Quality cake with nasty crisco frosting

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 2

Sure, this game is fun in a progressive, construction set way. Civilization simplfied and narrowed to keeping your golfers amused, not playing too slowly, and well fed and rested. No doubt, building a golf course and watching the little guys take it on is fun for a while. The game is cake.

But... Entering and exiting the game is a pain, it takes forever considering the modest graphics and sound. I'm using a new, fast P4, why does it take so long to load, and why is EA so paraniod about priracy that you have to enter a code, and then, everytime you start up, the CD has to be in your CD drive. Also, why can't a simple tap on the enter key skip over the intro, and why two screens and an animation just to get out of the game. The frosting is just sickenly sweet and greasy. Oh, and all this is after downloading the patches from the website.

The basic game is great (after patches), but the stupid, stupid stuff that EA (apparently) did to it just annoys me. I suggest you skip the hassle and look at something else.

Fun and addictive!

I'm not a golf fan, really, but I do really enjoy sim games; give me a strategy game -- especially of the god game variety -- and I'm happy.

I picked this game up on a whim, both because I appreciate most of Sid Meier's games, and because it just looked like it might be fun to play with.

I wasn't disappointed. I've been playing it addictively and staying up far too late building my course.

This is a highly addictive game, quite easy to learn, and it's amusing to watch the sims run about ranting and raving and enjoying themselves. Part of the challenge is getting the layout of the course done logially; so far I end up making circular tracks, although there is an option to renumber your holes later on. With the limited land available initially until you earn the right to buy more, you need to be cautious in your creations. Once you get the hang of it, you can design award-winning holes effortlessly. the hardest part is meeting all the criteria of imagination, difficulty and length -- I haven't yet figured out what makes an imaginative hole. (Indeed, some of my holes that I thought were easier have ended up labeled heroic!) You can take your pro to play your own holes, but it's slow and sometimes annoying, without much finesse needed -- all you must do is shoose the type of shot, point and click.

The game does have its faults. As someone else mentioned, the exit screen is far too long, and I usually end up leaving something running in the background so I can alt-tab over to it to let it close without looking it. It occasionally crashes out on my XP Pro machine whehn I try to run a tournament, but I suspect that's due to the fact that I have a really low powered and old video card in it right now, so shouldn't be taken as gospel. At work, I didn't have any trouble at all.

It can also be too easy -- I've made millions on my second course, playing in normal mode. I made as many on the first, playing in easy. It can get repetitive, with doing the different holes on different sites, but it seems like if you make a plan to have different flavors at each, you can make it enjoyable for yourself.

In sum, while it's not a perfect game, it's an enjoyable management game without the hassle of games such as SimCoaster or other games that require micromanagement. There's no micromanagement needed here, and I'm comfortable letting my sims work through their difficulties with the holes initially to get to enjoy them more. Try it, if you're into Simulation and management games; you'll like it!

Great.... but falls short.

I think SimGolf is a great game. For the people who gave this game a 1 or 2 star rating... you're just jealous. You couldn't build a better game (unless you know games). The championships that you can hold are pretty cool, but too easy, which isn't a dissapointment, but it could get in the way of some buyers. The game has good course options, such as pot bunkers, waste bunkers, and some course options you know already (if you play or watch golf). A few dissapointments... there's not enough land on the sandbox (no money-hassle) mode. You can buy land on normal mode (but only a little), and it's still not enough to give you a good course, and like some reviewers said, there's not enough buildings, which is kinda dissapointing. For golf and sim fans, buy this game! Or borrow it.

The Best "Tycoon" Simulation I Have Ever Played!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 5

In short, this was the best simulation of a real life "tycoon" sort of game I have ever played. The game allows people who do not play golf to enjoy the exiting aspect of it, and actually play in-game tournaments and matches agaisnt pro's

At first, the most appealing thing of the game to me as a pre-teen was the "Sim" name in the title. Once I started playing, I couldnt stop. I loved the challenge of pleasing my members, the real life golf things like the hazards, and I enjoyed the actual golf games and skills you had.

In short, I loved this game, and I can see why "Sim" is still a leading producer of excellent simulation games!

SimGolf is wicked!

