A little too short, but an awesome game none the less

After playing many an adventure game (including classics such as "The Longest Journey", "Grim Fandango", and "The Neverhood") this one has the makings of a great game. While it is graphically stunning with a sound track that combines with the graphics to create a rather stunning and memorable atmosphere dealing with the paranormal. The story is just as awesome, with game play that is quite excellent (although the puzzles are rather easy) this game is deserving of five stars, although the ride goes way to fast, thus knocking the game down to four stars. To sum it up, it's short, but it is a sweet game. This is a must have for any adventure game fan.

One of the spookiest games I've ever played!

This is a very simple game, much like many of the other "point and click" style Myst clones, but for some reason this game SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME. Don't get me wrong, this is not a perfect game- it has it's ups and downs, but there were a couple of instances in this game when I actually got the "willies" (and that is rare for me with a video game). I will never forget sitting on a sunny summer afternoon playing this game and the hairs on my arm actually standing up- I kid you not! While Amber is a bit dated by today's standards, it is still a very attactive game with tons of atmosphere. I can't really put my finger on why this game got to me- sometimes the stars line up I guess, and this was one of those instances. This is definitely not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely reccomend it.

Wonderfully scary and entertaining! Needs a Sequel!

I love adventure puzzle games and this did not disappoint! It really is more scary than you would think and all without a lot of the gore that frankly sickens me that you see in many computer games and movies. Reminiscent of the older scary ghost story movies that can create a chill up your spine and many looks over your shoulder. Really engrossing and like many of the other reviewers I found it a lot shorter than I'd like. Please game creators, give us a sequel and make it much longer! I, for one, would be willing to pay the extra money!

Great game. Wish it was longer.

I found this game in the discount rack at an office supply store. I love these types of games. The graphics and sounds were great, though some was hard to understand. I loved the era shifting and experiencing different 'hauntings.' Only wished it had been longer.

Pretty good game...

This game has nice visuals and a decent storyline. It's not terribly difficult, so there shouldn't be too many times when you're stuck in a rut at any given point. Ignore the reviews by people who are down-grading the quality because they didn't bother to look at the system requirements before purchasing it (Windows2000 is not and never has been "backward compatible" with Windows 95...they have totally different source code and work on different architectures. As for XP, yes this game will work on XP, if you run it in compatibility mode for Windows 95 or 98. Compatibility mode isn't a feature of Windows2000, so that's why you won't be able to run it on that platform).

One of the better ghost stories ever told

The title grabbed my attention. Everything about Amber:Journeys Beyond is haunting. The game starts out with a lonely drive to a secluded mansion. This sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the game. Your job is to 'exorcise' three restless spirits that haunt the deserted mansion. You are given many unique tools to help you in your quest.

The game manages to scare the player without using blood or gore. Amber successfully captivated my imagination and used that to frighten me. This game is not for the weak at heart.

The only negative about the game is its brevity. I found myself wanting more stories at the end. The puzzles are well integrated and not too difficult. If you are looking for a good scare, try Amber: Journeys Beyond.

Excellent Game for the Price

When I bought this game it was still around $20, and I would have paid more.

It has beautiful graphics and ambient sound to make you wish you were really there. The graphics are actually better in the game than they appear on the box.

The story is set up well in the beginning, giving you a character to play who is actually involved in the story, not just an observer. The puzzles can be hard to solve, as solutions are not obvious and may take a stretch of the imagination. All of the characters you meet in the game have unique stories surrounding them - making them seem more like characters from a book.

The only disappointing thing about this game is that it ends too soon, without much of a finale.

Sudden ending surprised me!

This game is excellent. The graphics are great, the story is interesting, and the supernatural occurances are pleasantly creepy, as they should be. I really enjoyed playing. Some things you encounter in the game aren't really explained, which can be frustrating. Like the mysterious bathroom that's perpetually steamy, with messages appearing the the mirror. But that's not troubling. You "help" three ghosts, by solving what happened to them. With one of the ghosts, you end up going through this weird underwater rollercoaster thing that's submerged in the lake. It takes forever to solve, and can be pretty frustrating. Once you help all the ghosts, you're able to rescue your friend Roxy, and then the game is over just like that. I was surprised when it ended so abruptly. It's as if Roxy looks up and says, "Thanks for the help" and then the credits roll. I was hoping for a bit more wrap up and explanation of what was going on in the house. But beyond that, while it lasts, the game is spooky and interesting. Definitely worth the buck.

Pretty Good Game for the Price

I begin by saying, I purchased this game with mixed feelings. After reading all of the reviews, I was left feeling like this game would be a mixture of good and bad parts. After playing it I can honestly say that it is more good than bad. Yes, occasionally there are bad spots on the game, such as the hallways or the outside turning multicolor, but after you click through those and find your way forward, it usually clears up after one or two movements. I must agree with one reviewer who said this game needs more hints. I was stuck in one or two or three places trying to figure out something and would have to leave the game and come back a few hours later and suddenly it would make sense. The game begins with a very good story, but it does progress into a you must do this to progress to the next step game. For the money you will enjoy the puzzles and finding your way into the ghost realms and of course, back out again so that you can help Roxy. I gave this game four stars instead of five because occasionally the graphics are bad, otherwise it is an enjoyable game.

Not the greatest game...

For the price, it may be worth your time. The graphics are great, but the actual play is slow. When they say you have to pay attention to detail, they mean it...I would not hav ebeen able to get through this one without hints. It did not take very long at all to get through, and the story is just lame. If this cost more, I would say IT'S NOT WORTH IT!
