It's no Zelda

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 4

This game looks so much like Zelda, there can be no doubt that Sony is trying to appeal to everyone (like me) who was impressed by the N64 Zelda games. Let me tell you, I loved those games, and I thought Dark Cloud was so-so, at best. Whereas in Zelda, you had the feeling of immersion with a whole world, where you could interact with peoples' lives, in Dark Cloud you are playing levels. Repetitive levels. And this Georama stuff is a pale imitation of making people happy as you did in Zelda Mask of Majora. It's like a VERY simple Sim City plus, basically, a 8-bit Nintendo level-based game with amazing graphics. Honestly, if you wish PS2 had Zelda, and hope Dark Cloud can get you your fix (that is why I bought it), skip it. If you like playing the same level over and over again to get a better sword and beat that same level more easily, then I guess you might like it. I was very bored, and couldn't wait to finish the game. Not because I wanted to see the end, just because I wanted to stop playing.

OK game, but not what's it's hyped up to be

Before the game was released, everytime the name "Dark Cloud" was mentioned, you're bound to see the name "Zelda Killer" in there too. Well, I'm sorry, but it's not. Zelda, has a better story and better gameplay. Ture, the "georama" feature is cool, you get to build your own towns and place anything whereever you want but it's just not enough. Most of the game, you're going through dungines, looking for the pieces to build the towns. This could have been tolerable it the dungines had different looking rooms. They don't. They graphics aren't what you would call a second generation. They would have been more impresive if this game came out when the PS2 first came out. Zelda is so much better because Zelda had so much more to do than just dungine crawling. It had a bunch of secret things and mini games, and it had a big world for you to explore. Dark Cloud has none of that. There isn't even an overworld or whatever you call it. You just go straight to the towns. And in each town, you have to find the stupid pieces and rebuild the towns, then repeat the process. Now, for the combat. It's totally like Zelda, except you constantly have to go and buy repair powder because guess what, your weapons have a ceratain amount of hits before the break and disappear. Also, you constantly have to go and drink water because you get thristy. Sure, it's realistc, but we get games to escape to a fantasy, to do things we can't do, and to have fun. You want thrist? Go run 20 miles non-stop. The characters don't look unique at all. The main character looks like Link except for the hat. And the flying god looks like the flying dog from the Neverending Story, if you've ever seen that movie. This game was interesting for the first 30 minutes, but when I saw what you basically have to do for the rest of the game, it got old pretty quickly. I suggest you rent the game before you see if you can look past all these cons.

I bought this game yesterday at the mall and it surprised me. The game incorporates elements from many different games. It's an rpg, sim city type game, and along the lines of a zelda adventure game. Very addicting game and very fun. Many different gamers would enjoy this game not just an rpg fan.

SHEDDING THE LIGHT ON DARK CLOUD

Out of 5 stars (5 being the highest) I rate: Graphics:4 Gameplay:5 Replay value:5. This is one of the best games you can get today. It kept me hooked for 50+ hours! If you like RPG's and Action and Sims then mix them all together you get Dark Cloud. The dungeons are very detailed and the enemies are actually kinda hard to beat. This just gives you more of a challenge. A lot of peolple think this game will stink because of the japanese failure, but there wrong, dead wrong. This game includes so much more than the japonese version and every new thing is gold, solid gold. The hero may look a little odd but who cares. There are 5 other really cool playable charactors that have special features on them. Buy this game if you know whats good for you.

And now a review from someone who's PLAYED the game...

Four words: This game is cool. The animation is very smooth, the city-building is nothing as tedious as SimCity (my apologies if you dig that kind of thing) and the game got a mild rating due to the lack of blood and sexual innuendo. Control took a little getting used to, but once you get over that, the game runs very nicely. The music has a sort of 'Spaghetti-western' feel to it, which seems appropriate since the lead character looks rather like an animated version of a young outlaw Josey Wales ( look it up ) wearing a green Scottish cap. The sound effects are wonderful, very immersive - footsteps sound different on dirt than on stone than on hardwood floors, for instance. Enemies die with a minimum of to-do, disappearing in a flash, as good monsters should. This is not Mortal Kombat, after all. My only complaint is a minor one, the lack of spoken dialogue. As was pointed out to me by a friend though, many RPG's lack this, so I don't think it detracts from the game as a whole. As a side-note - I found it rather amusing that the bad guy looks rather like Inspector Gadget's evil twin- but maybe that's just me. Good graphics, decent control, wonderful audio, and a solid game. What more could you want? [...]

Well, since there are upteenth reviews of this game that were written before its American release, I thought a real review would help. I've been playing the game for a week now and I must say I'm very impressed. The graphics are stunning, the music reminds me of Zelda, which is a good thing.... This game has given me tons of fun thus far, and I'm probably not even a fourth of the way finished.

