Great but not so great

This game is a fun game, only if you have a good computer with all of the requirements only a lot higher. When I play it, the graphics are terible even when I set them to the highest setting, and the races skip on you. This could be because of my computer, but I have a 98 hewlett packard. Besides the graphics and stuff, the game is awsome. You can download cars and tracks, and you can also win tracks and cars by winning the races against the computer. It keeps the competition going. There is also hot persuit where you can be the police or be run from them. If you are looking for a hot racing game I would recomend Need for Speed 3 or 4. I would not get Need for Speed High Stakes (4), unless you meat, or pass all of the requirements.

if it only worked right...

Well, let's start off with the good stuff: 1.great graphics 2.a lot of cars 3. downloadable cars from needforspeed.com 4.good gameplay and interface and now the bad: 1. you have to earn cars and tracks 2. the games system requirements are deceptive. our computer is almost double what it should be, but the game will only let us play one or two races before it crashes.

NFS: High Stakes looks absolutely wonderful. When you drive on the narrow mountain roads and the afternoon sun hit the distant mountainsides with its villages you forget about driving and let yourself amaze. The same is true when the moonlight glints in the treetops, leaving the road in absolutely darkness where it cannot break through (don't break your lights) and you can't help wishing when you see a shooting star. Anyone who says otherwise has a hardware problem. On top of that its fun, you really feel the difference when changing cars or upgrading the one you have. Things get very tense when entering the high stakes tournament, don't break anything if you loose. Last but not least don't drive convertible when it rains or snows its wet and cold.

Pretty good

If you have a 3dfx card, if you have a more advanced card like TNT2 or Geforce, just don't update your drivers and you should be alright. You don't get all the graphic benefits but it goes pretty fast in 32 bit mode at 1024 x 768. Nice selection of cars and cocpits too. Music very good. Engine noise could have been better, too synth, but better than most racing games. I haven't driven in a while but I know what it's like to go above the speed limit on a winding road. and this game is decent at simulating it(especicially if I play in a pitch dark room)

Great Game

I am a fan of racing games. But I don't really know how detailed I can get on the reality of this game. I don't have anything to accelerate my graphics, and I run all of it off a labtop, so I guess I ain't gettin all of it. But what I do get is awesome! There are so many cars, and they aren't from just 5 companies, there is loads. They even got Mclaren in there. When you just look at your track selection on the main screen its kinda disapointing. But there are loads to unlock, maybe even more then they give you straight away. I own a sidewinder joystick from Microsoft but I find it really hard to use on this game. Downloading the cars from the wesite never worked for me and I have a DSL line, but I don't know about anyone else. Midtown Madness is better but this still is a really cool game.

the best racing game ever!

This game is awsome it never gests boring, like other racing games I've played. This game would be better if there were more cars you can buy(and downlod). One of the best PC games I've played.

i had need for speed 2, 3, and high stakes and all were fun; liked the music and gamplay in high stakes, graphics could have been better though but other wise a good game. if you are into racing classics then this is the game to get.
