but not the greatest

after reading the praise for this game, i expected it to be the greatest, but found it not to be, though good enough to do three times as a single player, the last on expert. several things bothered me. first, this was a pure shooter with only 2 exceptional levels ("blast pit" and "surface tension"). blast pit was the only level with a hint of a puzzle. second, it was very easy. about halfway through, you get a glove that shoots bugs around corners. this can be used to kill everything except gonarch and the baby (the two big bosses). also, ammo is plentiful, especially since you dont need it, and you can get through this game taking very few hits. third, after having a reasonable story for the whole game, the last levels become ridiculous and implausible, the old islands in space routine, with octabrains derived from duke nukem. fourth, even at this late date, there were bugs; gordon stuck to elevators when they reached the top unless he was moving at the time.

positively, this games graphics still hold up very well after years. the AI is tough. half life's story and variety of weapons causes it to be eminently replayable (try to do the whole game with the crowbar). this game was also a milestone, with features that have been copied extensively (system shocks boss and deus ex crowbar, for example). i would rate this game as better than unreal, but not as good as system shock (hard and scary), nolf, undying, or deus ex. nonetheless, the bugs are surmountable, and, at the price now being asked, half life, regardless of age, is still great fun and a great buy.

Nothing before had come close, and nothing ever will...

This is plain and simply the best game I have ever player or ever expect to play. Sure some games have better graphics, some have more action, but nothing except Half-Life (including its mildly dissapointing sequels) has ever so brilliantly encompassed a great story, great gameplay, great characters, and great strategy.

It was a normal day for you, Gordan Freeman, an employee at the Black Mesa Research Facility deep in the bowels of the New Mexico desert. Sure, the computer system had been screwy, but your job was easy enough: don a "hazard suit" and do the task detailed to you by the scientists in charge. But then things went horribly awry, the shut-down procedure failed, and only the hazard suit you were wearing saved your life. You must make it to the surface, but the normal routes have been blocked off by the unforseen consequences of the experiment. Hapless unarmed scientists and rogue security guards may be some help, but aside from the weaponry you'll find, you'll have to rely on yourself to fight off the hordes of aliens spawned by the resonance cascade.

Everything about this game is brilliant. Sure, its story (penned not by some computer programmed but genuine sci-fi novelist Mark Laidlaw) of a scientific experiment gone wrong isn't exactly novel, but the fact that the game sticks with the story instead of using it as a clothesline for action sequenced makes up for it. The weapons, which number about 15, are healthily balanced between realistic and original, and are spaced throughout the game so that the player does not find all of them in ten minutes. The NPC's can be funny and are often helpful, the enemies ruthless and cunning.

There is no game I can reccomend more highly, do yourself a favor and play this game as soon as possible. 10/10

This game is awesome. It's old but good. The puzzles are fun, the weapons are interesting, it's got great AI and I love to play it over for old times sake. By this one before Half-Life two comes out, because this game was/is revoloutionary. It's one of the best FPS games with a fun storyline, fun plot, fun puzzles. OK, the graphics aren't great but hey! It's six years old!!! Trust me, for the price you by this, you won't regret it, I'm in love with this game and it's many sequels and MOD's. Don't get me started on the MOD (modification) Counter-Strike (the most played online game in the world), I play it daily!

BEST FPS ever

Well...Where to begin. This game is excellent. That's basically all I need to say. It's main game has a nice plot, your a scientist whose expieriment went wrong and you must do some stuff...AND SHOOT STUFF ALONG THE WAY!!! Most enemies are Smart, and tactically try to kill you, and the "Puzzles" are fun too. Plus, Deathmatch is fun, and all the "mods" by other people make the game infinately replayable.

If you like First Person Shooters/action games at all, you simply must try this.

All I have to say is this: This game is my second favorite game of all time, and you gotta really have a great game for it to even be remotely close to the top 5. This game is well deserving of the title "Game of the Year". This game has changed the way first person shooters are made. I see elements of this game present in games they have out today like Star Wars: Jedi Outcast and Max Payne. This game is awesome and has had an equally awesome effect on the first person shooters to come after it. Get this game and you will see what I mean.

Half-life seems to still be the holy grail of game development. Very few companies have been able to produce a game with such resounding success, both in single-player and multi-player arenas. Even with a game engine that is considered ancient by today's standards, Half-Life continues to dominate the FPS on-line gamming community. With the simplicity of the game engine and a great support for game modifications, Half-Life-driven games have popped up everywhere from some kid in his parent's house to huge game studios.
If you don't have this game already, you are missing out on a huge (and very addictive) on-line gaming experience.

This....this game is my kind of game!

Back...back on January 1rst, when I first saw half-life,
I half to admit one of the best sci-fi games of all time!
You are gordon freeman, a scientist, working at a decommsioned
military secret facility where scientists and security gaurds
blend with technology in the year 2000, which was not thought
possible, One day when scientist in the "anomolous materials
laboratory" where conducting a dangerous but pure and rare
specimen to a test chamber, filled with laser beam like technology, but the scientist went to far, plus they opened up
a worm hole between a border world believed to be called "xen."
After the disatirous experiment, aliens are killing everyone and
tearring apart the facility, while expolisions ensure and affect
the place, the goverment finds out and comes for you and kills
anything in sight, including you! Enough is scrambling to stay
alive for you when so much is about to happen! The graphics back
then in this game were impresssive, the sound is above average
from my opinion back then, the music is great, and basically, I
played the game for 2 years! I have to admit, this is a Execellent worth while game, yet today things have changed!ps. I
would recommend customers to buy this game!