Go Buy it! If you loved zelda you'll love this.

Improved version of an old concept.

I rented Dark Cloud and had some fun playing it, but I was disappointed that it didn't offer something completely new. The dungeon crawler aspect has been done many times, even with the "collect items to rebuild the town" feature. Despite great graphics and gameplay, this familiarity brought down the game a few notches, in my opinion.

The game basically plays like this: You have a dungeon and a town accompanying it; to save the town, you must explore all the levels of the dungeon (usually around 15), defeat monsters, collect items, and rebuild the town as the townspeople see fit (by placing certain buildings in certain places). A nice twist is the number of allies you can switch to after certain points in the game, rather than having the same character for the entire journey.

But the repetitive nature of the dungeons dragged the game down. I got bored of playing five levels in a row which were all basically the same.

I still liked Dark Cloud a lot, I was just hoping for a fresher concept. If I see the game available for a price in the [price]-range, I'll consider buying it.

Bravo, Bravo, Very well done

This game was masterfully made. It seems like a cross between final fantasy, zelda for N64, and Secret of Mana for PS1, minus the downcomings that made Secret of Mana a Mana a terrible game. You have one town to work with at a time. Each town has a dungeon where you collect the various parts of the town which has been destryoyed. Then you create the town as you see fit, collecting rewards when you finish each persons house. The fighting is like that of zelda, 3rd person with a sword ect. There are 6 playable characters. Each with different weapons and stats. You play one character at a time but switch between them at will. One very cool feature in this game is that as you build up your weapons you can turn them into an attachment that then adds the weapons attributes to your new weapon. Giving the player the goal of creating the ultimate weapon.

This game is challenging and extensive, despite it's 50+ hours of play it doesn't get boring. This is the first true ROG for the PS2 that is worth getting.

Also this game is worth playing again and again because the dungeon is re-generated each time you play. This doesnt mean you have to re-locate every time you shut off your PS2 or go back to town, it has a feature that lets you go back to which level you left off.

If your looking for a game to fill in many empty hours with joy and excitement then this is the game for you.

This game is great! I have been playing it nonstop since I got it. It is not terribly hard. Why are all the people saying it is just copying off of Zelda or other games? WHO CARES? They need more games like Zelda and other good role playing games. This is just another good role playing game and I look foward to seeing more good games from SONY. I mean they have to make good games they make Playstation 2. So get this game if you like role playing games you will like it.

No "Zelda Killer", "Poor Man's Zelda" is more like it.

Months ago I saw a magazine preview of Dark Cloud that hailed it as the "Zelda Killer". Unfortunately, it does not come close at all. Darks Cloud has a number of high points:

1) Beautiful 3D graphics that far surpass N64's abilities. 2) A decent soundtrack. 3) An interesting weapon evolution system similiar to Vagrant Story. 4) Six playable characters.

But unfortunately there are way too many downsides:

1) The characters are heavily unbalanced, the main character, Toan, and the genie, Ruby, are far superior to the other chacters. There is almost no reason to play the other characters except to clear character-specific obstructions. 2) The randomly generated dungeons are incredibly UNimaginative. Basically, the random dungeon generator can only draw tunnels connecting to rooms, with the occasional obstruction or door thrown in. Treasure chests and enemies are also random. This is cool for the first two dungeons, then boredom quickly sets in. There are no rooms that loop, no multi-level rooms, no dungeons where you have to swim or climb, no PUZZLES! Zelda has all these things and more. 3) There is no consistancy in the dungeon floorplans. If you leave the dungeon and go back to the SAME FLOOR, the game will generate a new random dungeon for you. 4) Progress in the dungeon in always down. There is no reason to backtrack to find missed items, new passages, etc. In fact it isn't even possible to backtrack! You have to leave the dungeon then enter again to repeat a floor. 5) There are no secret tunnels, hidden passages, etc. What you see is what you get. 6) The designers of this game must have no imagination at all. The combat system is lifted from Zelda 64, the weapon system is modified and lifted from Vagrant Story, the city buiding aspect is lifted from numerous sims I've played, Heck the main charcter's weapon's names are lifted from Final Fantasy VII! Does anyone remember "Buster Sword", "7th Heaven", and "(Dark) Cloud"? To me, that's just on the border of insulting! 7) The fishing mini game is good, but there should have been more such games to add depth. As it is, you can only fish for so long...

I played this game beginning to end, but by the last few levels the fun had already been lost. I took this game to my local used game/CD store and traded it for Twisted Metal Black. I don't regret that move at all. In conclusion, if you have an N64: Zelda: Majora's Mask is a better game and will take longer to finish. The problem is that this is the only game of its type for PS2 so there's nothing else to pick from. I have hopes that They will make a sequel to Dark Cloud that lives up to the claims of "Zelda Killer", but until then I'd consider this game as rental-only material.
