There haven't been many good games for the playstation 2 yet..except ssx and timesplitters of course. If your looking for a game to show of your ps2's graphics, look elswhere...but if your looking for a fun game, and don't want to wait till march for all the good games like The Bouncer to come out, get this game. Although the graphics aren't that much better than the PS1's, and it could easily be mistaken for a nintendo 64 game, the levels are huge and the gameplay is fun. The fighting is really cool..a very unique blend of guns and fists. If your looking for a fun game, and don't care about looks, this is for you.
Fun game, but you can wait for Oni 2!

I'm editing my review (...).
The review as originally written is still below. However, I want to state for the record that I am a huge Bungie fan, and Halo is awesome. I am just dissapointed in Oni, plain and simple. Oni could have been a masterpiece, and it may be one yet. However, it isn't one now. It is fun, but there are better, richer, more intuitive games out there like Halo. Oni has an extremely promising future, and I probably will buy Oni 2, because Bungie is fantastic, and Oni is unique. We'll see...
Original Review:
This game could have been great. The character design, unique use of hand-to-hand and first person shooter combat, and the old Marathon style gameplay has so much potential. Yet, it falls a bit short. The missions are too simple. The levels seem a bit devoid of character (there's not enough detail). Sometimes it takes a bit too long to get through a level, because of the order you kill people in, etc. This would not be a problem if it was fun going back through a level, but the levels just aren't that pretty or exciting. We can only hope Halo is better, but it will probably only be on the Xbox and PC. Hmmmm. Oh well.
Fun for awhile. ....

I was really looking forward to this one.. Quite different than I thought It would be. I Pictured a cartoon type atmosphere from the pics of reviews , only to realize they were shots from the opening movie sequence..
Dont get Me wrong the graphics are sharp, but there are 2 major factors to the game that i did not like..
Detail & Control
It does not have all that much detail. certain rooms are in desperate need of a window or something to look at.It falls short in this area, Some background graphics are blocked and not rounded in detail. Also when you stand on any object or platform near the edge you can see your feet are not on the platform.. for those of you who look at that sort of thing..
I am not a fan of tomb raider, This reminds Me of tomb raider alot.. long boring levels.. with no action..
I Must say I do not like the 4 contoller configurations they offer..
I Love the way the contol set up is on 007 on the N-64, And Medal of honor 1 & 2 on the p.s.x. Other companies should do that same format.
The control on oni is very hard to get used to, but it does take full advantage of the controller capabilities using the R-1 / R-3 Buttons...
Over all I would rent this if I were you , I am gonna sell mine on e-bay..

All the 7/10 reviews that I've seen made me more surprised with this game. I would give more like a 9/10 for the PS2 edition. It brings an interesting concept with many new features, merging Tomb Raider with a fighting game while keeping the anime style. Graphics are nice, not overwhelming, but appropriate. The game serves it's purpose, it's fun!
Imagine being able to do some kick-... kickboxing while desarming your opponent, taking his gun, and using it to finish the rest. She even have a few insults in bank for them! You learn moves as you go further in the game, as well as obviously finding new guns.
Ah, the so called weird controls... Yes, it's definitely different since they even found a good use for BOTH analog stick (pretty uncommon). Then again, you don't have a keyboard with ALT and CTRL either so they had to find something. All in all, I do not find that an issue but rather a challenge that can be overcomed quickly by practicing.
The difficulty of the game (easy, medium, hard) is well-balanced and should appease everybody.
This game is definitely something worth looking into on the PS2 at the moment.
Disapointing

Oni did not live up to the hype. The graphics were dark, you can only carry one weapon, and the controls will cause you to go crazy or just cause you to return the game. Worst of all, the levels are just not that interesting.
This is a fun game!!

I have spent a whole lot of quality time with ONI over the weekend, and I have come to the conclusion.....I love this game!!
ONI's gameplay reminds me of a cross between Fighting Force and Metal Gear Solid (Two games which I love). The graphics are great, and the levels are huge. Oni has quite a few moves which are fun to use while fighting. The weapon selection is very cool too, (especially with the force feedback on.) The challenges at the end the first two levels were nicely done. (I can't wait to see what else is in store for me on the later levels.)
The only drawbacks to ONI is the sound, which seems to get disjointed at times when the characters are talking. This can be somewhat annoying at times, but fortunately, it doesn't happen enough for it create too much of a problem.
Overall, Oni is challenging enough to keep you playing, and will keep you wanting to get to the next level. With 17 huge levels, Oni will keep you busy for quite a while. This game wins, with great graphics and fun gameplay.
Finally, another game worth owning on the PS2 has been released!!!
Recommended!!

Imagine Jet For Gemeni (n64) for PS2 with bad graphics and horrible controls. You need one stick to steer side to side and look up and down, while using the other to side-step and move forward? Then to make things worse, they don't even let you change it. Control ..., gameplay is stolen, and graphics aren't really up to par. Think twice before getting this overhyped ...-fest.
Use the D-pad!

If you're planning on buying this game, be warned: You will HATE it for the first hour or so. The controls are unlike any other game I've ever played. Once you get used to them, though, the advantages are clear. mainly, you can do several things simultaneously. For instance: you can slide across the ground into an enemy, knocking him down, while using a hypo spray (i.e. med pack) and picking a gun up off the ground all in one motion! If you ask me, that's worth the time it takes to get used to the weird controls.
One word of advice: D-Pad. You use the D-Pad or the left analog stick to control Konoko's movement forward and back and strafe left and right. Use the D-Pad it's a lot easier.
The basic gameplay is really strong. The story, up through the first 1/3 of the game is pretty typical anime kind of stuff. The voice acting is decent.
Where this game really loses points is in the details. The levels are huge and really cool structurally, but the textures are bland and and don't change much. The ground is often too dark, which sometimes makes it difficult to judge distances. There are places where there should be lots of civilians, but only a few show up. The cut scenes are also really disappointing.
On the whole, I would rate Oni as more of a 4- rather than a 4. It's a great foundation and fun to play, but as a total package, it could be a lot better.
