LET'S KILL SOME FURRY LITTLE WOODLAND CREATURES!!!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 16 / 19

Usually the only type of games I play are racing / driving games. I don't know what made me buy this game ( I've never hunted in real life, am a pacifist and hate killing ), but I am very glad I did because this is a very enjoyable game. I think the graphics are great, the hunting lands are quite big and full of wonderful furry woodland creatures to slaughter.

You can chose from bows and arrows, rifles, and shotguns and hunt in 8 different locations. The animals you can "bag" are many varieties of deer, elk, moose, black bears, brown bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep and, although they are non-game animals, rabbits, foxes, wolves and opposums.

When you first start the game you can hunt in only two places, you must hunt in season mode and do certain things to unlock additional areas. It is a blast to do and I enjoyed it a lot. You can hide in a blind and wait for your prey to walk by and kill the unsuspecting critter or take to the trees in a tree stand and kill whatever walks below your perch. It's great!

The game is rated T for teen because of "blood and violence" the box says. Well, I've done quite a bit of hunting the past two days and while there has been considerable violence I've seen NO blood.

So, if you don't mind a little senseless slaughter and want to experience the thrill of the hunt in the comfort of your own house, this game is for you. So come on, let's go hunt Bambi and Smokey and Bullwinkle and friends, you'll have a great time. I'm not kidding!

ADDENDUM: Since writing this review I've played this game some more and have now noticed there IS blood in the game. When you do not kill your prey but only wound it, it runs off and eventually dies but leaves a trail of blood on the ground for you to follow. Adds even more realism to the game I think. -George Bauch.

My boys love the split-screen play & no waiting for loading

My boys play this game all the time. They love it. This game looks much better than all the other hunting games we have tried. Finally they can both play at once and I don't have to hear them fight over who gets to play. The hunting areas are really big and the game doesn't stop to load all the time like the Cabela games. Also, you are not surrounded by mountains or feel like you are hunting animals trapped in a bowl. This is as life like as it gets. The animals look and move very realistically. Your character also doesn't get tired all the time which is another thing we hate about Cabela games. This is the real deal.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a WINNER !

I had been waiting with baited breath for this, and I cannot reccomend it highly enough. It has the best outdoor graphics I have seen on a PS2 and the levels are HUGE! no little valleys and then loading here... Just one load and you can explore a huge level hunting for deer, moose, even mountain lions and bears. There are little critters like squirrels and raccoons for target practice. The atention to detail is incredible. Leaves fall from the trees in the fall and the animals kick up dust and splash as they run through water ! The vehicles are very easy to control, actually being useful as opposed to a liability. The weapons are great and replicate the real world weapons very well. The fact that the designers included a split screen two player mode is a first for hunting games and is a worthwhile addition. I have a great time playing with my friends, as we hunt down animals in torney mode. The online is astounding. The other hunters appear exactly as you set them up and instead of the weapons just appearing their hands when you change them, the hunter actually reaches back into his pack and gets out the new weapon. Stalking through the woods for a prize buck and then spotting someone 100yds away sighting in on YOUR buck is a real rush as you try and bag it first. The AI on the animals is great and they are hard to kill! The graphics on the animals are great and the trophy room is presented as a museum style with all of your animals presented in brilliant dioramas ! All in all a very polished game and the only one you should get for PS2

Pleasantly suprised

I had debated whether or not to get this based on the reviews. I finally got it and am glad I did. I must say, the graphics and gameplay are astounding. Some of the other reviewers saying otherwise either work for Cabelas or are somoking some serious cronic. The hunting worlds are huge and you are not closed in by walls on both sides.

I have played a lot of different Hunting Games and none of them are going to equal out to what this is. It looks like it is real and [you are] in the game. Online play and split screen will make a new meaning to fun.

I don't have an online connection but I found out this game has hunter bots you can hunt against. What a blast. The hunting levels look great especially all the different seasons, they look really incredible. Very realistic animal behaviours, at least compared to what i've actually hunted. Big time fun.

The graphics are amazing and blow away all other hunting games by far. This game has two player split-screen and real online play, not just stats. This is the only online Playstation 2 game on the market. Deer Hunter has always made the best hunting games out there and is truly the best hunting game on the Playstaion 2.

I have played all the deer hunter games and this looks like it's going to be awesome. I can't wait to go hunting online with my friends. I don't know why people are going on about the graphics, I saw some screenshots and it looks totally real! The animals look amazing and the environments look like photographs! That person must have been looking at a differnet game.

Deer Hunter Rules

I've played the Deer Hunter series on PC, along with many other hunting games produced by other companies throughout the years, and I can tell you this is the best hunting series ever! It's so realistic, I can honestly say it's actually pretty good practice for real life hunting as well as great fun during the off-season. I can't wait for this game to come out, on Dec. 19. I plan to buy it as a XMas present for my husband (and for me too, lol). We both love hunting, both in computerized games and in real life too, and now with the new split-screen 2-player option I've heard about in this game, we can finally hunt together in the game just like we do in real life!

Now, to all these [people] who came here just to say that it is mean - what are you thinking? ... Here's a question for you: Would you rather your kids be playing games where the object is to kill other humans instead? ...The fact is, there are plenty of other games out there on the market today that revolve around the brutal destruction of other people's lives, in one form or another... Yet [it's worse] whenever they come out with a game that depicts the humane killing of wildlife, which has been a necessity for our survival for thousands of years, and remains a cherished tradition to this day... Not that I'm against any of those games, though. I realize they're just for fun, just like this game is, and shouldn't be taken so seriously. Just making a point!

Anyways, if you enjoy hunting then you should definitely buy this game. It's produced by a trusted brand and the Deer Hunter series has a long history of great graphics, AI, and realism along with easy-to-master controls, and the re-playability factor is unmatched in any other genre! If you do not like hunting, though, then obviously this game is not for you...

Review by someone who actually played the game

I've played a few of these hunting games, including the Cabela's. Why? Because there are just so-many fighting, racing, resident evil type games, and other done to death genres you can play. It's fun and interesting. If you like stalking and sniping people in quake, then you will appreciate this. For the idiots who don't approve of killing animals, pretend the animals are humans, like in all other video games. Idiots. As far as cooperative play, it's kind of fun. It's split screen view, like Mario Kart. There's not enough games out there you can play cooperative with your friends. Graphics, I don't think I've seen a better outdoor enviorment on another PS2 game. The AI is pretty good, without the sticking points of the Cabella's games, for those who have played the games, you'll know. As far as the PC version, it's done by a different developer so comparing it is apples and oranges.
