Great Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

I've been waiting for a game like this. One that would redefine the First Person Shooter. I haven't played an original FPS since I picked up "Thief: The Dark Project" a few years back. The genre hasn't changed all that much except cosmetically. They've made the games prettier, not better. Red Faction was able to introduce a new concept to the genre, one that has long been missed.

I was skeptical about this game. So like any good skeptic, I rented it first and let my pessimism do the gaming. First thing I noticed - I hated the controls. I know that for the new generation FPS games it's essential to look up, down, around, and a little to the left and up about a foot to see the mutant with the rocket launcher. But I hated the controls at first. Using two independent control sticks warped my mind in an unimaginable way. Then, I learned the curve. The controls take some getting used to for those like me who aren't use to them. But by now, moving around and looking has become second-nature and it's just as easy as any other game.

Graphics are good. Not Metal Gear Solid 2 good, but they're better than PSOne graphics and much better than the "Super Nintendo" graphics that one reviewer claimed - put down Half-Life and find something else to do. There are other games out there and they don't all rely on pretty pictures. Graphics don't always make the game. Red Faction may have sacrificed graphics a little for the sake of the memory chomping Geo Mod tech. In which case - it was a good trade off.

Next thing I noticed - enemies [stink]. The AI is alright, it's just these guards really [stink]. They're insulting, they're mean, and they always have cooler weapons. Lucky for me, I get to steal those weapons.

Then I found the wonders of Geo Mod technology, and I was hooked. If you haven't seen it in action - you don't know what you're missing. You can blow up walls, blow up towers, blow up people on the towers, whatever you like. When you have a full rocket launcher you'll actually be thinking of ways to use the Geo Mod technology to kill enemies. There is a major downside though. Originally, you wanted to blow a door off its hinges with that rocket launcher. Now that you can, the doors are made of reinforced metal. Thankfully - the walls are not.

Finally came the plot. The plot is pretty simple to start with. And at the beginning Red Faction looks like it may have less plot than "Doom & Doom 2". It gets a little more complicated later on, but there's no major plot twists. Believe me, when you're playing this game you wont be paying a bit of attention to the plot. Certain things do advance the plot. You have people contacting you every once in a while to tell you what's going on. But what's more helpful is that they tell you where to go and what to do when you get there.

The inclusion of multiple vehicles increase the playability, and learning to use them effectively adds to the challenge. The vehicles are great: driller, submarine, an air vehicle, an ATV, and something resembling a tank. Although slow, the driller is fun because it's a moving Geo Mod-ifier. You can drill through walls, enemies, and just about anything else stupid enough to stand in front of you. Try not to back track in it though, I got stuck in a pool of water. The aircraft and the sub are pretty simillar. You'd swear the sub was just the aircraft in water. The ATV is fun, but slow, and you can only use the gun if someone else is driving. The tank-like vehicle is alright, it's got armor and okay weapons but the level you primarily use it in times you, so you have to hurry through it instead of having fun.

Does Geo Mod technology get old after a while? Let me put it this way. When you've loaded up your Game Shark with the infinite ammo code, grabbed a rocket launcher and become a real miner by tunneling through a level (door? we don't need no stinking door!), then it gets a little old. I'm not kidding you, in one level I started tunneling through a wall with a rocket launcher and ten minutes later I'm saying "it's gotta end somewhere". Luckily, all of the areas are relatively connected, so if you do decide to go rocket launcher happy, you'll eventually tunnel out somewhere else in the level. I know in one level I found myself in a larger cavern and actually said "Now where the heck am I?" To tell the truth, I've never seen that part of the level since and I don't know how to get there.

In short, the game is worth a shot - and well worth the money. Those giving Red Faction one star probably haven't given the game much thought, they just rated the game based on it not being Half-Life. Like I said before, there are other games out there.

Red Faction is a breath of fresh air to the repeatetive FPS genre. But don't just go on my word. Rent the game, try it yourself, then if you like it - buy it.

