Not very good. Sort of vacant in places. Graphics are blocky. Dont judge a game by its cover. :)
Are we having fun yet??

This game simply stinks. The controls are terrible, the plot.. what plot? I got a couple hours into it, and had to stop, simply because my brain was shutting down to stop the pain. I can't believe a sequel was made....
Bottom line, if you enjoy playing games... avoid this one like the plague.
you like this game u half to play onimusha

This was the first game I've played in years. My friend lent me her copy when I finally bought a computer.
After a few hours I was completely hooked and played it non-stop for days. Then I went back and played it again to complete all the subquests. Yes, the combat could be a bit boring, perhaps because I had it on auto-chaining. And Joseph did look somewhat cadaverous. But the graphics were amazing, the load times were no problem at all, and I loved the story.
The water around the Temple of Urath, the music in Iona near the end, and the falling snow were particularly beautiful. The Caverns of Wolong are incredible and have the most haunting music, but you have to spend a lot of time in there before you stop getting lost. The first few acts in Lenele have a powerful sense of impending danger.
I read some of these reviews and bought games like Baldur's Gate that everyone is raving about. I just don't get it. The graphics were gloomy and flat, the characters whine when you move them, and they all get stuck in rooms and can't move around each other. I spent so much time reorganizing my characters so that they could all get up various staircases that I gave up. How can you say this game is better than Summoner?

This games graphics are awesome, but the one thing I hate about it is the way the dialogue is. It is in light blue in a dark blue box, and I can't see it for the life of me! I play in a bright room too! I haven't gotten very far, but the game hasn't inspired me to do it. A real disappointment.
Enjoyable game in the beginning, load times kill it.

This was one of the first games I had for PS2. In the beginning it was fun and I really didn't mind the now tedious load times. But after running back and forth from city to city and going between zones in the castle, I couldn't bear to play the game any more. The game needs to load: 1) when entering battle (from the world map), 2) when leaving a city and going to the world map, 3) when entering a city from the world map, and 4) sometimes in the cities and dungeons between zones. As I said, in the beginning it doesn't really bother you, but when you're looking for a certain person and can't remember which city they're in or which zone of the castle they're in, it gets frustrating watching the game load constantly.
The long and the short: should you buy this game?

"Yes," if:
-- you enjoy long, deep RPGs with a lot of side quests: you get your first side-quest during the tutorial section, and most of the side quests lead to unique acquisitions or plot twists that add dimension to the story. Additionally, the game tracks the quests for you in a journal--no more jotting down notes about what you have to do next.
-- you prefer to strategize rather than button-mash in combat: Summoner has some great options for interactive combat, but you don't generally have to go insane on your controller to keep up with what's coming at you. You pick which character you want to play in combat (you can switch to any conscious character any time) and the others will follow the general instructions you give them. In most cases, I stuck with Flece or Jekhar and let Joseph and Rosalind do a lot of healing. A LOT of healing.
-- it's more important to you that your characters have personalities than overwhelming stats or good looks.
"No," if:
-- you're more into action than strategy.
-- you're put off by long (and I mean long) load times.
-- you're an unforgiving graphics snob (not intended as an insult) who is distracted by artifacting and visible polygon draws.
The characters in Summoner are uniformly ugly--they have their distinct looks, but they tend to look like walking corpses (particularly Joseph). This didn't bother me much, but in the wake of so many pretty games with pretty characters, a lot of people might be put off by this. Personally, I think Joseph looks kinda stressed, which is appropriate to the story.
The story takes a bit of time to get going: the first time I fired this game up, I got so lost in the huge cityscape of Lenele that I went back and started over again. But about a third of the way through the story, something happened that really hooked me: a story event followed by a shift in focus--suddenly, the stakes had changed and things were no longer what they appeared.
The combat system is cool, and chain attacks combined with reasonably good combat AI for your party make the battles pretty interesting. The enemy AI isn't always so bright, though: it's possible to get an enemy to chase one character exclusively while the others whittle away at it--I beat quite a few bosses this way, even close to the end of the game.
If you're big into story in your RPGs, this is a good choice--play time approaches 35 hours. And if the side-quest bug gets you, you may find yourself playing through the game 3, 4 or 5 times, trying to complete them all. If half-stars were possible, I'd go 4.5...the only thing I really didn't like about the game was all the loading.
Oh, and push the X button during the credits for a few nice surprises.
lotsa hype but not lotsa fun

I was impressed with how smoothly the 3 dimensional areas flowed on to the screen and how many sub quests were available. However
the game kind of fights for you normaly and you can set the chains on automatic so it will completely fight for you which takes all the fun out of the game.

it was a good game overall i was a little disapointed in the play.. to many cut fight sceens during your walk from city to city...the characters were good but i felt the graphics could of been a little more in depth, especially for the p.s.2 system...it will be interesting to see the second game in the series..hopefully they can make the play more detailed and clear up some of the graphics..
WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!

I thought I would give this game a chance because of some of the more positive reviews people wrote on it, BIG MISTAKE! I like these types of games, but this one is just down right boring and I wasn't pleased with graphics of this game either. So don't make the same mistake I did and buy this game.
