It is a blast.

I've played AC1 for a few hundred levels on various characters, 2 characters on DAoC to 50 & played AO for not to long.

After you play AC2 for awhile you realize that this game is actually more complex & fun then the others. It takes awhile to grasp why this is so, but when you do the game rocks.

Amazing graphics (you are gonna need at mimum a decent computer)

Slaughtering endless counts of monsters is not a must since the quests & vaults provide much better xp & offer a nice diversion from killing critters.

Great Crafting system once you start to understand it & advance your skills.

Excellent PvP gameplay at later levels.

Turbine is well known for doing some of the best monthly content updates in the industry, and they havc twice the staff to do this in ac2 then they did in ac1, so you can expect great updates monthly.

Playing the Beta..
Its the same thing over and over again. Since UO and EQ nothing new has been added to the MMORPG. The true poverty of the online gaming world is not in the graphics engines or the power of the hardware. The poverty resides in the game writers total lack of imagination.
This one is EQ/Camelot warmed over.. no new stuff here.

Being a EQ fan with a couple of level 60 toons, I was excited to check out the new AC2. The graphic textures are great. Be prepared to kill some rats and wasps to start leveling up. The animation when fighting is interesting. Looks like the rats have been practicing Kungfu since their days of EQ? Since I would rather go lance a boil than play the first AC, (yep, I hated it)I wanted to go into this review with a frest, clean taste in my mouth, placing my bias in a lockbox. Keep in mind this is beta, better than delta, but not alpha yet. If you like traveling the country side and enjoying the graphics of a game, this is enjoyable. If you like to kill and level up there is lots of blood to spill. If you looking for high social development that other massive online games are shooting for you may want to wait for their release. If you want to get away from Verant and Sony's Big Brother control, this may be the ticket. I am looking forward to see what refined and additions come with the retail version so I can give them one more star!
Not new enough for two. Here is the break down
Graphics 4.7 stars ****.

First off to clear things up there is Alot of fantasy on both sides. The game is fun, but currently lacks depth. The beta is very bare bones and there are core issues that need fixed. On the up side Turbine has a very established track record of adding content. If they fix the core issues, Chat being my biggest pet peeve for items that need correction, the game has good potential.

A lot of the haters are AC1 fans who simply wanted a reworked AC1. This is a different game very loosely based on the lore of AC1 that is it.

I am a current player of Asheron's call, and i must say that this game was the biggest disapointment ever. The game has great graphics thats true, but it lacks a better combat system wich is one of the things use the most in a game like this and this combat system is way to basic and boring to be anything good. Furthermor there isnt that big diference betwen characters like in the original asherons call.

Lets see... AC2 is the best upcoming level treadmill you can buy! It's extremely dumbed down and boring. If you've enjoyed any previous mmorpg before, you won't like AC2. And because you don't, some very dumb people will say you're holding on to the past too much and call you a mean ugly troll. Riiiiight, more like we don't accept a piece of ... just because it's new. Here's what the supposed to be second generation game has to offer:

General:
-no content, except leveling
-a world empty of humanoid npc's, although there's the occasional talking stone head
-no place to buy even the most basic equipment
-great looking player/monster models that require a rather high end system to run at all-everyone looks the same since everyone is wearing the same equipment
-no helmets in the game?
-bad and uninteresting loot system, quest items aren't worth getting
-equipment options in general is bland. little variety in what there is to use.

Interface:
-non customizable (ie resizable windows / movable etc)
-hard to read, can't change text colors
-group window doesn't show important information and updates very slowly
-no group seeking option
-no pet controls
-missing several standard "/" slash commands like /who

Combat / Play:
-simple and boring (hit 2 buttons over and over)
-no specific group roles, groups chaotic
-no group loot sharing options
-horrid monster / pet AI
-no damage tactics, ie slashing damage or piercing damage. (ie its very dumbed down)

Characters:
-no depth, extremely dumbed down
-little ability to customize, everyone is the same
-no stats or race bonuses / all have same health and vigor
-diablo style skill tree forcing cookie cutter characters
-everyone is equally good at fighter/archer/mage
-very poorly balanced skills, most pick the few same skills that actually work.
-poor equipment balance, people fight naked since armor is basically useless and you can attack faster w/o it
-few specific numbers, you just don't know what's really happening with buffs or abilities.

-comes with a rabid pack of fanbois that swear its the best game ever because they just can't come to grips with reality.

and the list goes on and on. I highly recommend playing solitaire over AC2, it has more content and difficulty than AC2 will ever achieve. This game just shows that game companies are clueless about what players really want, and continue to uphold the idea that a game can be finished 6 months after release.

Alot of Wrong info....

Seems that alot of people that have claimed to have played beta... Haven't really.. Only humans for instance can be archers (heh heh). And no Trolling the Ac2 Vault boards doesn't not mean you have played the game.

The idea of the game is AWSOME! Defending cities with your kindgoms, crafting your own bows/swords/armor. No NPC vendors. I loved the way they set up the game. The story... the way you can interact with it... You shape the things that happen. As far as the Skill trees, they are alot more complex than they first appear to be. But you would have to go take a look at them for yourself.

This game is very lousey

I tried this game for about 4 weeks it really ... There is not plot to the game its a copy off of "Dark Ages of Camelot", graphics are nice, but that all i can say that is good about the game. If you really like "Dark Ages of Camelot" stick with that game. If you like asherons call 1 stick with that game I dont recommed this game to anyone. unless you have a great time doing nothing but powerleveling and wandering around with out a point.

... well the graphics ARE great but only if your PC can load it ...
I have created must of the characters and find the Archer works best for me ...but not to happy with the vitae reduction system or the way the xp system works.....but I'm sure over time changes will be made to make most of the players happy.

High Hopes Lead to Bitter Disappointment

My daughter played Asheron's Call for two years. She grew bored with it in time and eagerly anticipated the release of Asheron's call 2. After playing the AC2 beta for one week she quit in disgust.

My wife loved (and still loves) Asheron's Call. She was very excited when she got the chance to play in the Asheron's Call 2 beta. For three or four weeks she struggled along finding less and less to like. But she always hoped it would improve. I'd play in the beta with her once in a while.

Then one day we stopped playing, looked at each other and she said "it's awfully hard to find much fun in this game."

We haven't been back since. Very disappointing game; simple-minded and totally lacking in any long term fun or satisfaction.
