Remember in Charlie Brown ...

... when Lucy would yank the football away just as Charlie Brown was finally going to have that fun moment, and he ended up flat on his back yelling "Aaaauughh!"

That's how SWG has been operated for 2 years. If you buy their latest shiny box put on the shelves to squeeze a few dimes out of unsuspecting Star Wars fans, you are signing up for the Charlie Brown role, just waiting for the next 'inspiration' this team has to undermine whatever time you put into developing an MMO character. As others have pointed out, this isn't an MMO any more anyway, because 'Massive' requires far more players than are left in the ghost towns of Galaxies.

What was once a game full of potential has been limping along on minimum life support since the disastrous "New Game Experience" gutted most of the game's complexity. It's a mish-mash of 2 or 3 different game design philosiphies imposed by successors to the original design team (now long gone), and the pieces don't fit together at all.

Save your money. Hard to imagine this FUBAR project will survive much longer anyway.

Ever wonder why this game is re-released every 3 - 6 months?

Star Wars Galaxies has been repackaged and resold several times since it came out in 2002/2003. The first "re-release" came about about the time of Episode 3. About 6 months later, the game was re-released as the "NGE" i.e. "New Game Experience". After upsetting its player base to the point of a mass exodus to other games such as World of Warcraft, EvE Online, and others - SOE redesigned the game *AGAIN* and has re-released it in this "Complete Adventures" set. About six months ago it was the "Starter Kit". And in about another month it will be released *AGAIN* as part of the "Best of Star Wars" gift set.

This game is in perpetual Alpha/Beta state depending on how much code they delete between patches. It is not fun at all anymore. I made a lot of friends through the original SWG - but they have been milking the Star Wars license for all its worth to comedic dramatic effect - culminating in embarrassing gaffes on the Game Channel "Attack of the Show" as well as CBS Specials detailing some of the atrocities committed by SOE - and also written articles and a "mailbag" special.

Most of the players who had any sort of self-repsect whatsoever left a long time ago.

The only people playing this game right now can be equated to the women who go back to their abusive husbands because he promises not to beat them again.

It is only a matter of time before you have to tell your parents that you "Fell down the stairs" the next time you beat your head into your computer desk after SOE pulls the rug out from under you with a new "Star Warsy" "enhancement" that negates most of your time spent with your character in-game.

Things have gotten so bad with the server population that SOE has given all characters an extra character slot per server... something that used to be reserved for players which earned certain rewards in-game.

You can be a Jedi out of the box... but your powers are so ridiculously weak, and your lightsaber so flaccid that you will lose fights to the most ridiculous creatures... cavemen, correllian butterflies, and all sorts of other "dangerous" beasts.

If you have any self-respect whatsoever - don't even try this game. I can honestly and 100% say that I would not play this game if they paid *me* twice the monthly fee you have to pay them... it is that horrible.

The most customer abusive company in online history

You know why a reviewer below asked new players to make characters on Bria or Ahazi? Because the game is DEAD, and those are the only two servers where you will find people playing. Why is it dead? Because it SUCKS.

I stayed with this game after the very rough bug laden release because it was Star Wars, and I had trust that SOE would fix the problems and give us all the game we desired. Do you know what I got for my hard earned in-game achievements and trust in this company? A slap in the face. I got a robe and a crystal for thousands of hours of work that was wiped away when the NGE was implemented.

If you don't believe me, spend a little time on Google. Here is an entry from Wikipedia.

"There has been a great amount of controversy on the forums from players claiming that they are paying to play for the game whose quality could be compared to that of a game in beta testing. John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment gave this response on the game's game play discussion forum:

"...my preference is that all the posts in the gameplay forum are discussing gameplay balance.. and in-game issues.. but they won't until we get the game to a baseline fun level. We're not there yet. We know that. We're working to fix it. There is no other answer." [5] "

There is the president of SOE himself saying this subscription based game is NOT fun. I would take it from him and play ANYTHING else (well except maybe Dark and Light, but thats another review).

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided

*Sigh* Where to begin...

This game could be better named:
"Star Wars Galaxies: A Development Team Vs. A Player base".

Never in all my life, have I seen a company alienate so many people in pursuit of the almighty dollar. It's truly sickening. I WAS a 20-month veteran of the game, I had been playing since week one.