I've been looking forward to getting this game since I first heard word of it. And now that I have it...WOW. Fantastic graphics, great music and sound effects, amazing gameplay, and who can forget the oh-so-fun Geo-Mod technology! All these qualities add up to Red Faction, a must-buy game for any PS2 owner.

I read some reviews of Red Faction the day it came out and heard a couple of negative things but many positive things about it. I was going to rent the ...[game] but I just decided to take a risk and just buy it. Now I can say it's been one of the best 50 bucks I've spent in a long time. The Geo-Mod technology is, at least, a whole new invention to the FPS genre of games. I'm hoping many upcoming games take notice to the Geo-Mod technology and improve on it. Now, the reviews have been correct by mentioning some lack of Geo-Mod areas in the game. I do agree with this statement because I cannot get enough of blowing walls apart, but when you look at it, this game is the ONLY time you can even use Geo-Mod. The gameplay is as high caliber as Half-Life's single player was so when the environment ISN'T geo-mod capable, you are basically playing a better looking Half-Life. Multiplayer is a tad lame with deathmatch only. It does include bots and a whole lot of the levels have Geo-Mod technology. Now, there is a small issue with massive use of Geo-Mod. FPS will lag up when tons of new faces are created in the environment (when you blow lots of stuff up). Otherwise, it runs at a constant 30-60 FPS. There are so many good things about this game, it's hard to find enough bad things to warn you of. Just click 'add to cart' and relax while you become part of the Red Faction.

WOOOO HOOOO Fun times for everyone!!

Let's raise your hand in the air and shoot the walls like you just don't care....what an excellent game. I've only had the game for 2 days, but I am deeply impressed. I had a hard time convising myself that platform video game machines wouldn't be all that fun seeing how you don't have a key board or mouse...but the PS2's controller works great, plus with the added vibration (Dual shock mode) gives in that little bit of realism (especially when you are firing your automatic weapons....

The Geo-Mod is great also...I was amazed that this little differnce in the game play would go so far. Now I will not ever be trapped in room, need a door? One door coming up...

The graphics are great (in my opinion)...the game play is fun and the science fiction story line is great....

One of the best games out for the PS2, finally a game that you can brag about for your PS2!

BUY THIS GAME!

One of the best PS2 games out there!

This game RULES! It is one of the BEST first person shooters since the PC game Half-Life. The new Geo-Mod technology is so cool. Door locked? Jammed? Pick up your rocket launcher and blow a hole through the wall and go around! Huge tank on a bridge shooting at you? Don't waste your ammo trying to blow it up, just shoot a few rockets or toss a few gernades on the bridge to destroy the bridge! The tank will fall into the abyss! You can basically go ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING!

The story is average. You are Parker a slave who works in the mines all day. Then, there is a revolt and you escape. But, in a first person shooter who cares about a good story anyway?

Another cool thing about this game is all the vehicles you can pilot. Almost all of the ones you see, you can drive. Submarines, Air-Vehicles, Cars with turrets on them, and A huge driller are just a few of the many vehicles you can drive. THQ did a good job with this game and I enjoyed it. It doesn't take that long to beat, but it rules! Buy this game if you want a great time!

The best PS2 game out there right now.....

Ignore anyone that says this is not one of the best games they've ever played. By far, this is the most impressive first-person shooter on the market right now, and that's saying a lot. Though there are many other action games for the PS2 right now, this one is unparalled because of several aspects:

1) The first-person viewpoint gives the gamer a feeling that he/she is more in control of the atmosphere. The gameplay is not as sporadic and luck-based as games such as Winback and X-Squad.

2) The Geo-Mod Technology is simply amazing. You can blast holes through basically any wall or door, which adds an element of surprise and danger to the game. At any second, enemies might burst through walls from adjoining rooms, and blast your character.

3) The multiplayer games are very cool. You can add bots, like in Perfect Dark, and spar with your friends. Very cool...

Simply put, developers will be hard-pressed to meet the standards set by this amazing game. It is easily the best game currently available.

