Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is yet another in a long line of fantastic games. I admit it, I was a HUGE addict of the original Gauntlet, with the Green Archer Needs Food Badly. When Gauntlet came out for the Nintendo, I bought it immediately and played it non stop for hours and hours. I came across G:DL when it was first released and without examining the box much at all, it was MINE. Let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed!
This is the first game we played with more than two people on our Playstation 2 - we bought the MultiTap explicitly for this game. It's a blast! And the improvements are astounding. First off, you get up to eight main characters. I have always loved the archer, but I play the others at times too. As you move them up levels, their appearance changes, they get cool familiars, their spells get more powerful, they learn new abilities, they get to heal, and much more.
The levels are both familiar and fascinating. Just wait until you get into the Jester's world! The Escher-like levels are phenomonally fun. Someone really had a good mastery of space to develop those worlds. The other graphics are equally as interesting. The music and monsters all fit well with the worlds.
It's not just hack and slash. There are a lot of puzzles, a lot of what-do-you-use-keys-on, a lot of mazes and memory and combinations involved. There are even hidden characters, additional SECRET characters and other hidden things that it's taken a ton of replaying to get a walkthrough written. The same is completely replayable and is a perfect friends-for-the-afternoon kind of game.
I enthusiastically recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good arcade game!

WOW!!! To say the least. I bought this game on a Thursday. My buddies and I havn't put it down since, and it's a good week later. The single player is fun, especially once you're a raging minotaur. Mine is a 53rd level with only one stat NOT maxed out. A true power house. To those who don't understand what I'm talking about, if you remember the arcade version (Legends), you'd remember the stats: Strength, Magic, Armor, and Speed. It is so rewarding to watch your character level up. I'm at level 53, just WAITING to see what changes at 60. Every ten levels your character will change and grow. At 25 and 50, your magic gains special abilities, like changing junk into gold, or ruined food into good food. These little things make the game so very rewarding. The game is fun 1 player, impossible to put down with 2, and I havn't tried 3 or 4. I'm waiting to buy the multi tap JUST for this game. Well, thats kind of alot said about nothing except that the game is great. As far as the music goes, I am impressed. Some of the sound tracks sound like their straight out of Conan and Red Sonya. Very cool! The game play is the standard hack and slash Gauntlet action. You'll never escape the James Earl Jones of Midway. "Red Minotaur needs food badly.." and the other inspiring things he says. The voice adds a much desired flavor to top and awesome game. The graphics are great and I haven't seen them lag yet. To someone weary to buy a game without trying it, this game is worth the gamble. I bought it on impulse and havn't been let down yet. Hope you enjoy this beautifull addition to the Gauntlet saga.

I got this game on May 1st. The local store had it and I bought it. ITS GREAT! Everything from the music to the spells to the monsters to the characters is great, no complaints at all! There are like over 24 secret characters! They evolve by appearance, spells and power the more levels you go up! Tons of worlds/levels to conquer and the action is never dull. The graphics are great, especialy on spells and big monsters...and I haven't even tried the multiplayer mode! CANT WAIT! The levels are put together well and are very fun to explore and ... everything you see...hehe...falling rocks, lava oceans, burning walls, etc all make it more realistic. THE MUSIC IS GREAT!! Good catchy little songs, and erie noises make it really cool. Overall its a great game and I recomend it. Buy it, you wont be sorry!

I bought this game after reading the great reviews on Amazon.com, and frankly, I was disappointed at what I was getting for an alledged "amazing" PS2 game. I'm sure any Gauntlet fans will praise this just like Legends and the original arcade classic. But really, how amazing is a game that you can beat by holding down one button and standing back from enimies? The graphics, with the excption of a few seconds-long cutscenes, are easily PSX level, and most of the good animation is taken up by moves you rarely need to use. The basic premise of the game is to find crystals and stones, but you need not deviate from the beaten path to get most of the items. The levels are cluelessly easy to finish; just keep walking and throwing your (infinite, I might add) weapon at a constant stream of enimies.
All the special moves and potions are extras put in for special effects, you could beat nearly any level without them. Bosses are slightly harder, but if you get the easy to find "legendary" items, the bosses are just huge goblins on their way to the chopping block. With weak graphics, little story, and monotonous levels, I thought, "Okay. Just try the multiplayer. That's what this game is all about." I tried with two controllers, because I never invested the $105 needed to get a multitap and 2 extra controllers, and needless to say, I was shocked. The multiplayer resembled a bad attempt to copy old "Ninja Turtles" games. The screen stayes locked on the two characters, and if you don't move smoothly together, you spend half the time sitting in poison gas because your partner is killing enimies on the other side of a wall. I can't imagine how confined four characters would feel. And you can kill all the enimies by yourself. Why bring a friend? To split the boredom?
If you loved Legends, perhaps you should try this, it IS an improvement. But don't buy it because of the good reviews, those are by die-hards who love hack & slash. RENT FIRST, if you don't mind losing the 5 bucks, and be sure to get far enough to realize how mind-numbingly similar all the levels end up being.
Oh the glory of Gauntlet...

