I'm not all that impressed with Summoner. I was all hyped about playing the game after reading the back of the case. The story line really did sound intriguing. But you know what? Every time I find something redeeming about the game, I find something else that kills it.
First off, there is this ungodly long load time between portions of cities and maps. In the time it took me to load from the Crown District to the market place in Lenele I had made myself crackers and cheese and still had time to spare. Of course, I do like the fighting system. But then in a battle I can't really get the camera angles to change so I get frustrated. Let's not even get into the graphics...I think with the story line of this game, and its certain drawbacks, better graphics could have saved it.
Anyways, this game is neither good nor bad.

I loved this game. Initially the graphics disappointed me but the game is heavy on mood and story and that is what makes a good RPG. RPGs are meant to have a certain length to them and this one delivers in spades. By the end you really feel as if you have taken an epic journey. It makes me wonder how much better games will be down the road when the technology catches up with the storylines and produces games that are as visually attractive as they are imaginative. This one is very imaginative but the graphics are primitive by todays gaming standards. That has generally been a problem with all RPGs. They take so much longer to produce than an FPS or adventure game that the graphics are never as good.
If you don't mind the graphics and like a true RPG this is your game!

I must admit I was a little dissapointed, when I saw all the reading one has to do in this game. However, It is a very colorful game with a lot to offer. There is also the occasional full-motion video with character voice overs to keep your interest. The gameplay is very smooth, and you are able to switch characters on the fly. I have just completed the game, and I spent almost 50 hours to make it to the ending. This is a very involved game, and it can be extremely addictive! One could complete this game in about 30 hours or less, if you ignore a lot of the side quests. But the side quests are were you get a lot of the best weapons and armor in the game! Every time a character levels up, you get skill points to distribute for that character. These points can be used to increase spell knowledge, weapon ability, magic resistance, etc... Hint: Increase Heal spell to get Vitalize (heals party), and Holy spell to get Protect and Faith (gives party resistance to physical and magic attacks) Don't buy the official guide for this game, because everything you could possible ask is on Volition's Website... If you don't want spoilers, use the "search" feature on their website to search for only what you need help with. Just one more thing: save your game frequently. I can't stress that enough.
This game keeps you interested

After reading through some of the reviews of this game it looks like some people disliked the fact that it has a large number of mini-quest that you can complete. Personaly I think that this is what make Summoner a good game. I think that the longer it takes to complete a game the better. This game allows you to take your time and try to complete every mini-quest or to just concentrate on the main quest, which will still take you a while to complete. I usually get bored with role playing games after a few hours of play because they don't keep you involved in the game. In my opinion summoners many quest and overall style of game play help keep the game exciting even after hours of playing. The game does have a few bugs but nothing to big in my opinion. Overall I think this is a great game for those looking for a little more action than the average RPG.
Sub par graphics.... just to start

All I have to say about this game is that it was one of the most dissapointing purchases I have ever made. It is a rip off of diablo and a poor one at that. This game does not fullfill the graphics potential playstation 2 has to offer. Wait for Final Fantasy.
I would rather play pac-man

I gave this game my very best attention span I could muster, and I am pretty easily entertained. I thought the story line was very good and there were some original ideas. However the play was so slow -- this game is not for impatient people who like to move quickly around. The graphics were like PS1. I would caution you to rent this before you buy it.
Kinda slow & .....

I just can't beleive the game doesn't let the characters talk, it's all reading and very (1 at a time) slow fighting scenes. Is this game always in the tutorial mode? Because I can't seem to get out of it...... The game seems like it has possibilities, but it just doesn't do it for me. Am I doing something wrong in the setup? I don't think so..... and If I am, LMK because this game might as well be the Parasite Eve of PS2.... I was disappointed when the characters weren't capable of talking. That takes away the emotion.....
It is just a game!

Come on. This game has recieved some good reviews. My review is aimed at those of you who are complaining about this game being terrible. Wake up, do you realize the work required to get this game out? Take a look at the credits at the title screen. While listening to the cool music take a look at the programer's and writer's thanks. They put a lot of time into this game and it shows. Any one out there ever read Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings"? The mythology of Summoner took some thought to create. The story is intrigueing if you like Mythological RPG's, if not, why did you play this game? I for one do not like RPG's that have characters that look like cartoons, that is why I DON'T play them and write reviews about them. I am at the last boss of the game and have been playing about 27 hours. Well worth the $50 bucks I paid for the game. I can't say that even about Onimusha Warlords, a cool but very SHORT game. Summoner kept me enthrawled throughout and I will definitely play through this again. Sure it has draw-ins and more than a few bugs. So what! This is only a game. These two negatives did not keep me from playing through this game. In fact I rarely was plagued by these small annoyances. I am writing this review mainly to spur some intrest in the many out there who have yet to get thier hands on a PS2 and a copy of Summoner. I also want THQ to know, that their research, creativity, and dedication to finish this long quest is much apreciated by this gamer. Thanks.
A good quality, but pedestrian, RPG. Not for the devoted.

"Summoner" is your average, run of the mill RPG that will please some and totally put off others. Seasoned RPG fans might want to pass on this title, since it pales when compared to any "Final Fantasy" game, or even other PS2 RPGs like "ICO" and "Drakan: The Ancients' Gate". For people new to RPGs, this is a pretty good start.
The story is nicely put together, and fairly easy to follow. It has a few original elements to it, giving this game some credability. The combat system takes some getting used to, but becomes sencond nature after a while. Magic plays the biggest rols in "Summoner", aand you have a wide variety of spells to choose from. As you progress, you learn more skills, gain more experience, and obtain better weapons. There are times when this game reminds me of "Suikoden", more in style than setup.
In the visual department, this is a pretty well done game. The animation is nice and fluid, and the textures and colors make "Summoner" a visually pleasing experience. There are a few glitches, which might be annoying to some, maybe not even noticed by others. The camera is a bit dodgy at times, and I often found myself struggling to get a good angle. The music is average, nothing memorable, but not unappealing.
My beef with this game is the lack of a good in-game map. I have gotten lost so many times, and have struggled to get back on track. This adds time to the game, but not time you spend enjoying the game. This is a flaw that might make you give up on "Summoner". Overall, this is nothing special. But it is enjoyable enough for me to stay interested until the end, so I guess that's saying something.
Interesting Storyline, not impressive graphics

First of all, I was expecting more for a PS2 game in terms of graphics.
The Good: The characters do have some interesting "feel & look". The environment is usually nice with rendered images. The storyline is okay. You can have multiple sub quest leading you into a non-so-much linear game.
The Bad: Not much FMV's (a still picture that moves is not FMV for me). The 3D rendering has major problems rendering buildings that are far away; in that regards, you see the background picture and then the far buildings start to pop in; looks really bad.
Bottom line, it does have a good storyline, so far, and the fact of have multiple sub quests is cool as well. It will attract some gamers until a real complete adventure game comes in on the PS2