PLEASE, READ ON...

In the beginning...
This game was alright; it was fun, it was unique, and it was totally bug-ridden and unbalanced. Over the course of the last 20 months, the SOE Dev team have made us promise after promise to do certain things to fix and enhance this game. They in fact did very little, if anything at all. They milked us. They exploited the "Star Wars" name to make a buck. They made promise after promise after promise... and never delivered squat. Don't believe me? Just ask any "Smuggler" in the game for their opinion.

They strung us along and led us to believe that the "fixes" to the game were right around the corner! Instead, they were hard at work on an "Expansion Pack" to sell us! And then once again "promised us" that the fixes we've all been waiting for were the next big thing waiting for us, "just hang on, this game is going to be great!" They promised us that they were going to do this "Combat Upgrade" and do it right, and it "wouldn't be released until it's ready!"

We all had a lot of hope, we thought that they had finally figure out that they had totally screwed up and were trying to make amends with a player base on the brink of total collapse. God, how wrong we all were...

Well, much to everyone's surprise, they made the announcement that the long awaited "CU" would be coming out along with the "Rage of the Wookiees" expansion pack! Uhhhmmm... did I miss something somewhere? The alpha test for the "CU" was supposed to begin in January, it never happened. Beta testing began in April, 4 whole weeks before it was supposed to go to live! We all rolled up our sleeves and dove in. I think after the first week or so, the sad realization of what was happening to our game begun to sink in...

The CU was supposed to go live on May 5th. SOE decided to push it to live a whole 2 weeks sooner than that. Honestly, with all the bugs that were still in beta, and then in live, beta could have gone on another 4-6 months! I guess they figured they could milk us all a little more and dump this beta on the live servers and let us pay to test it. Why am I not surprised?

The CU itself is unplayable. It has become Everquest in space, or "EverStar Galaxies QuestWars" as we call it. There are just too many things to list. There are a lot of other more technical reviews which go into much more detail over on the page for the stand-alone game.

As you all can imagine, the player community was totally enraged! We went to the SWG Forum boards to voice our concerns. The only response we ever got back from SOE was THOUSANDS of deleted threads and players banned from the forums (I was one of them). Facing futility, a large portion of the player base has left the game, permanently this time.

Then 6 whole months later, after they finally figured out that the CU did indeed suck, they let loose the NGE. They released it just two days after releasing the Obi-Wan expansion which had "special items" for classes that were about to disappear. 32 professions reduced to 9. The NGE is the final nails in the coffin of this game. It totally destroyed it. It became some sort of a twisted MMO/FPS wannabe. Fake and cartoony and dumbed down to where a 5 year old could figure out how to mash the buttons. It is so bad that even Smedly himself said that it wasn't good. And a recent developer conference in Austin the quote was "learn from our mistakes". It's widly rumored that the game will be "sunset" soon (they're gonna pull the plug on it). This "Complete" (I'm feeling sick here) edition is their last ditch effort to milk a little more cash out of it before it's all over.

This is just not how you do business. I personally will NEVER deal with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) EVER again. I DO NOT pay MY HARD EARNED MONEY to be lied to, deceived, ignored, strung along, censored, and banned for voicing my concerns. I do not pay money to folks who treat me, a PAYING CUSTOMER, in this fashion.

Star Wars Galaxies is dead. Servers are empty. People have moved on to other games where folks know how to appreciate their patrons. If you are a fan of Star Wars, and this is the only reason I ever started playing this game to begin with, you will be sadly disappointed!

SWG is nothing more than an exploit of a title, a milk machine. I for one, am tired of being milked.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Don't waste your time.

Sure the game is better than it was last year, when you start at the bottom there is only one way to go.

Assuming the people that read these reviews have _some_ gaming experience, here is what SWG has to offer.

A FPS'ish game that STILL has no collision detection, although collison detection had been promised to be implimented 6 months after release.

A FPS'ish game where NPC's STILL spawn in walls, rocks etc

A FPS'ish game where NPC can STILL shoot through walls, ceiling etc

25 servers to choose from unless you want to actually play with live people, which narrows you choices down to 2.

9 iconic profession. Hehe, 1 of which (entertainer) has absolutely no role in the game and another (crafter) that has been marginalized to the role of just north of useless.

