I like this game because 1) I love The Matrix (bullet time) and 2) you get to murder and slaughter. Now, with that being established, I'd say the rest of the game is pretty bland. The control for one is confusing especially on the screaming baby head levels.
The story isn't anything new, it's the same one from The Punisher, but the character Max makes it a little more interesting. The weapons really add a nice touch because the Jackhammer is one vicious piece of machinery.
Rent this one first, it's not so hard to beat so it'll save you all a few dollars stolen from your granny's purse after the big win at bingo. Actually, don't rent it, ask someone you know if you can borrow it like I did. With the [money] it costs to rent you could go to the movies and watch Blade II or get a double whopper value meal. Your choice.
Hell Yeah!!!

Saw the demo for this game on my brother's PC, decided to rent it to see if I like it. I bought it the day I returned the rental. Let me tell ya, there's nothing like diving in Matrix-style slow motion headfirst into a room full of heavily armed mobsters with two Uzis and capping everyone in the room before you hit the ground. Yes, this is what you get to do in this game! The action and violence is unparalleled. If you shoot a guy in the head, a hole appears where the bullet entered and blood splatters the wall behind him. The bodies do not disappear, either. The analog stick controls proved a little challenging at first, but as I progressed, it became almost natural. The story is good, but the writing is pretty cheesy. Sometimes it sounds like bad high school poetry. But that's not the point. The point is, you get to KILL A LOT OF BAD GUYS!!! Shoot 'em, beat 'em down, Blow 'em up. Just don't leave any survivors or you'll get a bullet in the back of the head. Definitely not for the weak-hearted, (or the weak stomached).
Did a Bullet just fly past me?

Here it is. The ultimate in gamming technology. A game with attitude. It puts you in the action. A few years ago, my friend kept telling me of max payne a detective story with a charcter that has similar featrures to me. (Becuase I always wear a leather jacket and I'm italian, plus when I sqiunt my eyes, I look like him.) Anyways, I said I'd like to play it but he said it was for Pc. I was crushed. But then it came out for playstation2 and I couldn't keep from tearing open the package like a raviounious animal! The loading process is a little lengthy but it was worth it. I took the tutorial and figured what conmtrols were right for me. It took me about 25 minutes to get used to them. The best thing about this game is the use of a slow motion button. It slows down everything--movements, bullets, even sound. You could also do cool shoot-diving and bullet dodging. The instruction maunel said that this game was inspired by the matrix and the use of slow motion in movies. They weren't foolin'. The game also has a program installed for the videogame. It adapts to your playing skills. Which means, if you absoletuely [are bad], the enemies will start to slack off in killing you and be the most terrible shots each time you play. But if you're an ace with a gun, they'll hunt you done and fling grenades at your head. I love the main character. He's got attitude and is a combination of bruce willis and a chunk of hard-gritted courage. The sounds were awesome. The only thing this game needs is an option for different camera angles that revolve around the charaters and you can make your own movie with each level. like the film director option in Driver. The only negative thing about this game is that the levles are too short. But each level has so much detail, I could've sworn I was invading in someone's personally life. Buy This game! You'll be glad that you did and you won't get tired of playing it ever.

this is one of the best games i have ever played. the story line is twisted and dark. it almost as if i'm playing a movie. the controls take a little getting used to. i'd say 30 mins, hour tops. at somepoints it is difficult, but it is still great. i recommend it for anyone who wants to be a action hero.
Grand Theft Auto 3 meets Resident Evil meets Fight Club

"Grand Theft Auto 3" had everything a man wants: fun, cars, and guns. "Resident Evil" had the suspense, graphics, and storyline. "Fight Club" had the narration of a hopeless psycho with nothing to lose. Think of this game as those two games and movie, all in one.
This was the first game I rented when I purchased my Playstation2. And I tell everyone who has seen the commercials for this game, it's as good as it looks on TV. Believe the hype. It has an interesting story line, and excellent graphics.
The only annoying thing about this game is how jerky the controlling can get. Trying to walk across the rooftops in the middle of "Part 1" is more of a pain-in-the-[butt] ... The controlling is so jerky, that when you're walking across the connecting rooftops, your bound to fall off and have to start the chapter over. But don't let that discourage you from buying this game.
This is a must have for anyone who liked Resident Evil or Grand Theft Auto 3, or even the movie "Fight Club".

Max Payne for the Playstation 2 is not worth the [money]. The graphics and sound are amazing, but the gameplay is frustratingly choppy and not very responsive. When three or four gangsters are shooting at you, the frame rate becomes extremely slow and it becomes impossible to aim your weapon correctly. I rented it, found the cheat codes, and beat it in eleven hours total. The game is IMPOSSIBLE to play on the PS2, because the PS2 cannot handle the smooth frame rate that is required. If you have a decent PC, I suggest you buy it for that particular platform. It was a fun 11 hours, though. For a good PS2 first-person shooter, try Red Faction or Half Life.

I didnt buy this game. I borrowed it from my uncle. He said he couldn't figure out the controls. So since he wasn't ever going to play it, i decided to borrow it from him. I did not like the controls. I can't ever seem to get used to games that use both sticks, where the one on the left moves the guy forward and backward, but doesn't turn the guy left or right, he straifes, and the other one on the right makes him turn and moves the camera angle up and down. It anoyes the hell outa me. Why cant one stick be used to move the guy all around and the other has him straife and moves the camera angle.
At first I really liked this game, but one level got me to hate this game. I dont remember which one it was but it was one of the levels towards the end of the game. It was a dream with a very anoying baby crying and it was a very confusing maze I just couldn't seem to beat. That baby was so anoying, it wouldn't stop crying. So I stopped playing the game. I just gave up. My uncle kinda wanted it back by this time even though he probably wouldn't ever play it.
All in all, this game is alright, the graphics kinda stink, the blood kinda stinks, the weapons were cool, and the puzzles weren't too hard (Except for the dream, that darn baby, AHHH!!!) and i give it 3 stars.

Max Payne takes gaming to new levels with the awesome story, cool graphics, and sweet bullet time play. What makes this game good, is that it isn't extremely hard to play. The difficulty adjusts with your skill, making the game just right for you. The plot takes nice twists and turns making the game that much more interesting to play. The gameplay is great, it is just too bad that there is only single player mode. Still, the one player version of this game is terrific, even though the game is short that doesn't take any of the fun away. You should buy this game, if you do you will be wanting more and more levels.
