Scrabble 2 could do better!

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 12 / 12
Date: August 07, 2000

Fair enough, Scrabble 2's got all the 3D features, sounds effects, games review etc., but the question players should be asking themselves is "what dictionary is the software based on?" Anyone who plays championship scrabble and has been to tournaments will agree with me that basing the software only on Websters OSPD isn't sufficicient; What of Chamber's Official Scrabble Word (OSW)??, What about other players dictionaries acceptable in Scrabble tournaments worldwide? I was a lot disappointed with Scrabble 2 while playing the Champion level to discover it doesn't recognise many playable scrabble words.

Probably in the next version, Scrabble2 needs to be updated and equipped with these features to bring it to the same level of ratings as some current professional Chess softwares.

Doesn't Work with Windows Me

I expected to play Scrabble on the Scrabble, but instead I had to brush my browser arrow all over the screen, like a window cleaner, to get it to change. Then when I finally did get the scrabble board, part of it was hidden off the top of the screen. Hasbro advised that my Dell Celeron 3800 was sufficient for the job, but maybe the Windows Me doesn't quite fit Scrabble 2. I regretfully had to send it back. So if you have Windows Me, be prepared to be disappointed.

Totally Addictive!

I received this game as a birthday gift in August and not a day has gone by since then that I haven't played it. I was already a HUGE Scrabble player, but now I am totally 100% addicted. This game has greatly improved my skill and I love that I can increase the skill level as needed. I also like that I do not have to have anyone else to play with, but can just play against the computer. When I do play with other people now it is so much nicer playing on the computer - you never have to worry about missing tiles or cleaning up the tiles after you are finished. I was confident that this would be my last Scrabble purchase, but now that there is a new hand held Scrabble game I am not so sure...

No technical support

I am an avid scrabble player and play at the expert level. My computer has all the components necessary as listed in the instructions. However, after loading I was not able to successfully set options in v.2. When I called to get help, I felt like I was running around in circles. The telphone number kept me in a loop and I was unable to contact a human being. E-mails were to no avail. E-mail addresses were changed; e-mails were never answered. I always received an electronic response that said how much the company cared about its customers, but that obviously meant nothing. The old version is far from perfect, but at least I can use it. My advice, don't buy v.2.

Scrabble V2.0 - No customer support = No game

I purchased Scrabble V2.0 about eight months ago. Despite its quirks - computer challenges on words that are in its own online dictionary but "winning" the challenge anyway - it did help me greatly improve my score when playing with friends. I know that the ranking system in the CD is also far from accurate.

Problem is, however, that there no longer is customer support for this product even though it's listed as having it. After I reinstalled W95, I encountered a problem running the game. The problem had nothing to do with the well known colors issue. Online support didn't respond and their help line never puts you through to a real person. So, my Scrabble game is useless - just a warning for others considering purchasing the game.

Buyer beware.

Great classic game

Scrabble CD-rom is the game that we all grew up with but updated so that you can play on your computer. There are 6 different skill levels and you can play many different type games including classic scrabble against the computer, other players (up to 4), tournaments, online and special new mini games.

The best way is to challenge "maven" the computer opponent. You can chose his skill level and increase it as you progress. The game also contains a dictionary so there is no arguing over which words are real.

To help you, there is a cheat/hint code in the game that you can take advantage of when you are stuck.

I have a Sony Vaio computer running windows XP and i had no trouble installing and playing this game. Scrabble CD rom is the classic game but made modern and more fun.

Bad Customer Support

I received my new Scrabble at Christmas and I've not used it yet. When I hit play, my screen goes black and an error message comes up. (I have a new computer.) I've e-mailed many times and tried calling (the phone number included with the instructions is not valid) but I've not received any support. However, they did send a response when I registered on-line - go figure.

By far the best version of Scrabble

I was hesitant to get this program. I am not a frequent fan of Scrabble and felt that their earlier incarnations were sub-par. The 80's was just black and white and the Deluxe Version didn't take advantage of the technology (both are DOS). The Windows version before this came close, but resetting your color settings was annoying. This new version blows all previous versions out of the water. Finally, a choice of board views: slant or up and you can still easily read the word score tiles on the topside view (my favorite) and if you have the right soundboard, you will hear an orchestra of stupendous music. Please treat yourself to a soundboard (like the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) it is fabulous! Of course, if you prefer, you can turn off the music. You have three choices of board styles, a MUCH better selection of background art (no more dark and dreary somber backgrounds like the last version!!!) and a more realistic selection of replacement tiles; just like playing for real. You can also select auto-pick or have the computer auto-pick for you. Scrabble fans must have wrote in with suggestions on improving the game (I hope!) and it looks like they've listened. I hope they listen to that disappointed player who said they couldn't get tech support for it. I saw a patch for it at hasbrointeractive.com, but I think the patch solves mainly multiplayer issues, and not the ones the disappointed player has. I sincerely hope the problems for that person are resolved, as this is a great game, giving you more choices, more realistic play and is greatly entertaining.

This new, update version of Scrabble on CD-ROM is as entertaining as its' boardgame equivalent. Providing challenges that even the most professional players will find challenging, Scrabble 2 is a great to kill free time or develop your vocabulary skills.

The addition of a dictionary, in addition to the games screen views only adds to the excitement that the boardgames lacks when it comes to design and usefulness. The people at Hasbro have done it again, and I am totally elated that they decided to release this updated version on CD-ROM.

So if you are a single player in look for some major competition, or want to compete with a friend online, Scrabble 2 is your guarantee for an entertaining time. Add this to your shopping basket today, and see what I am raving about.

Scrabble 2 works with Windows ME afterall

A previoius reviewer informed us that Scabble 2 failed to operate properly with Micorsoft Windows ME. However, I have learned otherwise. My Dell, Pentium III, 800MHz allows Scrabble 2 to operate perfectly. I would recommend this game to anyone seeking hours of vocabulary enjoyment.
