Very Fun Game...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 14

The Civilization series have been extremely fun and well made so far, although the game is not officially out yet, much has been revealed about it and it is not difficult to give it a rating.

Also...

"I find it really annoying that a standard feature in virtually every new game these days (multiplayer over the Internet) is released as an Expansion Pack"

What this person finds "annoying" about HOW the game was/is being released has absolutely nothing to do with the product's qualtiy which he/she is writing about! Speaking of trends, there seem to be many people rating irrelevant things in their reviews instead of the actual product.

Adding things that should have been there before

This expansion mostly adds features that should have been included in the first release. Every decent strategy game out there ships with multiplayer...you shouldn't charge more later for what should be included. A scenario editor also comes standard in many games these days. It can't be difficult to ship a scenario editor with the game. A few more civilizations? Wow. Great. Woohoo. Not worth the price. If this had the kind of innovative content that Fantastic Worlds had when it was released as an expansion to Civ2, I'd look foreward to it. Unfortunately, it looks to be simply what's required to finish an incomplete game.

Say after me "Medievil: Total War" - No competition!

Am I the only one that thought that Civ3 outright sucked? Civilization and Civ2 were Earth-shattering for me. Then "Call to Power1 & 2" became favorites. Civ3 just seemed like a huge step backwards. Anyway, along comes Medievil: Total War. MTW is actually two games in one. It is a military/dictatorship strategy game on the one hand. Expect intuitive city management and troop creation menus. However, it is also an awesome combat engine. You can lead your troops DURING a battle. You can decide if it makes more since to have your longbowman fight melee style or leave that to your spearmen (which I strongly suggest). Everything about MTW is polished and intuitive. Comparing MTW to Civ3 would be like comparing Halo (the coolest game ever for those of you that haven't played Halo - drop what you are doing and get it) to Quake1 - they are both "first person shooters" but Halo has taken it to a whole new galaxy. Do not waste your hard earned money on Civ3. MTW is an intuitive addictive strategy game that won't let you go.

... Ok, getting to te review part. Me and my friends are totally glued to this game, spending weeks in the summer trying to build a perfect civilization with a balance between military power and diplomatic resources. With that just set just think about the greatest young minds playing each other, trying to control key resources on the map such as Salt Peter to be the first to be able to build a musketman to crush your opponets weak longbow men or pikemen, or maybe be the first to control the first uranium deposits to stop the rest of your enemies from creating a ICBM, and use trade to give it to your allies. Of course, there are some disadvantages to such a great game, like t takes weeks to finish a resonable game, either by sending a spaceship to Alpha Centuri, Diplomatic or Militrastic domency and some others I don't fully remember the rest, but getting to the point it might take a couple days to finish a game and you'd have to get a good time to set up and play with your friends which might not be pleasant. And thats pretty much all of the cons so, if you plan on going out to the mall or local store, bring some cash and buy Civilization 3 expansion play the world and you'll have a great time.

SLOW

I Like playing some of the senarios with 31 AI players on hudge maps 250 x 250. But there is one problem even with my fairly up to date cumputer, 1.6GHz and 512MB of Ram. The game is slow so slow I cant stand to play it. Even when I play with only 8 AI players after 3 or 4 hours the AI players moves take up a minute or so between turns. This ends the game for me. I have never played online, but the game speed cant be any better.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

I have been a Civ fan since the very beginning with version 1. Civ II was a great improvment over the first, particularly in graphics, and game speed. I was greatly anticipating Civ III, and have never been as satisfied with that version as Civ II. I won't even consider this expansion pack, as Civ III sits on the shelf collecting dust, while Civ II is played all the time.

The Best Yet

This is, in my opinion, the greatest member of the Civilization. I just ordered Conquests, so we'll se how that goes, but I've personally logged about 1000 hours on PTW. The new advanced orders make the game a lot less tedious at the higher levels. Multiplayer is REALLY WORTH IT, believe me. I don't even use it online, and I do hotseat games. Seriously, if strategy games are your thing, PTW is the ultimate.

Give and take

If you like to customize your Civ games with custom maps, then this expansion offers lots of great new terrain for you to work with. Plain and simple, that is the only reason I got it. There are a few additional tweeks like scenerio building and some new units, but that's it.

If you plan on getting this game for multiplayer, then skip it, because it was like an after thought.

For anyone running PTW or just Civ3 on older systems, stick to smaller maps if you want the game to run faster. Newer systems do fine and I have to agree with another reviewer, if you are experiencing lag, then your machine needs upgrading. I have only experienced lag on the huge maps and not anything really annoying either. I'm running the game on a AMD 1 ghz machine.

As for lots of patches, there has only been 2 for Civ3 and one for PTW which mainly deals with multiplayer, which once again, is not really worth it. Releasing 3 patches is nothing compared to some other games.

Pretty awesome

It's historical, fun, challenging, and with the networking options on the expansion, it's well worth the money. Except for the fact the new one is out, and it is just as fun as this one, if not more, if you don't have a very up to date computer, this should run fine. An excellent strategy game for all ages.

Great expansion, multiplayer becomes a little confusing.

My son and I purchased two copies of the original Civ III, and found no multiplayer option, so we purchased this expansion. It works well, and is great fun, but the multiplayer options are a bit more confusing than the turn-based original game. All in all, it is a good expansion. The upgrades are excellent, and make the original game even better.
