The most horrifying entertainment experiance ever

The title may not seem right at first, as there are certainly other works in a whole range of mediums. For a video game example look at the remake of resident evil. That game features a ever present enemy which cannot be killed, zombie which come back stronger, and other frightening creatures which jump out at you. By contrast the initial hour or so of this game may seem boring. But sooner or later you start to notice how uneasy you've become. You'll have your heartbroken, and then be forced to watch it happen again. You will question the reality of the game, and ultimately you own. This game grows on you long after your finished playing. It's in these questions that the strongest horror comes.

Also this game is one of the most interesting to disect, almost every object, enviroment and creature serves as an alegory. Add an eleborate set of allusions to other interesting works (david lynch, jacob's ladder, house of leaves, etc.) and you find yourself not only a gamer, but a investigator into a mystery. good luck

The BEST one out there!

Silent Hill 2 is, by far, the best silent hill ever! As James
Sunderland you must return to the resort town in hopes of finding your "dead" wife, who sent a letter saying that she would be waiting for you in the dark town. This right away captured my interest because this game had all the signs of a good horror film plot, and I wasn't let down! This had been my first Silent Hill game to ever play, and when I saw the first monster in town I was freaked out!On his scary trip James meets several mysterious characters, including a shadowy girl named Angela in the cemetary, a guy in the apartments named Eddy who appears like he is running away from something, and Maria, a stripper who looks almost exactly like James' late wife (she was th most baffling character too!) Also this game has absolutly beautiful graphics and some of the most horrifying mosters around, including an invicible monster by the name of Pyramid Head who seems to really want James dead. Don't hesitate to buy this one!!

From Subtlty Spooky To Gory Mayhem And Back Around

Like a cross between "Hellraiser" and "Night Of The Living Dead" transfered into a video game, "Silent Hill 2" is one of the best examples of the horror game genre. There is a town, apparantly previously very idyllic but now shrouded in fog and filled with strange noises from far off that may be just tricks of the wind or may be something else, called Silent Hill, to which a number of distressed people have been drawn. In the main scenario the player takes the role of 'James', although there is a shorter 'subscenario' game where you can play the 'Maria' character, and in both the player doesn't know the full background of their character and discovers it more as they go along, and it's equally interesting to learn more about the secrets of the other individuals who've come to this deserted town, that you encounter along the way. The game plays it smart by not starting off in the middle of all-out carnage, but building up towards the appearances of the first hellish figures in the fog.

Lots of bloody action as you progress into the game, but the key to this is to not rush through madly trying to get to the end. Taking time to explore is well worth the time, not just in finding stuff that helps you towards your goals, but in enjoying the eerie, reality-altering scenarios that have been created. It would be possible to ignore parts of the mystery and still get through to the final battle, but you'd be missing so much that way. The paintings, for example...take the time to really look at the paintings on the wall if you want to experience the full disturbing fright of the game. And in reading the books and papers you come across, it's so much more rewarding to not just scan for clues on how to beat the next monster, but to try and figure out the secrets of the town. "Silent Hill 2" leaves alot open to interpretation, and those interpretations can be pretty bizarre.

A great, quite challenging game with multiple endings and, apparantly, alot of stuff hidden in each trip through that's quite hard to find, so it holds up well for more than one playthrough. Helped alot by thorough characterization, and gives you motivation to really want to fight your way through the monstrous hordes to help some of the other characters you come across.

What happened to Harry?

The second trip. This one was quite a change a change of pace after the first trip. I approve of the graphical update. It's nice that you can see the enemies for what they are; however, I still prefer SH 1 and the lo-res graphics. The graphics kept you guessing as to what the creatures were (not that I'm saying I can tell what the creatures were in this game). The second game does not concern itself with the struggle of Harry Mason; instead, we get to know a man by the name James Sunderland. He is quite different than Harry as is his story. He IS searching for someone in the godforsaken town. It is his wife who was supposed to have died years before. The gameplay is mostly the same. I appreciate that the protagonist now looks at items that are in the immediate vicinity. It is a huge help. The weapons remain the same, as do the healing items. Plenty of endings to this game (more than the first). Play it whether you played the first or not. You get more of the town's history.

An Artistic Masterpiece

Silent Hill 2 is one of the few video games I've ever played that qualifies as an artistic masterpiece. The horror in this game comes not so much from the monsters, but from the psychological depth of its story; it deals with genuinely mature subject matter in a fashion no other console title ever has (with particular inspiration from David Lynch-- the plot owes a great deal to "Lost Highway"). The atmosphere is consistently unsettling, and the cut scenes are the best I've seen since Diablo II (and far better integrated into the game). It's also a nice change to be able to avoid fighting instead of spending all your time bashing the zombies, and the adjustable difficulty settings add to the replay value. (And contrary to what some others may say, the voice acting is generally very good.) But Silent Hill 2's greatest achievement is the way it gets under your skin, the way its eerie, ever-changing world mirrors the mental unraveling of its characters, and the way James Sunderland's sad story proves both moving and deeply disturbing. Most games are simply entertaining diversions with a plot tacked on; Silent Hill 2 is a powerful story that just happens to be a game.

Ive only had this game for two days but I have to say Konami did a great job putting this together. The starting of the game isnt as scary as the first but when you get further into the game it grows on you and you might not play with the lights off anymore(like I did). I cant even think of one flaw in the game yet . So that means this game must be pretty good. I only have one bit of advice for all you gamers out there . BUY THIS GAME!

Gruesome to the max

Silent Hill does develop an interesting story but it is spooky and gruesome to the max. Dispatching the living dead is a bloody mess and could give a person nightmares for a week. There was no excuse for the slow movement of the main character and difficulty in guiding him. The puzzles are challenging but the search for items in dark, decaying hotel mazes tried my patience in the end. I wouldn't attempt this game without a strategy guide.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this game. The graphics in the beginning didn't seem that great- especially for the PS2. However- great graphics or not, I was blown away by the mystery behind Silent Hill. This isn't one of your bubble gum games that you buy when all of your friends buy it. It is a depressing and grotesque tour about a man who returns to Silent Hill in search of his wife (receiving a letter from her), who actually died a year before. This is strange and he finds Silent Hill to be not like the place he visited once with his wife while they were taking a vacation there. Silent Hill is now a gloomy, run down, ghost town. Strange is the place- as well as the people you meet there. If you like movies like Jacob's Ladder - you'll love this game.

Silencing the evil resident

I rented this just the other day, intentionally along with Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, since I had never played it and had only played the latter on Dreamcast. I started out with R.E. and was impressed with the cinema intro along with the improved graphics altogether. As I got further into it, I thought it was fun. Then I put on Silent Hill 2. I hated it. I got to the part where those creatures were roaming around the street and couldn't see past that. It looked boring. So I turned it off and put R.E. back on, playing it up until I couldn't find any more clues. So I temporarily gave up and decided to give Silent Hill 2 another shot. As soon as I got the key to those twin apartments, the game started taking off. Looking around that place pretty soon freaked me out! The music kept getting louder at some parts, I got nervous before entering any room in those dark halls, the footsteps of nearby enemies, the dead guy watching television... It kept me at the edge of my seat for hours. Way better than Resident Evil, apologies to the fans, but I think so anyway. Resident Evil is too "in your face", as Silent Hill 2 is weirder, smarter.
