Scariest game ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 5

This game, no matter what anyone says, is the scariest game ever. People complain that it doesn't have the 'surprise' factor that Resident Evil had. But that isn't scary, it just gives you a little shock that's over in two seconds. Silent Hill has constant, disturbing images and sounds that unceaselessly barrage your senses. A little girl crying in the distance, creaking doors, panting doctors and moaning nurses, all with their skin ripped off. A terrifying soundtrack that seems to rise in volume as the world around you melts into a bloody hell. Bloody bodies hang on the wall, giggling demon-children, invisible enemies you could have sworn were there a second ago. All combined to scare the living day lights out of you. The game adds more disturbing images by lowering the visibility. You stumble through the dark as SOMETHING creeps toward you, your radio blares white noise as you run down a hallway with only a small flashlight to light your way, and the ever constant fog that blocks your view, even though you know something is nearby. To complete the detail of the game, strange symbols appear, and disturbingly psychotic poems are found on gory desks, things out of Lewis Carrol. Throughout the whole game, day and night interchange as you go through Hell and Silent Hill. Until the sun stops rising, and you must complete the game with only your flashlight to save you. The game, in short, is fantastic, and has great replay value due to secrets and hidden weapons.

What a perfect day to review a dreary, scary classic video game. This is one of those rainy, cold and windy April days. We have them every year. After being teased with exceptionally warm weather a couple days ago, days like today make you realize how lucky you are to experience warmer than normal temperatures. I could sit here and talk about the weather all day (and I probably will after this review is finished) but it's time to review a game that was groundbreaking at the time of its release. A game that was VERY disturbing then, and just as disturbing today.

For those of you older gamers who've been playing games way before Silent Hill was released, I bet you've played games that had their share of creepy moments- a certain memorable level in a video game that you've always felt uncomfortable exploring because you just didn't think you'd be able to calm your nerves when you arrive to that area of the game. Come on now, you can tell me it's "just a video game" but when everyone leaves your bedroom, and it's just YOU in front of your TV screen playing a video game late at night, you're bound to come across SOMETHING in SOME game that will frighten you. Now imagine if an ENTIRE game featured TOTAL nonstop adrenaline-pumping fear. A game that strikes fear inside of you like no other. We're talking about a game that forces you to think about death, and really frightens that little part inside of your head that you thought had been permanently laid to rest once you entered your teenage years. This game brings back every childhood fear and then adds some more.

This is truly a game for the strong-gutted. It's true that the level of fear in this game is so high that you will constantly be looking over your shoulder whenever you begin to feel frightened- you will be looking down the hallway of your home and looking out the window to make sure nothing is there. You want to make sure all those noises you are hearing are coming from the game and not under your bed or somewhere else in your home. I never thought it was possible to create fear in such a way and pull it off successfully in a video game, but that's what Silent Hill is all about. Believe it or not, I really think this game is scarier than any movie I've ever watched, and that includes classics like the Exorcist and the Ring. That's because, in the world of video games, you can picture yourself as the main character (Harry) and picture what it must be like for him to visit a town like Silent Hill and the amount of fear that must be going through both you and Harry. You see, because you, the gamer, are controlling Harry, it's not just Harry going through the dreaded town of Silent Hill by himself, it's YOU and Harry. You two have to stick together and make it out alive. Both of you have to put those scary feelings aside and progress through the game.

There's a little something that makes this game even scarier- the sound of hearing an enemy coming closer to you but not being able to find it. Many times it will be too late and the enemy will have found you first, and you'll take an unexpected blow. That's not to say the game is a frustrating experience with enemies coming out of nowhere cheap-shotting you, but occasionally it will happen, and this makes the game a LOT of fun. It makes the atmosphere so real and intense you can almost taste it. If you like entering the world of survival horror and thriller movies, this is the game for you.

