Twenty hours, no sleep...must keep playing...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 6

I don't understand how someone can say they have been playing the game for two weeks when it's only been out for one. At the time of this writing the server I play on has five hundred people and it's almost too crowded. You can't go to ANY town without seeing someone else.

The thing to keep in mind about this game is that it looks absolutely fantastic! It will keep improving too! Every month they are going to add new content and fix bugs. You can't buy another game ANYWHERE where the devolopers are constantly updating the product on a consistent monthly basis. So yeah, it has bugs and the game comes with a can of RAID! If this game ages as gracefully as AC1 you can expect it to stay state of the art for quite some time.

If you get addicted to social rpg games like this, you'll be stuck at your computer without sleep or food. You better get someone to remind you to go to the bathroom as well. You'll be dying to get "just one more level." The crafting system is a million times more fun than DAOC. I love making my own stuff and helping other people find ingredients.

The monsters are much smarter than other games too. They call for help, target attacks and also know how to get around objects.

I don't care what anyone else says. Writing this review is cutting into my play time! See you on the servers!

AC addict dissapointed in the new sequel

I have played AC1 since shortly after retail release and have put literally thousands of hours into it. With that being said, I have don't think that I will subscribe to the sequel. It is a completely dumbed down, simplistic version of the first game. AC1 was completely immersive and unique in its game play. Save the amazing graphics of AC2, the game play is more akin to a console game. Unless they make great strides in improvements and paradigm shift changes, it will not be nearly the addictive experience that the prior version was.

If you spend your money for this game, you are easily entertained. You like soaps, and can spend a day watching ants.
I have played the beta from inception, and tried to find enjoyment in this game, but have failed.

The only one for me

It's obvious that no single game can please everyone. None of the others have grabbed me in the least. And I've tried them all. After playing AC1 for 2.5 years (accounting for nearly 3 months of my life!) I engaged the AC2 beta.
I'm going in. It's not about graphics (though they're awesome). It's about creativity, a legend with a 'hook', characters I can identify with, and community. Maybe more people like myself are attracted to AC for the same reasons I am, and that's why we find it so attractive. So go play E&B, EQ, AO, DAoC, or whatever, and have a great time. We won't miss you. We've got things to do....

AC2 - A Review.

I am a freelance writer and I write reviews and articles on the online game industry - mainly massive multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPG's). Now I have written reviews and articles on such games as AC, EQ, DAoC, Lineage II and many other MMORPG's. I have been playing and writing about these games since I played my first one (MMORPG that is) on AOL, way back, before the big three were even being considered. Therefore, I think I have some ideal what I am talking about and I will not say anything that is not the truth. This is my opinion - nothing less - nothing more on the game of Asheron's Call 2.

If you have been waiting with great anticipation for AC2 to be a game that would a big improvement of what is all ready on the market - be prepared for some disappointment. We are asked by Amazon to rank this game on a scale of 1 to 5 for its fun factor. I give it a one. Here is why. This game is not fun. It is at best a FPS placed in a world of swords and sorcery and is in no way, shape, or form, an MMORPG. In fact, it is one of the saddest attempts at an MMORPG I have yet come across. You can literally stand in one spot and gain levels, kill mobs, and craft without ever having to move.

Character creation is a snap. No character attributes are given for players to tweak. Just pick your race (three to choose from -Human, Lugian and Tumerok), gender, tweak your character's looks (hair, face, height, cloths colors, etc, etc, (very limited as it is in beta right now)) and enter the game. You then proceed to level and learn new skills via a skill tree system. A skill tree that is very similar to the one you find in Diablo 2 only less balanced and linear. You can game some experience to raise your level the skills you choose via quest or by joining a monarchy, however, a very large (in many players cases who decide to play the game) portion will come from one thing - killing mobs. Most AI for mobs is poorly executed and many mobs will even aggro on players even though the mob is all ready engaged with another player or players. Some mobs aggro distance is so great that you don't even have to be close to them for them to zero in on you and start attacking.

Player skill trees are not balanced yet, and many skills that are available to players are either not working right or need a hefty smack with a nerf bat. Pets in game are good to have at times, but you better have a good sense of humor and have a lot of patience, because the pets available for players in AC2 are some of the stupidest creatures to ever grace an MMORPG.

The so called, unique to each player or group, vault dungeon quest that players can go on are not unique and they are more-or-less a wait in line to kill the boss mob (creature) at the end of the dungeon. Your reward for completing the vault dungeon quest - experience points and a slide show. In fact many of the quest you go on are unimaginative, repetitive and lack any kind of real reason for a player to even participate in them - other than too gain "Quest Points". Some quest are given by large Tiki Head type monoliths that ask players to go slay a certain number of mobs. Others are given to players through the consumption of elixirs to do something very similar. Even at the higher levels in the game the quest are dull and simple, and not worth the effort to do.

The game will have elements of PvP and KvK (player vs. player and kingdom vs. kingdom) of which players will be able to participate. From my experience with the PvP (KvK is only just now really being tested so I can't say how well this will actually work) if you want to rule-the-roost, sorta speak, play an Archer/Enchanter. You will have range and power that cannot be beat.

This game is not all hack-and-slash though. Players can opt to be crafters - though you will learn that in order to craft you will have to go and kill mobs. Though the GUI used for crafting (tedious and repetitive) is lacking in many areas, however, it is well worth a player's time to learn to craft their own weapons, armor and such. Player crafted weapons and armor are more powerful (in most cases), for your level, than the ones you can loot from mobs you have killed.

