Another solid party game from Nintendo

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

Mario Party 8 is, in most ways, very similar to its predecessors - a large amount of mini games, colorful graphics, a variety of boards, and a selection of Nintendo characters. Since this is the first installment on the Wii, the major difference in this version is the motion controls used on the boards and in mini games. Here's my personal list of pros and cons.

Pros:

1. boards have more variety, especially conditions on how to earn stars
2. high replay value, especially for families and casual gamers
3. use of the Wii's motion controls makes for a more interactive experience

Cons:

1. higher degree of luck, especially with the awarding of bonus stars
2. the party host and his talking hat are incredibly annoying
3. not all mini games use the motion controls

Overall, this is a solid party game. If you liked the previous Mario Party games, you'll like this one too.

Not Much of a Party

I have owned the very first Mario Party for Nintendo 64 and now that I have purchased Mario Party 8 and played it, it's a HUGE downgrade! In the first Mario Party you can purchase different trophies to gamble your coins, different blocks to use on the game boards, break records, etc. In Mario Party 8, there isn't much you can do beside play the board games, the mini games aren't much fun, some of the new characters are plain and no matter how good you do in the board games, you still get the same amount of carnival cards! The bottom line is, this game is boring and nothing compared to the first Mario Party!

Fun for family and friends

This is a game that I have enjoyed playing with friends and family. It is an easy game to understand. I have also enjoyed exploring the game on my own as well. At times the game can get a little repetitive especially if you are playing on your own. But as a game for more than one player I find it great fun. The mini games allow a range of skills to be needed and so therefore allows different people to win each time. You just need to have those 4 remotes to really max out the fun for all which of course is the down side. So for that and it being a little repetitive I have removed a star. But I would recommend as a good game to have!

Too tedious

Purchased this with expectations that the mini-games would be easy to get into and fun. After trying them out, I can only describe them as tedious. Every game seems to have 10 or so "intro" screens that you have to go through. To make matters worse, there are different ways to get through the intro screens. Some require pushing A, others you have to select options with the cursor then click A, others require jumping to get a random dice roll. Then getting into the game itself this type of tediousness continues all over again. This may be fun for some occasions, but I would recommend highly you try out the game before you buy.

Not as expected.

I was expecting this game to be exciting, fun and addicting.
But honestly, when I started playing I was so bored. The mini games are quick and not anything I wanted them to me. The whole "board game" part of the game bored me so bad.. when it wasn't my turn, I was trying to find something to do to make time go by faster. If you play with computers, it's impossible to get the stars.. and yeah, I think it's definitely more of a kids game. I think it would be a lot more fun when you aren't competing against the computers.

Best game for our four-year-old

This is the first Wii game we've gotten that really engaged our 4-year-old boy. Ultimately up to now he could care less about our other Wii titles such as Cars, Carnival Games, and Playground Games.

Our boy loves that he can play a lot of this out of the box. He can choose his character and move him around the board. Because the game leverages the Wii controller quite well he can get into the mini-games. The best feature is that you can practice each mini-game as much as you want, which is good because some of them take a few tries. The variety of games alone satisfies our short attention span family quite well. There is a train map that just hooked him big-time, so if you have a boy between the ages of 3-8 it will likely hook your boy too.

The professional reviewers have to be taken with a grain of salt. The comic-book-guy reviewers with lame beards and questionable hygiene are not going to like a game that a 4-year-old does. One reviewer noted that much of the game is left to chance instead of skill. This is actually a big plus for parents with small kids. I am hyper-competitive so it's not my first instinct to let the kid (or Wookie) win. But with this game my little boy came in second place on his own, so between the game itself and the adjustable difficulty levels, my kid can kick my butt at a much younger age, which keeps me in check!

Very Fun Family and Friend Game!

I have been playing this with my family a couple fo times a week, and it is a blast.

For those of you new to Mario Party, like I was, it is basically an animated board game style of play with mini games after each round. There are a few different boards to play on and tons of mini games that most any age can handle. My kindergartener has no problem competing against "normal" difficulty computer opponents, and easily beats the "easy" level in the mini games.

I fully recommend this for family entertainment. The only down side to it is the minimum number of turns is 10. For two players playing as a team against the computer, that means your game is going to be about 1 hour minimum. On the positive side, even my 6 year old does not get bored with it in that hour.

As an adult party game, it can be just as entertaining and very challanging. You will enjoy all the smack talking and strategy as you try to gather those stars. Just remember to never give up because you can spin around and win with just the right role or piece of candy.

Party time: Great, Alone time: Average

If you are playing with 1 or more firends this is an A+ game. There is a lot of text that is involved and no quick way to by-pass it (even on fast message speed) or eliminate it. It would have been nice for Nintendo to have a disable option or actually have the guy talk to you as other platforms do. When on a single player mission the play is the same but just not as fun. After unlocking the 2 hidden characters and buying the extra games there is really no lasting appeal. Over all a very nice game that can be enjoyed alone or with friends. I hope the newer version will support online play as some of the games are going that way.
