Is everyone ...?

I cannot believe how high a rating this game is getting. This supposed "Zelda killer" is nothing more than a dungeon crawl along the lines of Evolution on Dreamcast. Zelda tramples this bore into the dirt. It's got many similarities to Evolution: randomized dungeon levels, repeat visits back to town to restock on supplies so you can go back to the dungeon, bland enemies, that feeling of inane repetition. As for combat, where's the strategy? Where're the backflips, the dodges, the ability to take out an enemy in more than two fashions, the feeling that you're actually in the middle of a fight instead pressing one button a lot? Basically, you either combo them to death, or you use your charge up super move. Dungeons are bland. Basically, it's a bunch of rooms connected by tunnels. There are no puzzles or unique obstacles that have to be dealt with. There's no sense of discovery, no "Aha!" moments that are the great moments of Zelda style games. Every dungeon just feels like a dungeon. You're not discovering whole new worlds filled with nooks, crannies, and secrets waiting to be found, you're dungeon crawling, looking for loot and the key to the next level so you can do it all over again. Gameplay is repetitive. Venture to the dungeon, find the mystic balls and key, go back to town, build (which does have a minor appeal to it) and get supplies (did I mention your character has to have a drink of water every three minutes? Or that his weapon starts to wear down and break after killing five or six enemies?), venture to the dungeon and find mystic balls on the next level which looks exactly the same as the first. Ugh, ugh, ugh!

Once again, Sony's mediocrity in RPGs shines through again

"Zelda Killer?" Only if that means copying Zelda in every way imaginable can make it superior. "A league of its own?" Not exactly, file this one with Legend of Dragoon as a predictably unoriginal, mediocre RPG. If you're looking for that game that will pick up this slump of good software for the PS2, you'll have to wait even longer.

Now let me clarify this: I have not played Zelda 64 nor do I own a N64. I did not hear about how this was going to be a copycat of Zelda until I finished reading someone else's review a few minutes ago. That said, I still felt like I was playing a rather effortlessly made copy of it. For sheer curiosity, I tried Zelda at a friend's house. Even the grunts Link makes in-battle seems to be stolen from this game.

What is the gameplay like? For "Zelda-virgins" such as myself, it was pretty good at first. It was easy to jump into, and hard to put down for the first 5 hours or so. Good, until, after quite some time in the game, nothing really happens in the storyline (a Sony RPG trademark) and after hours upon hours of repetitive gameplay (yet another Sony RPG trademark), it failed to keep me within its grasps.

The graphics, while good, are nothing spectacular. They quickly get tiresome when you're in the same dungeon for 5 hours or more. Every level of the dungeons look the same, so if you have a high tolerance of environments as repetetive as the gameplay, you'll have no trouble there.

And here's another staple, the immense amount of typing errors, the third sign of a Sony RPG. While there isnt much text, it was enough to make me want to send money to Sony to buy a spell checker for the sake of pity.

Georama is almost innovative. It would be if Sim-City hadn't done this general idea first, and if it gave you more freedom. The villagers are very picky as to where their house should be placed. So picky that you'll wonder why Sony even bothered to let you build these villages at all.

In general, buy this if you liked "Legend of Dragoon" or if you've never even heard of the Zelda series.

suprisingly...not fun

new features, thats nice. o.k. graphics, but who cares? the game just can't keep intrest for me(i'm a big RPG fan). If you are buying this game because your fond of RPG's, being a fan myself, i can easily say you won't enjoy it much. The game received too much hype, and has in no way lived up to it

yup

yea, it was supposed to show up at launch. They delayed it, and it doesn't show from what i played. It wasn't fun, i don't know exactly what i didn't like, but it just wasn't something you want to play

Terrible.

*I am so dissapointed to have played this game. I have played it for a long time, trying to like the extrememly hyped title, but after being a gamer for fourteen years, I can't like it. I even hate it.

*Not well recieved in Japan....Hmmm...I wonder why. I play many Japanese games and I can understand why they didn't like this. The characters in the game resemble anime or manga, but they are so shallow and plain. There is nothing exciting about the characters and you feel no emotion toward them. They have no 'personal conflicts', and without even realizing this idea yourself, you sense something is wrong.

*Random dungeon. So random that you need not worry about remembering where items are located. And no walkthroughs to guide some people who may wish to use one. Plus that gets pretty boring.

*Graphics...? These graphics aren't real great. They are on the lower side of the PS2 capabilities, regardless of what anyone might say. They are smooth and filtered looking, instead of generated. Anyway, they just aren't very good for the PS2.

*Plot, Storyline and Leveling up. I suppose I have a lot to say that could aide you in the decision to buy this game. Yes, this game compares to Zelda in gameplay and graphics. But...man is it dense. The dialouge is like the Super Nintendo in a short RPG. Only during a brief cutscene is there any talking at all, and it is all text. This game is not like the Bouncer with real speaking, or any normal RPG with actual options and quests. It's strictly linear and has one mission that must be performed over and over again. There are no special items or interaction between characters. My favorite game is Final Fantasy 8, so I bet if you are a Square gamer this game will make you sick! It is like a 3D platform, adventure game where the character just must fight the repetion of enemies for 20 some replica dungeons. There is NO world map traveling. To go to a location, one clicks on the locale on a map screen and automatically goes to that place. There is no character leveling up either, just weapon leveling up. That is quite worthless. This game might keep the attantion of a 8 to 12 year old child, but if you are past that age, please rent first to realize you won't like this.

Too Many Things Bog This Game Down

Dark Cloud definately has the makings of a great game despite being a blatant Zelda ripoff. This would be an amazing game if you did not have to repair your weapon and consume water. Those two features totally bog down the gameplay to the point that it is almost unplayable.

extermely overrated game

I wasted my money after reading all the positive reviews for this game, thinking it would be an excellent dungeon exploration game like the far superior King's Field.

Oh god I was wrong. First, all dungeons are random generated. Although it may look like a good idea, making lots of variety in the game, it makes it totally boring. Being random generated, the maps are ultra simple, so you can forget all your dreams of dungeon exploration. They have no originality, it's always "[get]all monsters, get all treasure and key to the next level." They try to make variations, like zones where you can just use one of your characters, or having to guess the correct key for a zone, but the keys are obvious.

Secondly, the almost non-existent story is totaly [bad]and is just an excuse for the Actraiser clone aspect of the game. Instead of building a world like you did in Actraiser, you just place back the parts that some noname hidded in the dungeons.

The music is totally awful, even more repetitive than the game itself.

The only fun in this game is in the ..upgrade system, which replaces the character experience system of most RPG's. Oh the originality! They must be gods to have thought of such an imaginative system! In Dark Cloud your weapons break and you can get thirsty! They rule!

A final note for those who just bought the game and are disapointed but still have hope: No, it doesn't get better later.

Zelda killer? I think not.

This game was no where near as good as Zelda the graphics were ok, the sword build up was a good idea but other than thatyou might as well sell this game as soon as you get it.

Rip-Off

I'm terribly sorry to say it, but this game was most likely the worst I game played in a long, long time. Dark Cloud was not only boring, tedious, and confusing, it was also a huge rip-off of every single Zelda game ever released. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Very cool game...NOT!
