When I first got this game, I was amazed. I'm not exactly a horror-fan type, but I can recognize a true horror game when I buy one. In the game, you play Harry Mason, who is going for a vacation in Silent Hill with his daughter, Cheryl. He crashes, and when he wakes up, Cheryl is gone. The whole point of this game is to find Cheryl. Sounds simple, yes? .. It's not.
Not only is this game terror, but it's mystery, too. You just don't run around and shoot things while random things scare you. You have to use your mind to figure our puzzles, or else you'll really never get anywhere in the game. And in this game, you're not a spy, you're not a warrior ; you're an average guy. What's amazing about this game is that it takes the supernatural.. and makes it realistic. In the game, you are not told what is going on. You are confused in the game ; just like the main character. You both have no clue what is going on and must figure it out. That's what is amazing.
The graphics are very good for a Playstation game. I heard the fog was used to compress the size, but really, it adds an effect of "Where am I going?" constantly. The only thing that wasn't very good, was the blood. It kind of looked kind of chunky. Besides that, everything else was awesome. Graphics were great.
The music.. oh boy, where to get started with the music? The music, is simply amazing. The game just wouldn't be the same without the music. In the day, or the night, the music still makes the game scary. Constantly. It adds effect, it adds suspense. That truely is a great composer.
Another nice feature was the white noise for the enemies. I've heard alot of reviews where people complain about this, but I think it was a nice add-on. I think without the white noise it wouldn't be as suspensful. When you have the white noise on it makes you really nervous when playing the game which adds on the effect.
The only complaint I have, about this whole game, was the play control. I hated how the play control was. It was annoying. It took me a very long while to get used to it.
But don't let the play control stop you, this is an amazing game for the Playstation. One of the best horror games, in my opinion.
A Truly Frightening Experience

Upon starting the game, I first let the game attract sequence run its course. I found the FMV sequences very impressive, and they set the story of the game in a deceptive sort of way. When I gained control of the character, I felt the controls to be just a bit jerky and sluggish. However when I got that down, it wasn't so bad. Only in a few areas when you find yourself needing to move Harry suddenly in one direction. The game has many dramatic camera angles, that, even though create further mobility problems, greatly add to the whole effect. Seriously, you need NERVES to get through this game. The graphics are impressive, a little grainy, but the attection to detail is marvelous. The rain falls and makes splashes on any surface, all shops have authentic markings, and I once shot a harpy whilst standing near the lake, and heard it fall with a splash into the murky depths. What ultimatly sets Silent Hill from the other survival horror games is the fright factor, It is very high and MUCH more frightening than the others. Its not the story that is frightening, its simply looking for monsters in the dark, hearing them nearby, and suddenly finding them behind you. Dont play in the dark. Not reccommended for young children. Im addicted to this game...maybe that has something to do with my recent development of insomnia?
Still crazy, after all these years...