The game, as it is in beta right now, and the one that is going to be released soon, has a very poorly designed GUI. Chat system and inventory control are the worse I have encountered in any game of this type ever. The graphics are good (if you have a system capable of running it in high detail), however the animations are sub-par for characters and there are many unexplained objects that float - whole city buildings, creatures, tree's, even parts of the ocean that surround the islands that players play on.

Now given that the game is not out of beta yet, this opinion of mine is not worth much, however, the games basic mechanics are in place and the developers have said that what beta tester's see now is pretty much what will be shipped. Turbine has a proven record of accomplishment with AC and its monthly updates, and AC has turned into a decent game. However, there are many things that will be in the initial release of AC2 that will need some major rework before their newest game (IMHO) will even be half as fun to play as their current game on the market is.

Improved graphic but nothing new

Nothing new here really compared to Dark Age Of Camelot except for better graphics.
If you like running around in a "dead" world wasting your life beating on monsters day out and day in just to get xp and a higher lvl that no one cares about anyway, this game is for you.
Otherwise wait for another more creative and intresting mmorpg game to come out and do something else during that time.

Nice looking graphics, but ...

I have been a beta tester for quite a while and so far AC2 did not meet the expectations of most beta players (check out AC2 beta forums). I would recommend checking it out before you place your order. If you are looking for depth of play similiar to AC this might be the wrong game for you. Here are some pros and cons.

Pros:
-great graphics
-nice looking seemless dungeons (mostly without portal)
-good monster AI
-easy to learn

Cons:
-no NPCs!!!!!! Just to be clear on that. It means NO stores, NO in-game NPS help or communication of whatsoever.
-no economic system except player economy (I guess that means if you are a casual gamer you will be stuck with looted weapons and armor that suck); loot can be converted in backpack to gold that, since there aren't any stores, is useless
-simplified skill system (kind of like Diablo, but far away from AC1's detailed skill system)
-no role playing because you will be stuck with hunting monsters since there is nothing else to do...

-all combat types play the same (magic/hand weapons/missile weapons). None of them needs any supplies (no arrows, no ingredients, ...). Basically you aquire a bow and it comes with unlimited ammunition...
-small game world; don't get mislead by endlessly curving valleys leading you around in circles... Don't get me wrong. It is still quite big and very detailed, but relatively small compared to similar titles.

Unfortunately it appears that AC2 will become just another great looking MMPORG without much content. It will surely have some nice and cool looking events, but there is a lot of substance missing. Looking at the game itself and noticing that it has cities with houses that can't be entered it almost appears that Turbine tried to cut some corners (no NPC economy, no transportation or housing, ...) to be out first with a good looking next generation MMPORG. Unfortunately this came with a price that hurts the longterm play value which is quite important in this game category.

I can only recommend to check it out before you buy and be sure that monster killing is all you are looking for...

This had a great potential, but it didn't get used for some reason... :(

Still Needs Work

Summary of major areas: (all info as of beta 10/24/02)

1. Graphics - Outstanding overall with many ways to tailor them to your system performance. However, I would highly recommend that if you do not have a GeForce based video card, evaluate and purchase one to fully enjoy this game.

2. Sound - Extremely good sound with controls to lower different types of sounds in the game. Sounds can decrease game stability/usability.

3. GUI - The GUI needs major work. One open inventory with no way to organize items; text in the chat interface cannot be modified color/size/font wise. Opening one informational window means closing another. GUI elements appear to be static. No ability to increase/decrease transparency of items.

4. Skills - Skills still need major balancing. Human missile skill has superior range to other two races' missile skills, allowing archers to solo more easily while doing the same damage. Some skills do not work, period. Pet pathing is poor and pets have no commands for guidance.

5. Crafting - Crafting is good but needs improvement. Higher quality crafted items require drops that are hard to find while creature drop items are often equal/superior to crafted items.

6. Portal spells such as portal recall are in the game but do not work as they did in AC1.

Many other issues. Has a lot of potential but missing the mark.

AC2 Beta to Retail

I played Ac2 beta from about august 02 until e.o.b. (end of Beta), and i have to say that despite dealing with glitches and constant updates -which should both be expected during a beta test- the game is amazing. Alot of people will have nothing but bad things to say about lag, but I rarely had diffulty. Sure I had to turn some of the fancy textures down, but tall grass in this type of setting creates its own problems. My computer is also not a super computer. I have a modest 866mhz coppermine processor with a geforce3 ti 500 video card a 7200 rpm Maxtor hard drive, and 384 MB pc 133 sdram. These are not amazing stats by any computer standard, yet I had very little difficulty with lag problems unless I was in an area that was very highly populated area, and believe me there can be plenty of other reasons to stay away from highly populated areas.
So, I say to everyone who has not played AC1 -I never did- and who has thought about playing AC2, if you like RPG's this game rules! Sure it has a few problems, but all games do, and the thing that all of thes negative reports are not telling you is that you will find versatility, graphics, and practical solutions to most of your old RPG disappointments that may have stemmed from other RPG games which were seriously lacking. I also strongly suspect that updates to the retail version will come fairly quickly and most of AC2's problems will be solved in a timely manner.

Thank you for letting me speak,
Tony (AC2 Fan)

If stunning graphics bogged down in lackluster play and repetitive fighting is your cup of tea, I invite you to have your fill. Just don't choke on the Doormouse. Though still in beta this game offers up nothing new to MMORPG fans and seems to enjoy all the weakest aspects of what is out there already. Only time will tell, perhaps after 6 months of monthly updates this mutt might start to show some pedigree.
