I am extremely shocked in the fact that I actually liked this game.... alot! I almost put this game back into the box after the first 5 mins. of playing it. I was running around like an idiot in a town completely blanketed in fog and being chased by skinless dogs and flying pteradactyl like creatures. Not only was I clueless on where I should go, but I thought the graphics were cheesy and the gameplay frustrating. Wellllll, I am glad that I didn't give up and continued to play because this game turned out to be one of my all time favorites. The greatness of this game didn't rear it's beautiful head until I got out of the house in the first stage and everything became dark. It was then the eerieness set in and the tone was set for what was to become one of the most captivating PSX games I have played. The whole transferrance between reality and nightmare was ingeneous. I have a PS2 now and am eagerly awaiting the sequel. I have to admit, playing this game at night with only the TV on in a dark room scared the dog doo-doo out of me at times. If you do decide to get this game, please DO NOT judge the first few minutes soley on the gameplay. Finish out the stage and then judge it, I can almost guarantee that you will become engrossed in the game and enjoy it from there!
U all make me sick

Sure this game is scary... ... its at least 5 times scarier than any of the resident Evil series but some of you say you gave up on it just because of the fear??? People you have to face your fears. Im only 14 and ive beaten it, just take it room for room. The scariest part of the game is the satan school with the demon knife weilding children but the hospital also scared the hell out of me. If you like the horror genre then get this but otherwise seriously steer clear. Rent it first and see what I mean in the beginning when you walk down the alley and it starts getting darker with the broken wheelchair and all the blood....youll see...

As the world awaits the next installation in Capcom's flagship Resident Evil series, Konami has stepped forth with Silent Hill, a horror concoction all their own. Instead of merely riding onto the gaming scene on RE's coattails, Silent Hill strikes out into bold new territory and clearly distinguishes Konami as a continued force to be reckoned with in the videogame world.
Once you plop in the game, you're treated to a seemingly peaceful CG intro showing young widower, Harry Mason, on a tranquil late night drive with his seven-year-old daughter, Cheryl. The pair speed down the highway on their way to an aging resort town known as Silent Hill. But somewhere along the way, their trip is cut short as a young girl appears in the middle of the road, captured in the headlights of Harry's jeep. As Harry attempts to avoid hitting the girl, his car spins violently out of control and the world blurs. As Harry regains consciousness in the driver's seat of his wrecked car, he turns to check on his daughter only to find that she's missing. Where did she go? Welcome to Silent Hill, an adventure masterfully crafted by the use of sound, sight and even touch. Played mainly like an adventure game and not an action title, Silent Hill neatly sidesteps any obvious aping of the RE series by taking a more literary turn into the world of horror. With an emphasis on character and storyline, Silent Hill prefers to appeal to gamer's imagination by limiting their vision to a small range of light surrounded by inpenetrable darkness or by jarring any grasp of reality that the gamer might have on what exactly is going on in the game. In fact it's the storyline's refusal to adhere to a formulaic premise, with Harry confronting apparitions, chasing down demons and puzzling over diabolic visions, that makes the game so incredibly unique. Chills and shivers aside, Silent Hill is one strange trip into nightmares left untouched by the more action-oriented gameplay of Resident Evil. The most important factor of the game's immersive qualities ranges from Konami's depiction of Harry as a regular guy with whom gamers can identify with to the excellent use of ambient sounds to catch players offguard in their most vulnerable moments. Harry's plain appearance translates seamlessly into how he actually plays through the game. His aim is awful and his running pace, though quicker than most enemies, still keeps him only a heartbeat away from being mowed down by the demons running amok on the streets of Silent Hill. In fact, because of the limited amount of ammunition available in the game and Harry's inexperience with firearms, you'll find yourself evading enemies more often than confronting them. And this is one of the finest features in the game. Not only does this strengthen the adventure element in Silent Hill, but it also draws the player into the world of the game by mixing in enough realism into the madness. On top of this feature in the game, Silent Hill also refuses to ease up on the game in regards to atmosphere and mood. Backed by an ambient soundtrack, the game features some masterful effects that are sure to have even veteran Racoon City warriors quaking in their boots. From the inexplicable sobbing of an unseen child in a blood-stained school hall to the loud rattling of an invisible "something" underneath the floorboards that you're standing on, the game never sinks into predictability. Imagine all of this while never quite being able to see past arm's length into the darkness. Equipped with only a pocket flashlight, Harry is forced navigate pitch-black areas where demons insist on lurking just outside of the range of sight. Often, you'll hear them before you can actually see them, pushing the tension factor in the game to white-knuckled heights. But as masterful as Silent Hill is, it still can't claim perfection. In a completely 3D, polygonal real-time game environment, there are always going to be issues about control. Silent Hill slightly suffers from this. Maneuvering Harry in some of the game's tougher spots and getting him to go from dead stopped to run and back again can prove an exercise in frustration, especially when you find yourself trapped in a narrow hallway filled with murderous demons ? with only 15 rounds of Handgun ammo left. Visually, the game remains grainier than what's expected of a PlayStation game released in the system's fourth year. But the overall look of the game, with its murky fog effects and clever use of lighting makes good use of the graininess adding to the atmosphere of dilapidation and decay throughout the game. In the face of Silent Hill's brilliant gameplay, these flaws only take so much away from the game and leaves us wondering how great the game will be on a next-generation system.
Calling this a "video game" is not fair warning

