Fun at first, but a disappointment

This Nancy Drew game started out fun, and it was pretty good until the ending, which I think was the absolute worst ending in the whole series. There was nothing scary or clever about it, and it came much too quickly. Everything up until the ending was pretty fun, though... I was expecting it to be bad because of other reviews about it, but really the only horrible thing was the ending. If you are looking for a Nancy Drew game that shows HerInteractive at their best, I would suggest Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake or Secret of Shadow Ranch. I had fun with this one, but I do have all the other Nancy Drew games.

Way too short and repetitive!

The review by Bovey is spot-on! These games have gotten more boring as they go. The majority of this game is spent looking for the same shells over and over to make the same necklaces over and over....how much is enough? There was no real sense of scariness or danger... just boredom! And the game was so short... suddenly it ended! I am so disappointed in what these games have become. I loved The Final Scene, I even liked Blackmoor Manor even though I could never have finished it without consulting a walkthrough. This game was just lame. I don't recommend paying full price for it.

Disappointment

Both this game and Danger by Design were disappointing compared to some of the previous games (Shadow Ranch, the Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, Secret of the Old Clock, etc.). The game was short, and I thought the tasks were a bit dull. I also found it somewhat confusing switching between Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Hopefully Her Interactive will produce something better next time, because these games really are addictive, even for adults.

It's a dud.

My jaw dropped when I realized I was done with this game, it went so fast. There weren't nearly as many clues to find as some of the other games, and of the games that were set up within the mystery, most were not relevant to solving the case! This game is a let down in comparison to other Nancy Drew games.

The Creature of Kapu Cave

This is certainly one of the weakest games in the series. Since The Curse of Blackmoor Manor, which was heavily criticized for being too difficult, it seems that the designers at Her Interactive have decided to err in the other direction. The puzzles are overly easy, and require little or no deductive reasoning. They also tend to be centered on chores that you must complete to advance in the game, but that otherwise bring you no closer to solving the mystery. This becomes very tedious, very quickly.

The dialogue is limited and generally uninteresting, and, as in all the recent games, the game play is too short. Finally, despite the incessant talk about surfing and surfing lessons in the game, we are never given the opportunity hit the waves ourselves. Cruel joke, Her Interactive!

The graphics, however, are beautiful, as always.

Not The Best Nancy Drew In My Opinion, But...

I own all the Nancy Drew games, and have played most of them at least twice. I am a grandmother, so I am way older than 10, but as they say, 10 - ADULT. I just love adventure games, which is why I bought my first Nancy Drew game.

I think anyone who has played them all is going to have a favorite, and a not-favorite, and everything else is in between. For me, this is an in between.

This game has great graphics and an interesting storyline. It is too short. The first one I considered too short was #8, The Haunted Carousel. Very fun game, it was just too short.

Most of the Nancy Drew games have busy work in them (in fact, most adventure games do). I didn't mind the fishing or the necklace making. It's a diversion that gives me a chance to think about the actual quest of the game and how to achieve it. If you're good at it, you don't end up doing a lot of it anyway.

There has been busy work in some of the games that I wasn't good at, and that can be frustrating!! Sewing and playing miniature golf in "Secret of the Old Clock" were two activities in one game that I had trouble with, but after about three hours trying to sew that dress, I was finally on my way again.

I think "The Creature of Kapu Cave" was fairly easy. I can't think of anything about it that was too hard, including the "frass" stuff. I play all the games in Senior Detective mode, and I remember never having to go online or consulting a walkthrough in this game. (I usually have to look at a walkthrough at least once because I can't figure out how some puzzle is supposed to work, but not for this game.)

I can't remember how long it took me. I only play for three hours a week, and I think on the third Sunday I was done, so it must have been 7 or 8 hours. A really good one will take about 20 hours.

There are 2 levels of play in each Nancy Drew game. In fact, it seems as though the early games had 3 levels. If you think the games are too easy, and not long enough, play on Senior Detective level. In the last several games, at Senior level, there is no checklist and you get no hints. That will make the game last a lot longer, especially if you have never played it before. The only game I would NOT recommend playing on Senior level is "Curse of Blackmoor Manor" (my personal not-favorite). Actually, if you want a long, difficult, challenging Nancy Drew, buy that one!

My grown daughter and I have enjoyed doing all the Nancy Drew games! We're always amazed at the new challenges and clever mysteries. This latest one ended too soon.

Disappointed Long-Time Nancy Drew Fan...

Alright, so maybe my husband and I aren't exactly in the target audience for the Nancy Drew games, but nonetheless, we've enjoyed playing every single one of the previous thirteen releases. So, after waiting anxiously for their fourteenth, perhaps it goes without saying that I was extremely disheartened upon receiving it to discover that we can't play it. HER Interactive has decided apparently that they care more about Microsoft than their long-time customers and have chosen to support only Windows XP and Vista instead of any of the older operating systems. The company had a very unsatisfactory response to my dilemma, and so I'll be doubly careful next time to read the fine print of the system requirements.

hike and snorkel in Hawaii

I am a lover of all the Nancy drew games, some more than others. This latest of the series is a fresh assignment with fresh scenery and the nice twist is meeting Joe and Frank Hardy and being able to play as them as well as Nancy. As you progress in the game and call the boys at one point your phone will turn purple and you will be on the beach and suddenly you will be Joe instead of Nancy, whenever you need to swap back, call the other person up. If there is something you must complete before doing so, you will get a voice mail. This game was lots of fun, with the mini games and the snorkeling, fishing and jewelry making for cash. But I felt the game was a little shorter than most and the Hiking and snorkeling too repetitive. But luckily not quite as bad as the swimming in Danger by Design. I felt the culprit was not a surprise this time and the ending wasn't as challenging as the past puzzles, but perhaps I am just getting to used to the games. It is still lots of fun and a worthy buy though. And you get a sneak preview of 2007's White Wolf at Icicle Creek, the next of the series, can't wait! Already got my Canadian passport and faux fur coat and boots packed! Happy Sleuthing!!!

Short and sweet

This game was fairly simple and was fairly short. There were a lot of situations that could have been developed further, as though the story just hung on bits and pieces. Overall, however, it was fun, as all ND games are, and I think any ND fan will enjoy it--as long as you aren't expecting a huge challenge and a really long game!
