Modern Crusin' USA

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

I was a big fan of Crusin USA on N64, and this game is very similar but with a modern Fast and the Furious edge.

I changed the control to style #5 and used the nunchuck control stick to steer and the wiimote as the accelerator - hold it horizon towards the TV - like a car gas pedal pressed down (pedal to the metal). With the controller like this, I am able to have great control over the car and have a lot of fun racing.

With that said, there are many different cars with lots of upgrades and ways to customize the cars to your specific driving habits and look and style.

There are many fun races, some are too dark (as they take place at night) and it is hard to see the next turn, but most races are very fun. There are short cuts in the different races. Also there are several different types of races. One bad part is that towards the end of the game, every race ends in a police chase, but over time you get more experience at avoiding getting "busted".

Finally, the game has a 2-player racing mode which is a lot of fun.
For all of these reasons, I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of racing games.

Poor controls make this game a bust

I love the NFS franchise and enjoyed NFS Underground on the PC immensely. The Wii version of NFS Carbon is a beautiful game, but sorely lacking when it comes to controls. The wiimote just doesn't cut it. Having previously had a steering wheel with accelerator which have now beeen replaced by the wiimote - this game is just a sad imitation.

Meh.

This game is absolutely littered with ads! They are not only on the billboards you go by, you get "text messages" from T-Mobile. The story line is OK. The controls are clunky, unless you hold the A button while turning you won't be able to go around sharp curves (the oversteer control). If you turn the wheel too far while going around it will sometimes reset to 12 o'clock while your controller is still angled to turn. Without invoking the oversteer control the wheel will only turn from about 10-2 o'clock.

Great idea... HORRIBLE controls!

This game has really cool graphics and lots of custom cars. The controls work most of the time, but it tends to mess up on sharp turns. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it would not. Even on cars rated with great control the stearing would randomly go out causing me to crash head on into a wall.

This game is fun, but at most I would rent it because it just makes you mad when you would have won a race but lost because your stearing went out. I would wait a little bit until the game developers actually make a full racing game designed for the Wii. Need for Speeed Carbon was obviously a game designed for another system thown out to be a launch title to make a quick buck for Electronic Arts. The Wii controls are obviously tacked on and dont work as well as they could have had EA spent more time developing them.

So to sum up all of this, you will more than likely be really disapointed if you buy this due to the buggy controls. Wait another few months if you really do want to buy it and it will probably be in the bargain bin at walmart for $19.99.

You'll be hooked!

If you want a great racing game that makes great use of the "Wiimote", check "Carbon" out. It has a great story mode and the cars are fantastic. This is probably the best car line the NFS series has ever had. The graphics are really the only complaint I can possibly have but even those were surprisingly well done. I just can't stop playing this game, it's really on another level. I recommend it with full confidence that you'll have a great time. It's great for one on one gameplay.

Be patient with the controls!

We too had a difficult time with the controls on this game and like others have said, not all cars are created equal (like another reviewer, I find the Mazda's quite user friendly). We probably would have given this game one star too IF we hadn't found out that it's pretty easy to change the controls around. There is one that works GREAT and that is steering with the joystick on the nunchuck while just basically pointing the Wiimote at the screen (note: it's supposed to work like a gas pedal, if the Wii-mote is pointing up, then you're not giving it any gas, if you "step on it" the Wiimote will be pointing toward the screen and the car running at full throttle... just pull up a little bit if you want to slow down)... I found this configuration Very Cool and MUCH BETTER than steering with the Wiimote!! Pretty cool game overall... I would rent it again! I like the story mode and we also used it to race 2 player. I bet the Wii racing games will continue to improve!!

Great game, lots of fun.

I rented the game and then decided to buy it. I haven't been able to beat the kingpin yet, but I have had lots of fun working my way through the game. I really like the way the wii remote becomes a driving wheel, so much that I decided to disconnect my Xbox. I think the game is a bit too difficult toward the end, but it is still fun. If you look for Need for Speed cheats for Wii, then you can get what you need to get through almost everything. I plan to try and then buy other driving games from Electronic Arts. They did a really nice job and I am pretty picky when it comes to games because I don't have a lot of leisure time in my life.

I do want to warn women that the game assumes you are a man by presenting a video scene every so often (as the game progresses) where your ex-girlfriend shows up. I have seen nothing explicitly sexual so far, but there are some implications that your character was romantically involved with her.

For EA games, I would recommend designing a three setting choice, to widen your potential audience:
1. Story for people who'd date women
2. Story for people who'd date men
3. No story

After writing all that, I feel that I should add, as a heterosexual male, I was good with the story and thought it was a worthwhile addition.

Movie Like Racing Game with great graphics

I recently got this game as a gift. I opened it up and put it into the wii. After the game loaded, I started a new career. I had to watch a movie for about 10 minutes that set me up with the plot, then right from the movie, the camera zoomed in and I was driving. It was really cool. The graphics where very realistic. At times, I had a hard time telling if I was watching film or graphics. The controller was responsive and after about an hour, I got the hang of it. I really like this game because it feels like your in a 2Fast 2Furuous movie.

Great game controls arent hard to learn people

ok everyone has been saying the controls are hard and wont respond to some. Ok if you stop turning the remote like a mad man and just take a second to acually see how easy it is to turn then ur set. Plus the only some what annoying fact about the game are the muscle cars because they have poor handling so dont pick them easy as that. Helpful hint to some use your Speedbreaker people it works wonders on the turns and saving alot of frustration in the end. Anyways great game, get it, have fun