If the things you enjoy most about a video game are plot, tension, fear, and high production values, you will probably rate Silent Hill as your all-time favorite video game. I know it is mine.
This reveiw is way different from most reveiws you will read about most video-games. This is because, to me, Silent Hill takes the step from being a video game into being "something" else. It is one of those rare treasures that people say can make people crazy, or at least throw them a little off balance for awhile. The game, in my opinion, is more than just a video game, it is a work of art.
I enjoy things that disturb me. Disturbing art (eg Goya), Disturbing Music (eg Stravinski- The Rite of Spring), disturbing movies (eg The Ring), and disturbing video games. Prior to Silent Hill, the most disturbing media I have ever experienced has been the writings of HP Lovecraft. Now I have a new favorite ans (suprise!) it is a video game. The creators of Silent Hill have combined all of the above media together in bringing disturbing art to the next stage in its evolution- the truly twisted video game. I don't mean twisted in the sense of a sick joke or seeing something shocking or really weird in a movie, but disturbing in the sense of an experience that slightly skews your perspective for a few days afterwards.
Turn the lights out and make sure there isn't going to be alot of noise in the backround. Turn the sound up. Play Silent Hill for as many nights as possible until you finish it. After the first couple of nights, you will find yourself (in the day time even) with the feeling that something is after you. You will have a slightly paranoid feeling all the time and you will have nightmares.
In terms of graphics, gameplay and sound, they are excellent, especially compared to other ps1 games. They are all geared twords freaking you out and making you think. The music is especially excellent and even years later I can say that I have never enjoyed music from a video game so much.
I have never played a video game where I was actually afraid. The goal of making an attack on the character you are playing FEEL like an attack on you has been acheived to an amazing degree in Silent Hill. You will feel panic. You will be afraid.
This game exists essentialy without boundries. Things happen in this game and the game its self has a certain emotional affect that made me think, "Is this legal? Are they allowed to do this?" Pure horror.
Ok, I've rambled enough. The last thing I'll say is that Silent Hill is my single most favorite peice of a horror media that has ever been made. And that says ALOT. Buy it and embrace the fear.

To start off this game is insane. It gets into your head like no other form of entertainment. I haven't played this for about 2 years yet I still have dreams about it...not nightmares just crazy dreams. This game has incredible atmosphere and upon playing it you will forget about its dated graphics and be totally immersed in the story. That said, this isn't for the faint of heart, but its INCREDIBLE!. Anyways the people who are selling this game for $40+ dollars are ripping you off. Buy it new on Konamis website for $20...actually it might be $30, but still its way cheaper than what all these people on amazon are trying to sell it for...$70? *shakes head*
A very, VERY disturbing game...

I got "Silent Hill" as a gift, one of several that i enjoyed playing on the old playstation 1. I had played resident evil, parasite eve, etc; and enjoyed them all. But i really hadn't been all that frightened.
Then i started to play Silent Hill.
This game doesn't showcase the fact that it's SCARY or BLOODY. It presents itself as being purely eery- a cold, lonely sort of fear that pervades the game. The snow, the mist, the radio, and (interestingly enough) the somewhat characatured objects. Weapons, items, and environmental stuff all seem slightly out of proportion.
But the biggest shock, for me, was the "otherworld". Seeing what was just an EERY town turn into something like hell was overwhelming. And it's not an ostentatious hell (BLOOD! GUTS! TOOOOORRRRRRTTTTUUUUURRRRE!!!). It was extremely subtle, only small- but very dire, very effective- changes take place. And that's what makes the game so scary. There is no clear cut line between "Silent Hill" and the hellish otherworld, and that makes it so very frightening. To this day i wonder where the blackness beneath the chain-link ground leads...
And that's just the story. Gameplay is surprisingly fun, though rather simple. You will have a blast beating creatures with the manhole opener. You won't be all that stumped by the puzzles, although there is much to explore, and you have to pay great attention to detail to arrive at the best of the multiple endings. Gameplay remains the understatement, however, as this game manages an almost cinematic horror more than a party-worthy funfest. But this is ultimately much more rewarding in the end, especially when you can't fall asleep...
Scary good fun

Different things scare different people, but this one got to me. I think Silent Hill is by far the scariest video game ever. The creators of this game did an excellent job of setting an extremely creepy mood through disturbing visuals and fear-inducing music and sound. Some of the sound effects are really terrible, and by that I mean scary and effective.
This is not a beautiful game. The graphics are clearly dated, and the fog effects aren't great. If you are someone who needs excellent graphics to enjoy a game, then you are probably better off with RE0 or the soon-to-be-released Silent Hill 3. For those of you who don't care about appearances that much, check out this classic.
The story is engaging at times, but unravels in the end, as is common in video games. There are a couple of different endings, and the one I got when I completed the game didn't make any sense, or resolve any issues. But the game was very fun overall, and I liked it a lot.
Overall: 9/10

I played Silent Hill about 3 months after it first came out. Since the movie, this game has been IMPOSSIBLE to find! It really is worth it to go back and play these games again. I had forgotten how scary it is. There are many alternate endings (some goofy), many horrible creatures, and many things that will creep you out. If you like this one, play the other games as well. They have to do a lot with this town... specially Silent Hill 3.
Defiantly worth your time.
Ecstatic & Beautifully Chilling

Silent Hill is by far the creepiest, most twisted game I have ever had the pleasure of surviving through. The characters seem very real (with the possible exception of the voiceover for Harry Mason, the protagonist), while the imagery and sounds are very unreal. Combined with the soundtrack, you could really scare yourself if you are alone and in the dark.
This game re-invented the genre of Survival-horror

I have always loved survival horror, I own Dino Crisis 1 and 2, I love Res Evil, but this game is Survival Horror with a twist. Instead of being frightened by monsters jumping out at you or dinosaurs breaking through plate glass windows, this dark, eerie game scares you with the atmosphere, from the monster that you know is lurking around the next corner to the crakling of the radio telling something is coming. This is the smart man's horror game, by far the most frightening game I have ever played. I'm dying to play SH 2 for PS2.