Disapointing

This game was a BIG disapointment for me! First, the GEOMOD system is pure non-sense. There are a few places you can blow through, especially at the start, but for the most part, it plays no role in the game. Disregard that "Can't find the key create your own door ...," garbage on the back. Also, the game has horrible, unpolished stealth missions where the gaurds seem to have a random field of vision and it is impossible to sneak the entire way through them. Not that it's a big deal for me, my favorite game is Xenogears, but the graphics are pretty bad in some spots, and especially during the cut scenes, and the acting is comparable to Resident Evil, lol. The game also gets rediculously hard towards the end. There is this one part where there is this series of long hallways with very high sealings, and gaurds at the end with guns that kill you in one hit, and a giant flying machine with vey heavy machine guns flying at you. All in all, I would save my money, and rent this game.

Not bad, but not great

After much hype, I was expecting an *awesome* game. Well, it's pretty good, but not "creepy/intense" good. The graphics are great, but the sound is mediocre. In the "story" mode, the game is fun, but not edge-of-your-seat gaming. I mean, after 5 minutes into the story mode, I already had 6 different guns, including a machine gun & flamethrower.

In multiplayer mode, again good but not great. With the split screen, all bots look roughly the same, including your human counterpart/partner. Which means it's darn near impossible to keep from shooting him, if you're trying to play cooperative.

Overall, I thought "Medal of Honor" was a much better FPS.

All I can say is WOW...

When I first bought this game about a week ago, I was a little skeptical. I thought it was going to be the same ol' run down the hall, kill a guy, run a little more, kill some more. But in the long run I found that there was much more to this one than that. For those of you who have never played a FPS (that's short for first person shooter), this is the one that will get you started on them. Let me tell you a little about this in my own words...

BAMMO!!!! This game rocks. I just beat it last night and was impressed the whole way through. It's long enough, the enemies steadily get stronger, the weapons are cool, and fairly realistic. Not in the sense that some of those guns could exist (like the Railgun), but there are some that aren't too far from reality. The Geo mod technology is what really took me though. You can batter your way through pretty much any wall, structure, building, or trooper in the game. And most of the time you'll end up somewhere cool (like a weapons cache). The damage is also randomized to some extent, so no two explosions, or that damage, will ever look the same. Enemies are also really well done. Each one reacts in his own special way to an attack, an ambush, or some other wicked way to annihilate them. Sometimes you'll hear things from down the hall as one of them taunts you to come out like " Protest THIS miner!!! " If you shoot the hand their gun is in, they'll run and hide, screaming the whole way that they're too young to die. The bosses are few and far between, but they're very challenging. I won't tell you any more than that, but they did all right in the boss area too. For those of you who have played games like Half Life and Gunman Chronicles, you'll see the same type of game play for Red Faction. The game is a story, and is divided into several sections. Not levels like with early FPS. But you'll enter an area, and once you make it so far, the game will automatically load the next area. It's progressive like that. There are also several different places that you can take to get to your objectives too. Many of the areas have hidden paths that you can blow through walls to find. The most obvious path isn't always the best one. There are some parts of the game where stealth is necessary rather than sheer firepower. Sometimes you'll even have to walk around without your gun drawn to make it through high security areas. That can make for a challenge. Physics was thought a lot of in the game. Like during the times you have to be stealth, you have to leave all your BIG guns behind and take only a pistol, because "the other guns will be too obvious". THAT makes it a real challenge. You'll also meet up with others along the way that are willing to fight with you. They'll pass along information and hints as you go along. The story all in all is pretty deep. Along the way, more and more problems will arise, and you'll have to take them one at a time. So it can get involved sometimes. However, with all the stuff going on in the game, you rarely have to backtrack or anything. Most of the time you can keep on running and never have to look back.

All in all, the game was great. I give it a mad high five stars. The game truly struck me as ONE of the first games to start taking advantage of the PS2 engine. I hope that you all enojoy it as much as I have...