Just picture this- you're walking down a street in an empty town. It's snowing, and it's quiet all around you. Suddenly you hear wings flapping far off in the distance. You stop dead in your tracks. The sound becomes louder and louder as *something* gets closer and closer to you. You quickly check all around you to try and see if you can find where that sound is coming from, but you don't see anything. A scream is heard from far away, a demon-like scream, and then another louder scream soon follows. Before you know it, you see giant flapping wings right above you, attacking your head. Your instinct is to defend yourself, but when you turn and aim the gun, the enemy is nowhere to be seen. You continue to hear flapping sounds and prepare yourself for another round with the beast. But the sounds get softer and softer until they disappear. You ask yourself "is it gone, is it over???" while continuing to hold your gun in the air. Sometimes during these moments the enemy WILL be gone, other times it will trick you into thinking it's gone but then come back for another fight. And this is just in the DAYTIME part of the game! Imagine how much harder and more frightening this battle becomes when the sky suddenly turns dark and the enemies want to come out and play. That's what makes the game so great- you just don't know what to expect.

Or how about when you arrive to the hospital? You enter a hospital and no one is around. Once again, everything is quiet. It's not so scary, but it's definitely eerie, and it makes you cautious. You think about what might be ahead of you. You don't want to explore this hospital but you HAVE to if you want to finish the game. You look outside the hospital window to see snow still falling to the ground, just as it was before you entered the hospital. Not so scary, but MAYBE I would feel better if I could find someone. This hospital is just a LITTLE too empty for me!

You explore all the rooms, find some clues, and arrive to an elevator. You click to go to the third floor but the door is locked, so you have to go back. You try the second floor and once again, you can't go through the door so you have to go back to the elevator. You think to yourself "okay, this is just strange". Back inside the elevator, for some unexplainable reason, a 4th floor suddenly becomes an option, so you go there. You ask yourself "was that 4th floor ALWAYS there?" This time, when you come out of the elevator the door isn't locked, and you're allowed to enter the floor. Once you enter that floor you WISH that calm, snowy daytime scenery from a few moments ago was still around because now you're in a dark haunted hospital surrounded by nurses with knives constantly slashing at you, floors that have been turned into gates and dreary walls soaked in blood all over every room in the hospital, and the music that plays here is simply amazing the way it makes you think about blood just waiting to ooze from all over the place. It scares you so much you just want to throw up, and there's no avoiding it- you can't turn back now. It's a total nightmare!

I know the Playstation's old graphics look dated by todays standards and many people have a problem with them, but this game is an exception because the grainy graphics really add more fear and excitement to the game. It makes it so, no matter where you go, you're surrounded by this world of dreariness. The level of fear doesn't let up at ALL throughout the entire game- you are forced to either get used to it or else turn off the game if you can't handle it. I honestly believe there's nothing to be ashamed of if you can't handle it. Many people can't watch horror movies because after the movie is over and they turn the television off, they're afraid of the silence. Every little sound they hear after the movie is over will make them jump and yell "what was THAT!!"

Silent Hill features a variety of fears- you have the "boogeyman in the closet/sleeping with the light on" type of fear, and the other major and more dangerous "please don't make me think about death because I don't know what happens when I die" type of fear. It's important to realize, no matter how frightened you may be, in the end you're only playing a video game. I don't want anyone to go crazy letting the amount of fear in Silent Hill get the best of them, and walk around all day light-headed and nervous. It's just a game (and you may think I'm exaggerating, but I'm honestly not- it's very well possible Silent Hill could bother you days after you play it).

But you have to give a lot of credit to all the people that brought this game to the Playstation- they set out to make the ultimate psychological horror experience, and they succeeded. It was groundbreaking at the time because no other game company at the time dared to attempt to turn up the amount of horror that this game offered. It was revolutionary in the world of video games. With all due respect to Capcom and the Resident Evil series... those games are fantastic and a lot of fun, but Silent Hill made the amount of fear so high that many gamers are afraid to not only play it, but even THINK about it.

