My four year old received this game for Christmas. It is very repetitive and has little or no educational value. Probably the only good thing about it is he is learning how to use controller. I think the Leapster is the best bet for video games for kids. However I am thinking about getting him the Frogger Hop, Skip and Jump game and mat. Lets hope that's not a waste of money too!!!

Just Replying to the Disc Read error.....

This happened to my sons original PS2 twice. I called Sony, and they repaired it free of charge both times. It happens because the reader goes out, and since it's a defect in their product, they'll fix it.

A Review Of "Dora the Explorer Journey to the Purple Planet"

My 5 year old daughter received this for Christmas, finishing it within two days; it's a short game, but she enjoyed it and is still playing it. The game has all the elements from the TV series: Boots tags along with Dora, Map provides the directions, Backpack provides the tools you need when the time comes, and all the familiar songs are there. The goal is to help some aliens find their way back home; that is, the Purple Planet. To get there you have to follow set paths on different planets, solving simple puzzles along the way, such as matching shapes or colours.

This was the first Playstation 2 game my four year old daughter has played and the controller was too big for her hands; she placed the controller on her lap, clutching the left joystick from the top, using her right forefinger to press the Action button. She asked for my help once, when a path wasn't obvious; otherwise, she spent six to eight hours playing it, finishing it in that time.

I was disappointed that the game didn't take long to complete, but my daughter doesn't mind, and that's all that matters.

Fun but too short....

My just turned 4 yr old fininshed this game in 3 days. You think they could add some mini games or something. Not really worth $30.. It would be better just to rent it.

We got this game for our 3 year old daughter. I wanted it because she loves Dora. She loves the game and understands it well. I think the animation could be a lot better. It's not as clear as I hoped it to be. Unfortunatly there aren't very many little girl ps2 games and my expectations for this game were very high.

Short but Sweet

The good: If your kids love Dora they are gonna LOVE this game. The graphics are good, the controls are easy, it's fairly repetitive (in the good way that kids like...once they master a few basic controls they will really enjoy this. All the "planets" are the same in terms of controls but just present a different "maze") and it is just like the cartoon. There's no death and if a mission is failed Dora just gets to give it another try. It's very appropriate for ages 3-6. I actually had to force my kid off the PS after THREE HOURS of continous playing Dora on her birthday. The kids do think it's fun.

The bad: $30 is too much for this game if you have an older child. My 6 y/o is advanced enough that she mastered the PS2 controls in about 15 mins and beat the game in 3 days! I think she spend about 7 total playing hours. I could have rented it for 5 bucks! I was disappointed just because it was too short for an older child and Dora does have many 5 and 6 y/o fans. I think it could have stayed at the same difficulty level and been a little longer and satisfied all the age groups.

My advice: Ages 3-4 this should be excellent if they're Dora or Diego fans! Ages 5-6......pick up a used copy or rent it unless they don't have any experience with PS2...otherwise it's liable to be too short.

If you bought your kids the first Dora PS game for PSone this one is along the same lines, just better graphics and different "challenges". Also my daughter does still request to play it from time to time so it must have some "replayability" factor.

RE: Disc Error

There are probably only three reasons that you are getting the Disc Error. One the disc itself is a bad disc that happened during manufacturing. This does happen on occasion. So, take or send the disc back and get a replacement - the new one should work fine since this is a random error. The second is that the disc is now dirty...assuming that it has been played and possibly dropped on the floor a few times it may just have a smudge or two on it. If that is the case take a plain kleenex (no lotion, etc.) and wipe from the center of the disc outward to the edge and do that all around the disc (underside of the disc only) until you have gone 360 degrees in a circle and cleened the whole disc; then reinsert into the game system and try it again. If it fails see point 1 or point 3 I have made. The third issue is that you have an old PS2 and if the disc has a blue backing on it (on the underside it is blue and shiny) then your old PS2 most likely wont play the game. This has been happening with many games on the market and people are having to replace their old PS2 machines with the slim line to solve the problem.

Hope that helps!

Wish there were more games like this.

This game is perfect for my 3 1/2 year old. She can't die or do anything wrong and have to start over. Dora also explains what to do in each situation and sometimes shows a picture of when to press the action button.
I think this would be a good choice for someone who wants to share their time spent playing PS2 with their children. The only thing that I really thought could be improved is the graphics could have been better.
I wish there were more early childhood games, like this one, for the PS2.