There's something about this quiet little resort town that seems to draw all the darkness together into one place, all the madness from deep-seated nightmares into one name: Silent Hill. The name itself evokes visions of twisted creatures and primal fears come to life, and it's been this way for years, after four games, several comic series, and a feature film. But here is where it all started, the game that introduced us to the little town of Silent Hill.
It begins with a compelling hook -- Harry Mason is driving along a lonely road with his seven year-old daughter Cheryl, when he is driven from the road and crashes. When he regains conciousness, Cheryl is gone, and Harry is stuck in Silent Hill. The rest of the game becomes an increasingly desperate search for Harry's daughter, leading not only into the depths of the town and its many secrets, but also into his own past and into the depths of his sanity.
As Harry travels through the town he meets other characters - Cybil Bennett, a police officer also trapped in the town like him, Dahlia Gillespie, priestess of an ancient religion, Lisa Garland, a nurse haunted by something she has seen, and Alessa, a girl who seems to be at the center of the mystery of the town itself. He amasses weapons to fight the many creatures in the town, twisted creations of a demented mind, and finds objects to help him solve puzzles along the way. And as he progresses, he travels between worlds...from this world's dangers to the warped Otherworld of Silent Hill, where nothing seems to make sense but everything is connected.
Even playing Silent Hill today, in the time of hyper-realistic games, full-scale production on par with Hollywood, and high-definition graphics, the original Silent Hill still stands the test of time. It is challenging, and production values are high given the limitations of the time it was made. The original Playstation graphics may seem a little choppy by modern standards, but in a way this works for the game too, giving it a surreal quality as Harry's perspective shifts from one reality to another. There is a minimalistic approach to the look of the whole game that works for it rather than against it -- the old concept that the less you show, the greater the potential fear is. Voice acting is a little shaky, but this is more than made up for by the quality of mood-setting sound effects and music which create a constant (and ever-escalating) sense of dread.
In the world of survival-horror games, some go for the gore-fest and others for cheap thrills. Silent Hill stands apart, as a game that tells a compelling story and accompanies every moment of that story with a shot of pure, creeping fear. It's not the kind of game to make you feel queasy or get your heart pumping, but it evokes the feeling of shivers running up your spine like cold fingers and skin that doesn't seem to feel comfortable anymore on your bones.
There's a reason the very name of Silent Hill makes people quiver just a little. Take a look at where it all began and find out for yourself.
Not a RE killer, but still very good

This game is the first true threat to Capcom and it's RE series. The atmosphere has to be the best part of Silent Hill. It's just phenomenal. It plays like a Stephen King book. And it stays with you even after you turn it off. All I can say is,this could make a terrific movie. The puzzles in the game start off mind numbingly stupid, but get tough, real tough, as the game goes on. I finished the game without a walkthrough, but I had to think. Neanderthals need not apply. The story really draws you in, and it's neat that your charecter isn't some gun toting commando who never misses. On the other hand, this game never made me jump out of my chair, or gasp, like RE, and that is somewhat disappointing. The also just lacks that something that RE seems to have. You don't know what it is but it just feels like somethings missing. Still, it's an excellent game, and though i still prefer RE to it, this game runs a very close second.

that is the first thing you will find. This game is like resident evil in genre alone. If this could have been a movie made by anyone the two prime canidates for it would have been hitchcock or serling. It isnt horror and in your face blood all the time like resident evil. There is a great deal of suspense and visual trickery going on and before you know it you just died. The four different endings(five if you count the aliens) are a definite reason to keep playing over and over.

There is no way to do a review on this game without first mentioning that it is a) A survival horror game and b) similar to Resident Evil. But, at the same time, the two games are completely different. Resident Evil was based on the George Romero zombie classics, while it seems Silent Hill is based on something similar to Dean Koontz or Clive Barker. In the first few minutes of game play, you are attacked by little demonic children weilding carving knives after being trapped in an alley filled with gore. Pretty creepy? Like I said, that's only the beginning. Soon you are wandering the demon infested town of Silent Hill searching for your missing daughter. This game can be confusing at times, some of the puzzles were poorly defined to me and I had to resort to strategy guides in a few areas. Other then that, the challenge lies mostly in collecting all of the secret weapons and the multiple endings. There is much more replay value then the RE games, but not much more. Sure, it's nice to get a hold of the alien lazer, but then what..... If you're a big fan of survival horror games, get it. You wont be disapointed.

