Got Practiced on CIV III? Now Play the World!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 13 / 26

With the incredible community out there all sharing info about one of the greatest god games to hit the shelves to date, it will be hard to maintain an edge in Play the World based on priviledged knowledge. The War Academy at CivFanatics alone contains so many volumes of data on best practice that it would take one several days to ingest it all.

Many are whining that a multiplayer edition should have been released with the original Civ III. I wholeheartedly disagree. These people misunderstand the basics of this series at its core. The community as it stands participates in succession games, games of the month, a democracy game where there is a hierarchy of leaders that decide the next moves in a single game and one person actualize these moves. It is incredible the amount of sharing and creativity people have involved themselves in to participate together in playing this single-player version. Now that we all know eachother and have gone through the arduous learning process together, we're ready to butt heads.

It is all with great comeraderie that we now wrestle on a multiplayer playing field. Those who gripe about the lack of multiplayer from day one are missing some of the most wonderful community in the current game and no doubt will be those most annoying to play in multiplayer. This multiplayer game is about to be dropped into one of the most amazing game communities and I for one look forward to crack heads with my friends from the forums.

Play the world. Take a clean well designed game and welcome it to the multiplayer world. I for one am very happy that I have played a relatively bug free - very stable game from the day it was released, rather than have to wait an extra 6 months for them to get multiplayer in the first edition and then have it crash every 5 minutes. I think that Firaxis and folks have done very well in their development and I look forward to their consistent stable performance in the Play the World edition to be released this week.

Play the World--Sorry, but you can play your freinds!

This is a GREAT add-on. The other reviews keep ranting and raving about how the multiplayer doesn't work, but THAT'S JUST ON-LINE! Try an internet cafe like a LAN setup and it works like MAGIC!

First of all, there are now EIGHT new civilizations: The Vikings, the Carthagians, the Celts, the Koreans, The Spanish, The Ottomans, The Arabs, and the Mongols (Huns).Obviously, these aren't the ones you immediately think of when making an original game (no offense intended to anyone,) but they add much more fun to the game. Each new civilization has been integrated seamlessly with the rest of the game, complete with characteristics and special units. Two new units have been added for all civs as well: Medievel Infantry and Guerillas, which were in Civ2. The interface is also much better. I've one twice now and I owe it all to the new interface!!! There is now a new wonder--the Internet (A great thing both in real life and in the game!) and there are numerous new city improvements and worker actions.

In multiplayer, you can play a hotseat game with only one computer needed, or a play-by-email if you don't have a good internet connection. This way is much faster then it would appear to be--and it retains all of the pacing. On LAN, you can play Simultaneous Turns, where everyone takes their turn at once (Frantic, but fun!) or the much-discussed TURNLESS, where there are NO turns whatsoever, and various things are kept track of by faction upkeep timers.

Great in every way, just don't play online!!!!!

Heir to the throne

The Expansion pack brings Civ III up to par with the fantastic titles that have gone before it. Finally, we are provided with some historical scenarios with "real world" starting positions. An amazing 30+ civilizations can vie for control in a single scenario. I have only begun to play with the editor that comes with the program, but it seems to allow for the kind of expansion and creativity that kept me playing Civ II when I bought it all those years ago until a few weeks ago when I bought the expansion pack to go along with Civ III.

Admittedly, I was not thrilled with Civ III by itself, but the expansion pack makes it a worthy successor to the Civ throne.

Great addition to an already great game

Play the World is an excellent addition to Civilization III. It adds 8 extra civilizations - the Ottomans, Arabs, Spanish, Vikings, Celts, Mongols, Carthaginians, and Koreans, bringing the grand total to 25. The multiplayer is great - I don't know what the other reviewers were complaining about. The editor is far better than the old one. Definitely buy this expansion pack!

Very Fun Game...

The Civilization series have been extremely fun and well made so far, although the game is not officially out yet, much has been revealed about it and it is not difficult to give it a rating.

Also...

"I find it really annoying that a standard feature in virtually every new game these days (multiplayer over the Internet) is released as an Expansion Pack"

What this person finds "annoying" about HOW the game was/is being released has absolutely nothing to do with the product's qualtiy which he/she is writing about! Speaking of trends, there seem to be many people rating irrelevant things in their reviews instead of the actual product.

Great addition to a very good game

First off, I really liked civ3, If you didn't like that you won't like the expansion.

The expansion as a some nice new elements to the game, a few new improvements, great worker automation, multiplayer, some game tweaks, and some new civilizations.

My favorite improvement is the increased build rate. Now you can finish a full game in a day versus a week. Makes it much more enjoyable.

The multiplayer doesn't really interest me. To many cheaters out there and basically I just am not good enough to beat the good players (can beat warlord but no higher)

Definately a great addition to a very good game

First off, civilization is one of the best strategy games i have ever played, and the only one i keep coming back to.
Second, this should have come in the first release... well if we look at the history of releases, they are particularly sadening games like RA2 and broodwar only add a couple of units while leaving other more serious problems unatended (RA2).
Third civilization games have never had multiplayer released initialy. it took them 3 years to incorperate multiplayer into civ 2 and the original game will never see it. While i have not played the expansion i am sure i am giong to buy it and enjoy it far more than many of the games i have purchased in the past.

... Ok, getting to te review part. Me and my friends are totally glued to this game, spending weeks in the summer trying to build a perfect civilization with a balance between military power and diplomatic resources. With that just set just think about the greatest young minds playing each other, trying to control key resources on the map such as Salt Peter to be the first to be able to build a musketman to crush your opponets weak longbow men or pikemen, or maybe be the first to control the first uranium deposits to stop the rest of your enemies from creating a ICBM, and use trade to give it to your allies. Of course, there are some disadvantages to such a great game, like t takes weeks to finish a resonable game, either by sending a spaceship to Alpha Centuri, Diplomatic or Militrastic domency and some others I don't fully remember the rest, but getting to the point it might take a couple days to finish a game and you'd have to get a good time to set up and play with your friends which might not be pleasant. And thats pretty much all of the cons so, if you plan on going out to the mall or local store, bring some cash and buy Civilization 3 expansion play the world and you'll have a great time.

The best Civilization yet

This expansion pack includes everything I've ever wanted in Civilization III. It adds new civilizations and new maps! You can set your maps to be historically correct to see what and how your favorite civilizations mastered their terrain and their neighbors. It adds new techonologies, wonders, units, everything. You cant play Civilization III without first buying this expansion pack because I can hardly imagine my playing experience without it.

It's a good add-on.

I really like this add-on. Yes, it should have been stuff added in the original game BUT gamers should realize that it costs money to program the near perfect game. If companies don't charge for "add-ons" then we can't expect newer versions of our games and entirely new games in the future from these companies. We'll be stuck with terrible games from companies that are just trying to make a quick buck and won't support the game properly. It's a good add-on at a fair price and makes a great game even better (even in single player mode)!