I looked into information on this game and it seemed very interesting. So I downloaded the SimGolf Demo at Gamespy.com and I have to say, this is one of the best games ever! The gameplay is extordinary and the graphics are awesome! You start out as a golf course designer and you have to build golf courses that are fun and have lots of creativity put into them. You can complete your courses with water, rough, rocks, streams, sand traps, and a lot more hazards to make your courses challenging, but still fun. Also, you can help improve your golfers skills by adding pro shops, driving ranges, put practices, and a lot of other buildings such as snack bars, resorts, marinas, and just about anything you can think of. Your golfers are like real people. They talk to each other, fight with each other, get tired, thirsty, hungry, and they do just about anything you would do, but the fun just doesn't stop there! You can also hold tournaments and if you win a tournament you get lots of cash to improve your golf course. I love playing on my golf courses, but on the demo you can only build three holes. Well, this game has almost everything packed into it. I simply love the demo and I can't wait for the SimGolf game to come out in stores! If you love games where you have to work everything out with strategy and love building things then I say get this game. SimGolf has eye-popping graphics, sweet sweet gameplay, and a hell of a lot more just waiting to be chewed on. I can't wait for SimGolf to come out in stores in early 2002 because this is just simply, one of the best games in life history!!!

Promising but too easy

The game starts out where you need to conserve money and build your holes just right. But after you've made three holes the money starts to pour in and you can make any kind of hole and people will love it. Way too easy. The most annoying part of the game is that you constantly have to wait for the county commisioner to come and allow you to buy land. The waiting gets tedious when you have no room to build, and therefore nothing to do. The game starts out well but quickly becomes a tedious bore, fun but boring.

Good game.....for about 3 days.

First of all, why do people review games and give 5 stars months before a game is released? Some reviewers haven't even played a demo.

Anyway, I am a big Sid Meier/Will Wright fan and always expect great games from them. This game is average at best. This game is graphically pleasing, but there is no depth. At first I was surprised at how little documentation came with this game. The manual is tiny. However, I think it is because the game is so 1 dimensional.

Yes, you can design a golf course and tend to a limited number of your sim golfers' needs. But, where is the replayability? Am I going to want to play this game again so I can have a 3rd hole with a dog leg left instead of a dog leg right? I don't think so. I guess I expected more strategy; something I could sink my teeth into.

Very disappointing.

An overall good game

This is a pretty good game. then why four stars? Well, I was really disapointed when i saw the graphics, i was expecting them to be better than what they are. i didn't play this game more than an hour a day, and it still only took me three days to master it. i played it for two weeks and it got too easy, so i went back to the ps2. when i first got it all i really wanted to do is play my course, but it doesn't take long to master that area. its always easy to make the first ten holes, but then it gets tricky to fit in the rest of the holes, and you start making all these crazy and extremely short holes that the players don't like. i recomend doing sandbox mode first, it really teache yu how to fit in your holes. but it doesn't teach you how to spend you money. but it only takes me three years to be a millionair now. if you don't play computer every day of the week, you will enjoy playing this game.

I have played the demo (comes with The Sims:Hot Date) , and I must say it's one of the best golf games made yet. I play this almost as much as The Sims Hot Date. Best demo I have ever played since the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo!!!!

Fun for golf fans or SIM fans...even better if you're both!

Since I am both of the above, I love this game. While not the best of either genre, it does a great job of combining them. It lacks the depth of Sim City, but more than makes up for it with the humor of the later Sim games. And though it's no Links 2001 or Tiger Woods, the fun of easily designing your own course and seeing it come to life puts it in a class of its own. That, of course, is the key to its appeal...there is nothing else even remotely like it. Design your own course, design your own players, then play as or against them while trying to manage everything from duffers to dandelions...all while turning a profit. Prepare to give up a little sleep while you "build just one more hole tonight". If I love it so much, why not give it 5 stars? While it does a lot, it also demands a lot. My K6-II 500mhz machine with 128meg of RAM and a 32meg Radeon video card almost seems to be minimum for this game. Screen panning is a slow affair, an affliction in all SIM games since the beginning, and the bigger the course gets, the more noticible it becomes. In the games's defense, there is a LOT going on at all times on the screen, and the animations are amazing for their size. But that brings us to the next nit-pick...too much going on at once. When things get busy, so much dialog text pops up on the screen that it overlaps each other. Where the Sims has 3 or 4 people talking at once, Sim Golf has literally dozens. Add to that a camera that snaps pics of every momentous occasion and displays it on the screen right where it happened, and mayhem can ensue. Both these features can be turned off, but the golfer conversations are a big part of the game. And the photos, even when turned off, often appear for a split second, as does the accompanying sound. The last nit is a slightly clunky interface. Icons range from small to smaller, and many are not very intuitively placed. (Why are the flowering trees in one menu, and the rest in another??) Still, none of these minor problems detract much from the game. So put that greenside lot on the market and see if Britney Aguilera moves in.
