before the need for speed series, i wasn't a fan of computer racing games. after getting nfs 3 i became a fan big time. need for speed 4: high stakes takes the title further into greatness by improving already amazing graphics. in fact, if you're not careful, you'll crash 'cause you'll be more focused on the scenery than the road ahead of you. try playing with the weather effects on for an even more beautiful game. the music and general sound effects are great too. controls are as easy as using the arrrow keys. the number of available cars is great, but some aren't available until your beat certain courses (same goes for some levels). you can't go wrong with this one, and if you have a home lan, you'll love the multiplayer option (which works over the internet as well).

After my friend let me play the game at his house it was very, very fun. It's very cool how your car gets damaged, but you should be able to choose a "no damage" option. The grapics are great, but the Lamborghini Diablo SV looks like a monster truck, cause of the LARGE wheels(that's the weird part). The cars look more realistic in NFS 3. NFS 4 is fun to play because of the:skid marks, dirt smoke, the look of the damaged cars, and the variety of cars. The cop mode is also very enjoyable. For high speed action, this game is for all you car lovers.
Impressive driving simulation game.

This is one of the most realistic driving simulation games available in the market. The reason is that there is actual damage effects if you drive your exotic cars recklessly.
One of the most impressive damage effects in this game is the damage effect of your car's tubeless tires. Tires could blow off and only the rims are left. The damage will in fact affect your sharp turns and the stability of your car. They also spark as a result of friction between the metal rims and hard asphalt.
Headlights and brakelights will be damaged as soon as your car bumps into something. The damage of your car's headlights will impair your driving at night. As a consequence, you can hardly drive your car at its top speed.
Other damage effects include the damage of your car's rooftop when your car turn over, tire marks on the road, and fire comes out from the gas tank. Furthermore, graphics and sound effects of this game are relatively comparable to its sequels.
The drawback of this game is that you cannot buy spare parts and fix the damages that you have caused to your car. You cannot pop the hood open and re-tune the engine after the race. You cannot modify your car. There is just so much things that you cannot do to your car.
In conclusion, without those impressive damage effects, this is just another typical driving simulation game. It is pretty boring and it just can't keep me playing for months.

As an avid driving sim gamer, I love the NFS series. The latest in this series, High Stakes, has great tracks, good special effects, and a killer Hot Pursuit mode that lets you chase or be chased. But, I have to say, the cars could look better. I guess I have been spoiled by Need for Speed 3. Don't get me wrong, any of the NFS games are better than any sim out there, but I still find myself playing NFS3 more than this one.
As with 3, you can download cars, or even build your own! And a great plus about High Stakes is that all the tracks that are in 3, are in this game. All in all, it's still a must have!

I'm not sure if it was my computer, but the graphics in this simualtion were terrible. I wasted my money. There is no comparison between this one and "Midtown Madness".

I don't mind if the graphics aren't completely state of the art, but this was ridiculous. Not only were the graphics terrible, but the rendering engine they used was pathetically slow and the effects were horrible. I ran this game on a P3-733Mhz with a DDR GeFORCE256 video card and could not enjoy the game at any decent resolution because of the huge frame hits you would receive depending upon where in the track you were. Terrible. Even at high resolutions the cars and tracks looked pixellated and cartoonish. I-76, which is many years older than this game has graphics which kill NS4. I am unbelievably dissapointed.

NFS: High Stakes looks absolutely wonderful. When you drive on the narrow mountain roads and the afternoon sun hit the distant mountainsides with its villages you forget about driving and let yourself amaze. The same is true when the moonlight glints in the treetops, leaving the road in absolutely darkness where it cannot break through (don't break your lights) and you can't help wishing when you see a shooting star. Anyone who says otherwise has a hardware problem. On top of that its fun, you really feel the difference when changing cars or upgrading the one you have. Things get very tense when entering the high stakes tournament, don't break anything if you loose. Last but not least don't drive convertible when it rains or snows its wet and cold.
One Heck of a RIDE!

I have played this game with the Act Labs Force Feedback racing wheel, and let me tell you it is awesome! I thought I was gonna fall out of my chair! The graphics are the best I've seen compared to "Need For Speed III" this is much better! The cars are hot, the bonus Porsche is the BOMB! I say hang on to your wheel and race, this is a great racing experience!

This game is awesome. For those people that think its like a boat racing game, well, I have something to say about that. You say it's a boat racing game because you suck at playing the game, you just don't know how to play it. You can't just play a game once and expect it to be just the way you want it. If you're so picky, then why don't you just make your own game, and if you do make your own game and you try really hard at making it and you think it's the best game ever. I bet people will review it and say it sucks.