I think the one thing that makes the experience so overwhelming is the music. In the final level of the game you will come across some atmospheric parts that sound exactly like an evil wind blowing right by you (and I mean YOU, not Harry Mason). That's an incredible sound right there. I'm not someone who usually exaggerates but the creators of this game may have surprised themselves with this constant flow of creepiness!

Silent Hill also offers plenty of other things. A good (but confusing) story, plenty of enemies to shoot with your three guns (or smash with your hammers and swords) and fantastic attention to detail in every area of the game. Truly deserving of 5 stars.

I just rented this game about two days ago, and with a little company from one of my friends, I was able to beat it quickly and still get amazingly scared. The graphics are decent, the cut scenes are amazing for it's release date. I don't know if I'd buy it, since I could rent it for five days, beat it in one, play it over the next day, and get my fill out of it before even returning it.
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of the five was for the story. I had no idea what the heck happened in Silent Hill, even after I beat it. I rented all three, and I have yet to beat them. This one was amazingly scary, and worth checking out, the second is even more horrifying from what I've seen.
All in all, this game is highly worth it for fans of horror games, and in my opinion, better than resident evil.

Best console game ever!!!!!!!

I bought Silent Hill a couple of months ago as it's now part of the Greatest Hits series. This must be one of the most enthralling, intense games I've ever played. Not to mention the downright creepiest. This game really pushes the limits of the 32-bit Playstation and really astounds visually. The town of Silent Hill is rendered in full 3D and looks amazing. The fog, snow and rain effects are very realistic.

The FMVs are probably the best that a 32-bit system could produce.

Music and sound is excellent and will really send a shiver up your spine. The controls will take some getting used to, but once you're used to them it's not difficult to control Harry.

The game sends you back and forth between two "realities": The real world and the nightmare world. The normal Silent Hill is a dark, deserted lonely place that's creepy enough as it is. The nightmare world on the other hand looks like it's straight from the pits of hell. It's always dark. Your only light comes from your flashlight which only illuminates about three feet in front of you. The locations look like they came straight out of a Hellraiser movie.

The story is where Silent Hill really shines. Unlike most video games where the story is just second rate, Silent Hill's plot will intrigue and make you want to finish the game as soon as possible just so you can find out what's up with this town.

If you own a Playstation or Playstation 2 and you like absorbing games that will chill you to the bone, check out Silent Hill. It will keep you hooked and may make you want to sleep with the lights on.

This game is definitely a keeper. I did not find it to be predictable and I was on the edge of my seat. The graphic images in conjunction with the intense music were enough to give me nightmares...in a good way! I was disturbed by many of the creatures and images, although I was compelled to continue to the end. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a game that scares them, gets in their head, and makes their palms sweat.

Ok let me start off with THIS GAME CAN BE VERY DISTURBING. It is a combination of puzzles survival, and a whole lot of Satan. This game is one of best survival horror games I have ever played. The story takes place in the little town of Silent Hill. This little sunny town has a dark history. It was inhabited by a bunch of crazed Satanists which you will find more and more about. The city eventually burned down mysteriously and many died. Except for one little girl who suffers much much pain. Years later Harry Mason and his daughter were going to vacation in silent hill. A police woman passed them earlier on a motor bike. Later on that night Hary's young daughter is sound asleep and Harry was fine himself, but he soon saw the police woman's bike and suddennly in the middle of the rode a strange figur appears and that is the beggining of Harry's graphic horrifying Quest to find out what happened to this city. Harry continues to go inbetween two worlds, the normal Silent Hill and as me and my friends call the other world that is the same but is "Satan World". You must make sure these two worlds do not merge. This game has for different ending guarenteed to leave you thinking, happy, confused, or permanently traumatized. In some cases it might leave Harry DEAD. This game has enough scares to leave you continuously playing. This game is a game you should definetely buy. I had to rent it 4 times to beat it 2 different ways. WARNING: THIS GAME IS OBSESSIVE

By FAR the scariest game I've ever played

The survival horror genre has long been one of my favorites, and is, quite honestly why I bought a Playstation in the first place. I saw an ad for Squaresoft's Parasite Eve in Rolling Stone a few years ago, and ran right out and bought me a unit, along with XenoGears and Resident Evil.

