Somehow I think this is how Twisted Metal was meant to be all along. This game is dark, violent, and probably the best desturtion derby type game for the PS2. All the characters are escapees from an insane asylum, and of course Calypso is there to grant their fondest wish (usually for revenge), provided they kill everyone else in Car combat in a variety of arenas (City, drive-in theater, mountain pass, etc.). The video sequences/storylines are gory, violent, and some of them are truly horrific (Mr. Grimm's is particulary nasty). Take the "Mature" rating seriously.
great fun

wonderful little game, very dark but i like that.
the story lines are not the best but just twisted enough to make them a lot of fun....
the grapics are also top of the line and you have multi player co-op or deathmatch, loads of secrets to unlock so you will have a grand old time.
Slightly Disappointed

For the most part this game keeps you amused, has some killer combat options and has decent graphics, but one thing I did not like was how repetitive the atmosphere and dark enviornments were. At first the atmosphere of the game seemed big and impressive, but as you continue to play and after so many times of banging your truck against the exact same wall over and over, the game got lame.
This is my first Twisted Metal game out of the series and even though it has its strong points I don't think I will check out another Twisted Metal game in the series. Long time fans should definately not be let down with this one.
A fantastically entertaining game...

but definitely not for everyone!
As stated innumerable times in previous reviews, the graphics, gameplay, and atmosphere for this game are top-notch. There is a steep learning curve, but after logging hours developing some proficiency, you'll come to appreciate this game on a whole new level and find yourself playing it time and time again. While it's no "Gran Turismo 3" in regard to its driving physics, it's not meant to be. Twisted Metal Black is simply a rousing car combat game, and it succeeds brilliantly at this.
That said, my recommendation isn't unqualified. Twisted Metal definitely put the emphasis on "Twisted," and it is not appropriate for children. The "Insane Asylum" theme is apparent throughout as you're beat over the head with over-the-top violence and truly disturbing story elements, most of which involve the contestants seeking retribution for some past injustice (particularly in a bloody, painful way). Also, in light of recent tragic events, you should know that one of the battlegrounds takes place among towering, dark skyscrapers, one of which has the remnants of a (gulp) crashed commercial jetliner (note: the game came out well before the tragedy ever happened). There are also some pretty big leaps in storyline and logic (one of the contestants claims to like the police, yet has a police cruiser strapped to the front of her semi truck that she uses as a battering ram; there's also a child who "made this controller" to re-animate his murdered father); however, these are minor gripes for what is, at the end of the day, a fun and entertaining game set amidst a disturbing, dark backdrop.

Okay, this game is pretty good. I mean, when I first bought it, i was so excited, but when i got home and played, man it was fun. Then, 2 hours later, the game was boring. It was the same thing almost. Just hunting down cars. Also, the bosses were extremely hard. I meant they had shields and you had to shoot until the shield was gone and then kill the boss. So, if your thinking of buying this game, forget it(In my opinion. I don't care if you waste your money!)!!
A fun game for a while

I first played this game at my friends house just after it came out. I had been a big fan of the 1st 2 games and was highly anticipating this games release. I was amazed at how fun it was and how good the graphics were. So the next day i went and bought it. I quickly beat the game with every charecter and after that there really isnt anything to do and it has virtually no replay value. Using codes is really the only way to enjoy this game (unless u have minion) because it is unreasonably hard. I would srongly recommend renting it instead of a purchase.

Twisted Metal: Black may not be easy, not much in the way for cheats as compared to Twisted Metal 4 (including access to the bosses)
Do NOT buy for single-player

I'll say it right now, if you don't have a full multiplayer game going, this game will not be fun. The single player story missions are fine, but they're only for the story. Four player mayhem unloading arsenals upon each other is the fun stuff. The single player is just frustrating, all the other cars aim for you and the AI is unfair. They have an infinite number of their special weapons, meaning the second they cross you, it's gonna be hard to see where you're going in a second. The graphics are very good and the physics engine is fantastic, the environments are fun (although the collecting hidden tokens for unlockables is LAME), and the characters are diverse and all are fun to use in their own way. But again, absolutely not for single player.
