'ers

I don't normally write amazon reviews, but SWG is being dealt an unfair hand. What the folks writing these surly reviews are telling you is that they are upset that an insanely sophisticated environment rigged to allow gamers-for-life to be top dog (the old SWG) is fading away and being replaced by something that balances the questing and group play of a classic MMORPG with a greatly-enhanced UI that makes gamimng easier, more relaxing, and less prone to exploits. Basically, they all took their toys and went home.

Sony probably SHOULD have done more for these stalwarts then they did to help them maintain their game self-esteem through the transition, but as a player for 16 months I am more than satisfied with the progress Sony and LucasArts are making towards a more balanced game that is totally immersive in the Star Wars.

On the plus side, the game features insanely good animation without the need for a $5000 monster game machine, a beautifully drawn-from-the films soundtrack, and some pretty clear paths for developing your character.

I do agree with some others that the appealing community aspects of many MMORPG's are weakened by the exodus of the old guard, but I suspect the cure is a simple merging of some of the game's many "galaxies" (server groups) rather than a total removal of the plug.

Recently, I have noticed players "coming back" from other games as sytems for PVP and various character classes are improved.

As a father of two sons who also play, I expect to maintain a long term committment to this game. It is relatively free of the gothic overtones which infect so many other entries in this genre, and with a few noted exceptions the online community that plays it is a pretty good bunch of folks.

I hope Sony and LucasArts will keep working on it. As a fan of the Star Wars universe since Episode 4 in 1977, it is the one remaining vehicle for keeping the Star Wars magic alive now that Lucas has declared the end of the film series.

(Note: new players, please join the Ahazi or Bria server because those 2 servers have the most people on them)

-This game is midly fun.This game pack includes the original game, Jump to light speed, the wookiee homeworld expansion, and Mustafar(very fun quests on mustafar)

-You get to pick from 9 professions and receive pilot as a free profession.

-There is 10+ planets to explore not including the expansion planets.

-They have added a new way to "grind" your character on the ground using the new legacy quests(but the legacy quests have a very tedious feeling to them though, because you do repetive tasks.)

-The ground game is a little buggy, and you only get an average of 20 fps on a decent computer.

-Space is very fun,not buggy at all(but is an aquired taste for most people), and is much much much more complex than the ground game ATM.
-You can use tie fighters, x wings, and even Yt-1300's(han solo's ship), and much much more
-You level pilot by doing missions in space, and the final mission is to blow up a corellian corvette in Kessel space.(requires large group)

In conclusion, I Would say try out the game especially if you like wow...because SOE borrows alot of ideas from world of warcraft for the ground part of the game.

SWG is still a good game

I joined the game back in 2004, and it was great, but I didn't like the NGE (New Game Enhancement) too much, So I quit in early 2006. But I decided to give it one more try, and I love it! I realized that it's not the game I had before, this is a new game and a great one! There are still some bugs in the game, but patches are commonly coming out. There are a lot of veterans of the old game that really don't like the NGE, so they give it a 1 star. They don't understand, SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) made a good move, now it's easier to make more content/patches/expansions to make it a even better game!

SWG is getting much better

Gone are the dark times of the NGE or New Game Enhancements. The game is very close to the initial CU (Combat Upgrade) level of play again.

The new player tutorial is very well done as are the initial Legacy Quests to get up to around level 50. Profession Expertise is now out for all professions and the new pvp areas of Restuss and the Galactic Civil War bases are a nice addition.

Don't be discouraged by all the negative reviews from bitter vets. This game is very good. Player housing, cities, and a very robust crafting system are still better than any other MMO out here. Not to mention the Space part which is also very fun.

I found the game to be a heck of a lot of fun and a truely immersive Star Wars experience. SOE have been consistently working to improve the game and add new content.

Take the role of one of nine iconic Star War's professions, and explore over 12 different planets. Immerse yourself in a deep crafting system, that amongst other things lets you design your own spacecraft. Pilot spacecraft and fight against the Rebellon, the Empire, or pirates in space and land. Use the new expertise system to customise your character. Spend time questing, hunting or engaging in PvP. The choice is yours.

The best thing, you can bypass all these reviews both negative and positive and make up your own mind by downloading the free trail and playing the game yourself.

Its not as bead as you hear

Where many people say that this game is horrible and that Lucas Arts is just trying to suck money out of your wallet, I don't see it that way. I have been playing this for many years over the various updates it has gone through and it just seems more and more fun. There seem to be more people actively playing it as well. Don't go on what people tell you, play the trial and see for yourself.