You wanna talk about a frightening game that's just downright disturbing, Holy [...]. Think about some of the weirdest, scariest, and creepiest things maybe possible, that's this. Silent Hill, a very first of it's kind, and a momumental breakthrough and undertaking from Konami, unlike other companies that would not have the guts to delve this deep into the evil darkness of the mind. Harry Mason still to this day distraught over the death of his wife several years ago decides to take his daughter cheryl for a late vacation to the town of Silent Hill, but loses her after a car crash leaves him stranded on the outskirts of this town. While trying to find his daughter he roams a fog filled town during the day, but once the air raid siren breaks the quietness a downright bizzare, and dark horror fills buildings and streets with stuff you wouldn't want to even see in your nightmares. And I wish I could say I was exxagerating. I got this game by just bad memory I guess. A zip up cd wallet was left in my apartment by one of my roomates friends containing some Playstation(2)games, including Silent Hill 2 also. With the fact that there's nothing to easily visible with the light on, and how coarse and old the graphics were, and the fact you can hear a creature nearby but not be able to tell exactly where it is is what led me to stop playing it a few years ago. I was SERIOUSLY too freightened to play it. That's no lie or exageration. This my best friend can tell you too. I saw the movie and thought, I saw the movie, I might at well play and this time finish the game. and I beleive at this point I'm close to being just as far as I was before I quit playing. This game is not for people with weak stomachs or people that get scared esily or don't like being scared. I'n my opinion the scariest game you could play, and not just scary, but disturbing, as the stuff in the game would come from a very very dememnted mind. I've never really seen another game pull off what this one has. This game beats the hell out of most scary movies I've seen, lol.
THE scariest video game ever created!!!!

Back in 2002, I had never really played any kind of survival horror game ever in my life. A friend of mine came over to my house and brought Silent Hill and the Playstation. I was just watching and I really liked how it had snow falling out in the town in the summer nonetheless, it looked like a really scary game. Then, months later, I borrowed this game from my friend and played from the beginning and didn't get really far because I really didn't know what to do. Finally, one night, when my friend was back over at my house, I was playing and he was sitting there watching and we were playing with surround sound, the lights off and no one else was in the house. From the very beginning alley, I was very scared! So I get to the school, Midwich Elementary School, and everything looks normal. My friend who was watching kept telling me that once I go through the Clock Tower, I will be back at Midwich Elementary and that it will be the same school but at the same time, it wouldn't be the same school and at that point, I was really starting to freak out. I had no idea what horrors were waiting for me!
I go through the Clock Tower and I hear these really creepy sirens, I'm to the point where I want to turn the game off but my friend was with me and kept telling me to move on. So I start to go into the school and once I'm in, I'm freaking out! All the floors were replaced by metal grates with nothing below them, the walls were like chained fences, everything covered in blood, pure horror and terror!! I was really scared by the visuals and the music. Something really creepy in the Alternate school is when you go into one of the bathroom's on the first floor, you end up on the second floor, creepy!!! Just everything that I saw and heard in every room and corridor scared me to death!!
I turned the game off after I was done in the school and couldn't sleep with the light off!! I did eventually play through the whole game and beat it but I have never been so scared playing a video game in my entire life!!! The really scary music and sound effects play a big part. But what's really scary isn't just the atmosphere, the music or visuals. It freaks me out thinking about why the town of Silent Hill is deserted and how Samael came along. If I think about this stuff before I go to sleep, a lot of times, I can't sleep. The Alternate Hospital, Alchemilla Hospital is another really scary place in the game that really scared me too but not as bad as the school. To be honest, when I first was going through the Alternate school, the way it looked, that's what I thought hell would look like, it was so scary. To this day, it scares me! Sometimes even with the light on, it's scary!! Even though the graphics aren't the best, this Silent Hill game scares me more than Silent Hill's 2, 3 or 4 and they have better graphics!!! I would not recommend this game to anyone who scares easily!

Just like movies some games remain timeless and just as influential today as they did back when they were released and Silent Hill is one of those games.
I had finished the game again a few weeks ago and just like the first time I played it, the second time still gave me all the thrills and shrieks from the first time.
Konami's survival game made into a movie last year just hits it in the ballpark in every category. The graphics are outdated for sure but they are passable. The eerieness and morbid nature the game has is all done convincingly. I'am glad I heard about the game and since I have gone on to play the other games from 2, 3 and 4. Harry Mason is likeable enough persona to enjoy through the game. The other characters from Lisa to Dr. Kaufman and Cybill Bennet all leave a mark as well.
The controls are the typical easy controls you would get in something like Resident Evil. It's a great example that you don't have to put everything in the game to make it cool just the basics. The multiple endings are also a great bonus that added replayability to an already great game.
Anyways, this is a classic.