I've played a lot of Playstation games since then, but none has matched the level of intensity and sheer horror of Silent Hill. This game earned the five star rating that I gave it. I only hope this review will convey just how good it is.

The game opens with a stunning (although somewhat confusing) intro of a man and his daughter driving along a mountain road in an SUV at night. The SUV gets passed by a policewoman on a motorcycle. A few curves later, he sees the motorcycle overturned on the side of the road. Looking up, he sees a girl standing in the middle of the road. Swerving to miss her, the SUV goes careening into the ditch and rolls over. The intro is intermingled with other cut-scenes from the game. These make no sense when you first see them, but I found myself watching the intro again and again as I went through the game.

Some time later (daylight now) he awakens, and notices that his daughter is missing. He staggers from the truck and into a nearby city - Silent Hill.

The object of the game is to track down your daughter. You hunt around Silent Hill looking for your daughter. The city is almost completely deserted, it's snowing, and there's a fog that prevents you from seeing more than a few yards in front of you. If that's not bad enough, the city is full of rabid dogs, and flying things that look like pteridactyls or really big bats.

Not only that, but you keep sliding between the real Silent Hill and an entirely too eerie, pitch black nightmare version of Silent Hill. All you can see is what your flashlight shows you, and let me just say that when little demon children come after you out of the dark, you'll be calling for your mama. These little demon kids (they travel in pairs - one grabs you around the legs so you can't move, and the other comes up and starts stabbing), the poor nurse, and a deranged old woman you meet in the story are probably the most memorable characters and creatures I've seen in a game.

The game is played in the third person ala Lara Croft, and like Tomb Raider, is a straight up adventure game. The controls were easy to learn, and pretty straight-forward.

The music is tremendous. It's one of the few games I know that has it's own soundtrack CD available! The music used for the intro sets the mood of the game perfectly.

Of course, all games have their down-sides. This one doesn't have much to pick on, but there are a few little things. First, the graphics aren't that great. The fog's there for a reason - they can't render 3d objects more than a few yards away from you.

Also, some of the cut-scenes from the introduction aren't in the game anywhere, and make no sense on their own. This is kind of annoying - these scenes are really bizarre, and it would be nice to know what they meant. Maybe I missed some parts of the game.

Finally, like many adventure games, Silent Hill was quite linear. A lot of the game was finding a key to open a door so that you could kill some stuff, find another key, open the next door, etc.

But all in all, if you're at all a fan of Resident Evil style games, this one's for you. A warning that the game was given a Mature rating by the ESRB, and it is deserved. While the game has no swearing (that I can remember), or nudity, the mood is very, very dark and intense.

Think twice about playing this game if you live alone, or if your pacemaker doesn't have fresh batteries.

Simply The Best RPG/Horror Game On The Market

Buy the game, wait untill midnight, turn off the lights and load Silent Hill on your playstation. You'll find yourself totally absorbed in the creepy town of Silent Hill (where all the streets are named after horror writers). Where is your daughter? Whats with the mist? Where have the towns people gone? Trying to find the answers of these questions only lead to more questions as to whats really going on and then the horror sets in. Well, most of the horror is actually just suspense - especially when the static on your transistor radio detects a Winged Beastie or one of those mutant zombie killer dogs. Some of the music is pretty creepy too - like the Sonic Youth inspired distorted feedback (and with 3 SY band members mentioned by name in the game I wonder if maybe they even contributed to the score). The game is a little short but I liked that the game wasn't too hard to finish, unless you want to get a good ending wich may take a little longer. If you like a little horror now and then its a pretty safe bet you'll enjoy this game.

