This is the best of the civilization series. I have civ 4 and hardly ever play it as it sucks compare to this, I have had this for several years and it is still lots of fun to play.

Usefull but expensive.

I wrote a review of this pak a few months ago, and was a bit overwhelmed by the inability of the publishers to get the multi-play portion working.

Now thats it a few months later, I have managed to cough up 2 more stars, as i really like the extra civs. Online play is better, but it's still a slow playing game, so elimination seems to be the only choice of play unless you are sick with mono and have a spare 48hrs to play.

I've been playing civ3 relgiously now for allmost 2 years and still think it's the greatest game of all time, but I think 'Atari' (wutever) hyped it up to be sound better than what we got.

The Multiplayer JUST DOESN'T WORK!

So I figured it was just me... maybe I hadn't read the instructions well enough, maybe my computer was messed up...

But there were 50 people on GameSpy (Civ III's authorized multiplayer site) and not ONE of them could figure out how to get the game to run without either crashing the software or getting errors... I'm not saying it wasn't stable... I'm saying IT WOULDN'T WORK!

(Note that I had downloaded the latest patch - 1.04f already - before even TRYING to play.)

Maybe the game is just to complex to run multiplayer... if you want to be frustrated, you can do it for much less than the $ price tag.

(Also note that GameSpy is FAR inferior to other sites, i.e. Zone, which I blame on Firaxis. For example, some juvenile user was demeaning just about every user and their interface has no "ignore", no "report" and no support at all.)

Multi-player doesn't work

Works on LAN, but doesn't work over the Internet...which is really the only reason I bout it.

I spend several hours turning off my firewall, forwarding my linksys etc. Never got it to work over my broadband connection. (btw, their gamespy network gave more then half a dozen different ports that had to be opened...). Not only did I not get it to work, it crashed at varrious points in the process of either hosting or joining a multiplayer game. The game is a pig too, so it takes a min or two to clean up the memory and another couple minutes to start it up again.

...Oh, and the play be email is a farce. You would have to save the game after each turn, switch over to your email client, then send an email with attachement. Your opponent would nead to recieve the email using their email client, save the attachement, and open up the game as if loading a saved game. HA! What a joke. Anyone who's played civ knows that it would take years to play such a game.

I can't believe they shipped this game. What {poor quality}. It's not just buggy, it doesn't work whatsoever

improvents are rolling in

well, i just got the game, i have read the manuel, and played the game. i basicly got it just for the single player options (after reading reviews here, and in magazines about the multiplayer gameplay)

the new units are evryone can build are ( )= (shields, resource needed, adm, tech/replaced unit): midieval infrantry [upgrades from swordsman] (40, iron, 4.2.1,feudalism), guerillas [upgrades from viking beserk, medievil infantry, and longbowmen](90, none, 6.6.1 replaceaball parts) {you may notice that it cost's the same, and is avalible at the same time as infranrty, the good is that because finally the mddle age units aren't compleatly worthless after gunpowder else , and it doesn't require rubber to biuld}.

the tribe specific units are: ansar warrior (arabs, 60, horses/iron, 4.2.3, knight);Beserk (scandinavia, 70, none, 6.2.1, longbowmen)[can attack from a ship, just like marnies]; conquistador (spanish, 70, 3.2.2, horses, explorer)[treats all terain as roads], gallic swordsman (celts, 50, iron, 3.2.2, swordsman), Hwach'a (Korea, 40, slatpeter, 0.0.1 {ADM} 12.1.1 {BRF), cannon) [note: the guide says that th Hwach'a can kill units, not just injur them like cannos and artillery, but i know for a fact that [at least in the unpatched version] it can't); Keshik (Mongols, 60, horses, 4.2.2, knights) [note: Keshik can cross mountins as if they were plains, but still have the mountin's 100% defense]; numadian mercenary(carthaginians, 30, none, 2.2.1, spearmen) ; sipahi (ottomans, 80, horses/saltpeter, 8.3.3, calvalry).

there are new options like cycling through cities in disorder, stacking units (having them move together). workers have new options like build airfields {a very good ability} (used as a ligitament airbase, need flight), outpost (gives view of 2 squares flat land, 3 hills, and 4 mountins, needs masonary), and radar tower (gives an 25% atk/25% def bonus to all units within 2 squares, needs radio) all must be built in either friendly, or neutral teritory (except for the radar tower, which must be built in your teritory), all use up worker like a colony would. the new city improvements are: civil defense (providess 50% defense from atk , in all settlements [not just towns, like walls] can only be built in a city with a barracks, radio), commercial dock (gives all water squares bonus commerece [can only be built in a city with a harbor, minuturization), and stock enchanges (prety much same as banks [only can be built in a city with a bank, the corperation) note: the wall street small wonder now requires 5 stock exchanges, not 5 banks, the great wonder is the internet (puts a reaserch lab on all cities on the same continent, something very good becuase now all cities on that contienent produce culture!)

A good upgrad for Civ that is now obsolete

This expansion mainly adds network play to Civ III, but now that Civ IV is out, it is now obsolete. The only reason to buy this instead of Civ IV is if your system is too slow or lacks the graphics support to play Civ IV, which is a huge improvement over Civ III.