I URGE people to download and play the free trial. Please do, and when you are done with it, compare it to just about any other MMO and come back here and write a review.

But whatever you do, don't spend money on this game.

Complete and utter failure!!!!

The one word to sum up this company is GREED. When this game started it was successful and fun for many players. Then along comes WOW which surpassed it in subscribers and revenue. This is when SWG took a bad turn. They revamped the complete game twice and this is actually the third itteration in hopes to emulate the success of WOW. Not only is this version a failure but it is by far the worst version of the game produced so far.

Also don't be fooled, all this is an attempt to grab some quick cash. This IS NOT a NEW GAME in any shape or fashion. This same exact version of the game has been out for a year. This company just decides that every few months or so they will repackage the game and put one little digital keepsake in the package so gamers will feel compelled to spend $40-50 again.

Stay as far away from this game and company as possible.

At least try the 14 day trial before spending any money

Some say the game is bad, some say the game is great. I can't argue either point as I quit playing last year after the NGE. What I can say is that this is what you can expect from SOE regarding this game:

Incomplete expansions that get shoved out early so monthly payments cover expenses rather than being fully funded.

Having any "work" you have done thrown out the window when they decide to chase after more phantom players.

Empty servers

Devs who only seem to understand first person shooters and who have no clue what makes a rpg fun.

Watered down versions of things that were once in the game, removed with the NGE and are slowly being added back as they try to keep subscriptions from bleeding too bad.

New box, same broken game

This product is just another attempt to grab a few more dollars from a dying and terribly broken game. Nearly deserted servers and badly written patches layered over obsolete and no longer usable items still laying around in game makes playing this like walking alone through an endless junkyard.

Stay away from this mess. Your wallet will thank you later.

Remember when your parents told you not to stick your hand in fire?

The negative reviews here are telling you exactly that "Don't stick your hand in the fire". Unfortunately there will be some that decide to anyway, in life there always is. Fortunately, they still get burned.

SOE is a terrible, and I mean terrible in all respect for the word, company. Absolute corporate greed and idiocy taken to unheard levels.

Want to know why these people are p.o.'d? SOE has no qualms whatsoever taking any achievements you have made and paid for in their games and tossing them by the wayside in pursuit of a mythical dollar that some marketing idiot had on a powerpoint slide. That's how much you mean to them as a customer. Expendable and a fast buck.

So if your interested in a game where you can accomplish and actually have the security of knowing your accomplishments will be there tomorrow, then by all means not only avoid this title, but SOE as a whole.

Game experience may change is taken to a whole new nasty level by these guys.

They finally turned this game around!

Star Wars Galaxies has been mired in poor developer decisions, broken content and bugs since it launched in the summer of 2003. But during the last few months an amazing change has taken place. The game is now... playable and even... fun!

I never would have thought I'd say it. This time last year I figured this game was destined for a slow and tortuous death. The NGE was the last straw for me and I figured I'd consign the game to my garbage bin once and for all.

However, by the time SWG The Complete Online Adventures arrived I was full of nostalgia for the good times I'd had in the game despite all the annoyances. So, on a whim I bought it and re-installed it. I restarted my old account, thinking that I'd just be taking a bit of a stroll down memory lane before giving up on the game again. But to my shock I'm actually enjoying the game - probably more than I ever have in the past. Most of the bugs have finally been squashed, the game content works, and the game actually seems like a game - it no longer feels like a badly-assembled set of features wrapped around a poorly-conceived Star Wars core. True, it could be improved, but the developers seem to be taking the game in a good direction, and it's improving fast.

The other amazing thing is that the game servers seem to be getting more populated than they have been in over a year. The game seems to be coming back to life.

There are detractors who can't accept the game unless it's in its original (2003-2004) state, but for those willing to give it another chance this game is more playable than it has ever been. The new Profession Experience System works brilliantly and makes the game a lot of fun to play. I never thought I'd be saying this, but the developers have done a great job in the last few months.

The fact is, 99% of the bad reviews of this game come from people who haven't played the game with the new experience system. A lot of these people quit the game permanently because they felt the NGE was a betrayal and they will never forgive SOE, but if people read reviews by these people they're not reading reviews of the current game.

Give this game a try. It's as good as any online game currently available.