If you think video games are not an option if you want the poo scared out of you then think again! Silent Hill brings out all of the eliments of a great horror movie and more. When you first play this game all that will show are the bad graphics and sloppy control...for about the first five minuts. Then you will start to see the way the game plays with you'r mind and you will be hooked. In the start of the story you,Harry Mason, get into a car crash.A very scary, real life experience that some of you reading this have been through. Then he finds his daughter is missing(now you parents out their think about that one for a moment). Now lets talk about how Silent Hill freaks you out even during game play. The game is a true masterpiece,in that most of it is set in worlds that have limmeted view.one alternate reality is set in a foggy dream world. With enimies around every corner. You can't see them, but they are their. And YOU know it.Another world is set in a rainy realm of darkness where you'r only source of light is a single pocket flashlight! The worlds in Silent Hill are made to make you fell uncomfortable, and they do just that! This is why I love this game.Okay, for those of you in it for the violence and gore this game has buckets of blood n' brains ready to spill from a zombie child's head to a winged deamon's beak! The weapons are kind of odd,but the again...so is the whole game. You start off with a handgun and work you'r way up to more odd weapons like a big, red, long handeled rock hammer. It is the best weapon in the game! You bring it over the top of your'r head and bring it down on the top of you'r enimies heads. With the result of a large splash of blood as you'r reward. And now last(if you have read this far)is the games audio. This is what makes the game so great. It is mostly just noise really.Matallic screaching and low bassy undertones make the sound a ten on my list.Well I hope after reading my review you know a little more about the game than you did before.Thank you for you'r time, and pick up a copy of Silent Hill. You will be so happy you'll scream...

Possible best survival/horror title ever, for any system/PC!

I'll be honest with you. When I first got Silent Hill, I wasn't really sure how great it was going to be. I had heard about other horror games like Resident Evil, but I never took much of an interest. I figured S.H. would be the same...WRONG!!! This is, without a doubt, arguably the best survival/horror game ever. Why you ask? Simple, it combines all the right ingredients needed to instill the player with a constant sense of fear and foreboding. There are no dry, dull spots in the game. Not from the very beginning, to the very end! No time when you get bored with it or fall back in your chair. This game keeps you on the edge constantly! It's the stuff horror movies are made of. In fact, this game has kept me on the edge better than any big Hollywood film I've ever seen. Harry Mason is the perfect character for the job. He's no one special, just your average Joe. No special skills, just a normal guy in an abnormal situation. One night, after setting out on a vacation with his seven year old daughter, Harry swerves to avoid a stranger who appears ahead in the road. Knocked unconscious after losing control, Harry wakes to find his daughter missing, and a mysteriously abandoned town lying ahead. Right from the start, you are thrown into a fight for your life. The atmosphere is dark and down-right frightening. So many things add to the constant fear you experience while playing. The town is soaked with blood, and for no apparent reason. Everyone is missing, and yet vehicles are still parked on the street, and houses and yards are as if no one had even gone. The music in this game is amazing, and I'm quite a critic. There are so many sounds and creepy noises throughout the whole game that change as the atmosphere changes, and that will keep you on the brink of running and calling for your mommy. The few people who you do meet in the town will leave you with more questions, and an even greater sense of urgency to find your little girl. And as if all this wasn't enough, the game is literally filled with perplexing puzzles and riddles that you must solve. Technically speaking, Silent Hill is very well done. The graphics aren't the best in the world, but never the less good for the PSX. Most of the scenes are draped in fog or darkness, thus obscuring from view most of the areas that have the slightly course graphics. The game play is excellent, packed with action. It is true that some of the camera angles make it difficult to do battle; however, this disadvantage is certainly made-up for with the great views you get through the game. All this, combined with a constantly unfolding storyline and the possibility of 4 different endings, make the game a truly crowning achievement. This isn't the kind of game you play when you have 20 friends over, and the stereo is blasting. To get the full range of the game, I recommend playing it at night (with the lights off), and with the volume turned way up. This is an EXCELLENT game!! One of the best I have ever played, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting, puzzling, and very involved game that will seriously leave you with a sense of awe. After winning Silent Hill, you're going to feel as if there's nothing you can't do!!!