Gauntlet has always been a good series of games. Even the early 80's arcade versions and Sega rip-offs like Golden Axe were extremely cool because the game has such a great premise: beat the enemy until his butt is blue and he can't take it anymore! This is really a great game, innovative on so many level, and so much better than the last version released. There are four new characters to play with, plus the original four and a bunch of characters you can unlock as you play. And while theres a lot of action and violence, there isn't all that much blood to see which is nice. The best feature of this game is its universal appeal. I (a 22 yr old female) play it at home with my 48 yr old dad and my 7 yr old brother (who is told repeatedly before and after play not to try this at school). We all love it, and we're all doing pretty well at it. So, in summary, this game is extremely cool, lots of fun, and allows for tons of family interaction. Bonding through video games, the trend of the 21st century.

I've played previous incarnations of Gauntlet and, I'll be the first to admit, you do see alot of Diablo and Baldurs Gate:Dark Alliance in it. Even so, you got to remember that Gauntlet has been around longer than all of them. Unlike those games, Gauntlet doesn't take itself too seriously and that is what makes it such a blast to play. Going from level to level hacking and slashing, figuring out puzzles, and trying to collect everthing you need to progress in the game is way cool. If I had any gripes, it'd have to be with the graphics. Although they were better than any previous Gauntlet released, I still don't think they harnessed the true power of the Playstation2. I think they coulda been alot better than they were. One thing is for sure, though, the graphics didn't look like N64 graphics. They were better than that but they coulda been better. Other than that, Gauntlet:Dark Legacy was awesome. Even better with friends, too. Definitely worth recommending to everyone. This game is fun, fun, fun.

I grew up on the original Gauntlet on Nintendo. This game is every bit as fun as the original plus it is a more visually stunning than most games I have seen. The cooperative play is great. Players of all skill can play and have a great time. A great change from the shooter games where one expert just dominates. If you are great and your friend is terrible it doesn't matter, you can both play and its still fun. Anybody can play and everyone can have fun. Even my mom enjoyed playing it! That's saying something. The old characters are here and there are some great new ones as well as some cool characters you can unlock througout. The best part is that the game is long. No more of this crap you find today where you buy a game and are finished a week later. This game is great and has a lot of replay value. This is an all around great game and my personal favorite for PS2.

I own a N64, and loved Gauntlet Legends on that platform, so when this game came out, I thought that it would be great because the system is upgraded and the graphics would be awesome. But, the game turns out to have the exact same graphics as those on the N64, and many of levels are actually repeated. The story didn't change (much) either. Sure, there are eight more characters than seen on the Nintendo 64, but that isn't enough. And there are some newly added levels, and tons of game time. There are also some hard-to-find hidden items that can be fun to uncover. And yes, there is a lot of game play, something missing in lots of games. These are the few reasons that I gave the game an average score. But when the game hardly changes from its N64 ancestor, it isn't a worthy upgrade. Oh, and the multiplayer mode? It is worse than the very old arcade games. The camera doesn't move so that everyone must be on the same screen (which is the same as the old Gauntlets) and it is annoying how people tend to get stuck in a corner of the screen and you have to go backwards to get them out. Overall, the game is worth being rented but not even that if you have the N64 version.

This game is terribly addicting... for me. I can understand why this game got bad reviews, because it can seem repetitive and boring at times, but only when you have no new levels to go to. There are plently of characters and each has four different costumes. Each character has their own moves and special moves. Sure, the graphics aren't great, but this game is a classic.
Gameplay
The single player can get boring after a while, but if you buy the PS2 MultiTap and play with a bunch of friends the game can be great... I haven't played with four people but I'm assuming it would be cool because the pressure grows as your teammates drop like flies. The game can get boring, but rent it for a long weekend, you'll enjoy it.
Graphics
Like I said, they aren't perfect but it's an arcade game and the graphics work well for me. Some animations look choppy and weird but you'll get over it as soon as you open up a heap of levels and characters.
Controls
Simple, simple, and simple. You'll learn these within a couple minutes. Great controls.
Overall
Good game. It has some obvious flaws but if you like this kind of stuff then buy it, there aren't many other games like it, and it's an instant classic.

Rather than give Dark Legacy a traditional review, I will tell you this; these are the dull summer months between college courses, and often my best friend and I are wanting for something fun to do. Given our nature, we often play games (usually multiplayer) to pass the time. Until Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, our summer was immensely slow. This game, however, is a dream come true. Together we can team up to obliterate hordes of vile monsters with a nostalgic Gauntlet flavor, and the hours zip past without warning. As a single-player experience, I have no doubt that Dark Legacy is lacking, as the action can quickly become repetitive. With a friend or two, however, this simple formula ignites. "Just one more game," we keep telling each other as we gain levels and take on deeper, more challenging levels and bosses. "Just one more game..." Simply put, Dark Legacy may not be the PS2 game for you if you don't have any friends interested in sharing the adventure - but if you do, pick it up NOW, or you'll never know what fun you're denying yourselves.
