Now that I have the attention of half the idiots posting comments here. 1.) If your not using an up to date machine, don't complain about the way the game runs. Get a life and go buy a real PC. Meeting just the minimum requirements does not cut it. 2.) For those of you who suck at playing games, we know who you are as you cannot win or play any game with similar control features... Don't give up your day job, do, give up trying to play games. You'll just end up frustrated with life and will most likely become a Liberal whiner and try to control the world, worry about if trees feel pain, cry for dead animals, and such other worthless crap. Oh, and.... the damn controls are customiseable, but you would not know unless you knew how to read the damn instructions!! Then you have the gall to complain because your an idiot. GO AWAY!!

I have played some frustrating games, but this one takes the prize. I think it all began way back when Eidos promised this game in November 2002 and kept pushing back its release until June 2003. But the question is, what the heck were they doing all that time? It sure doesn't look like they worked out all the bugs or did enough testing. Here's my rundown:

The Good:
New look for Lara with new outfits
Additional character Kurtis (though he is slow moving and feels heavy on the controls)

Better environments in which to play. No more 1980's technology in the design.
Challenging play requiring actual thought.
Lara's helpful commentary during the game.
Choice-making in dialog segments that determine outcome of gameplay.

The Bad:
See-through enemies - didn't someone in design notice this?
Unresponsive/sluggish controls - I can't tell you how many times I yelled "take out your gun!" while I am pushing the gun key and the character just stands there like a dope. Otherwise, there would be a 1/2 second delay before the action was carried out. This is especially apparent during confrontation with enemies - just the time when you need the controls to be speedy.
There are times when your character needs to book it fast and he/she just sort of saunters a few steps before leisurely meandering into a light jog. Run!!!!!
Bugs- in which the game would switch into a movie when I was in the middle of a level or it would skip a movie altogether and I wondered what the heck happened???

The Ugly:
Me, playing this game and banging my keyboard or screaming like a nut at the characters.

not for a middle of the road pc......

i tried playing this game on a pc slightly above minimum requirements and i would have been generous if i have given it even 2 stars..all the previous complaints and bad reviews are justified HOWEVER on a powerful p4 based machine with plenty of ram(keep it 512 or up) a hot graphics card(ati radeon 9800pro) made the game come to life-great graphics and i didnt have to much of a problem guideing lara around and i'm really only a novice player-i did miss that slide sideways action lara had in the older games and didnt really like the default controller assignment(i reconfigured it)i had a good time playing it overall though-just remember DO NOT BUY THIS GAME TO USE ON AN OLDER,SLOWER PC!!!

Classic Tomb Raiding, taken up a notch!

After reading all the bad press this game has been getting, I felt compelled to write a review myself. In all honesty, I must say this game is getting slammed unfairly.
I've been a fan of the TR games since the original, but I freely admit that some of them had their fair share of irritations, and by the time Chronicles came out, things were starting to seem a little uninspired. I say this so you know I'm not the sort of person to gush over anything that has the Tomb Raider logo emblazoned across the box.
Now, on to Angel of Darkness...
Core Design knew the series needed an overhaul, but they also knew they couldn't change things too drastically without upsetting long-time fans. So what we have here is a classic Tomb Raider experience with an all-new (and quite attractive) graphics engine, a bit more depth (dialogue-trees, deeper plot), and some simplified controls to make it easier to navigate the TR world.
Yes, that's right, I said the controls are EASIER this time around. I cannot fathom why so many people are complaining about the control scheme. In essence, it's identical to one found in every other TR game, but it doesn't require your fingers to be quite as nimble. For example, when climbing a ladder or a wall, you no longer have to hold down two keys at once. Same with walking. Want to climb over that box in front of you? No need to press some weird key combination, simply walk up to it and keep on walking, and Lara automatically hitches herself on to it.
A lot of people complained about the vast number of bugs and the drops in frame-rate. Maybe I just got very lucky, but so far I've experienced only minimal bugs (nothing that interfered with gameplay), and I did not experience any drops in frame-rate at all... everything runs very smoothly, and Lara is quick to respond to keystrokes. I'm running this on a Pentium 4, 1.8ghz, 256 megs ram, 64 meg GEForce2 graphics card, so it's hardly a cutting edge system by today's standards, yet I can't complain about the performance at all.
AOD offers some great environments to explore. The beginning of the game is somewhat mundane, as you run through the back streets of Paris, but it's a good way to get a feel for things before you're in any significant danger. Then you're off to raid the Louvre, which is brilliantly atmospheric, and before long, you find yourself in some classic tombs. The gameplay in the tombs is among the best the series has seen, reminding me very much of the thrills I got back in 1996 when I first worked my way through St. Francis Folly in the original game. From here, the adventure heads off to other exciting locales, which I won't spoil for you, but suffice to say, there's plenty to see and do.
I recommend this game whole-heartedly to Tomb Raider fans. My only warning is that I know a lot of people have experienced significant bugs, and I suppose it's somewhat of a gamble when you buy the game because you may be lucky (as I was), or you may have problems. If you're one of the lucky ones, you'll have a great time playing one of the best TR games in the series. If you're unlucky, well, hopefully you can trade it somewhere.

Absolutely awful controls! DO NOT BUY

I am a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series, and have played all five other games on my PC. I love them. I was so excited to get this one, and sooooo disappointed with the quality. Glitchy glitchy glitchy. Do not buy this game. The controls are terrible. While all other 5 games play out smoothly, this one is slow, stalls, goes blank some times, and takes minutes to load to new chapters. Now I don't have a fancy schmancy computer, but I have been able to play all the other games on it just fine without any hitch. This is just crap. It makes me feel like I have to go buy a $2000 computer just to be able to play this $30 game! It probably runs better on a PS 2, so if you have one of those don't bother with the PC version. Thanks a lot Eidos, I totally wasted time and money and am warning future buyers to BEWARE!

Cutting edge technology does not a great game make. This game is proof.

The graphics are beautiful, which accounts for the extra star for the overall rating. If you are a Tomb Raider fan, you will absolutely hate this game, as I do. The controls, the plot, and the movements are maddening, boring and confusing, respectively. Eidos could plug Tomb Raider 1 into this engine and have a much more interesting game.

Maxim magazine gave this game 5 stars. A good reason to ignore Maxim's ratings.

I'm not strong enough!

I am a die hard Tomb Raider fan. You know, got all the games and always have much fun playing them. My first TR was TR 2, The Dagger of Xian, you know, the Marco Bartoli game, that I got the year that came out, 1997. I was astounded by the graphics perfection, the camera views, the story, the magic, so I bough TR debut, and after, you know, came 3, The Last Revelation and Chronicles(the best TR game EVER!), and also all the extra levels of each other, I think I can call myself a TR fanatic. I always think Core and Eidos would never hurt us with a bad game. Geez, I was so wrong!

To start, why get out of something that was going fine? Why make Lara Croft analogue? And above all: why go to RPG style game? That's not the way the serie got it's popularity! Don't get me wrong, I love RPG games, Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Monkey Island, Vampire, I always have much fun with this kind of game. But the trying of the game to seems like a RPG game was awfully unwilling and unfun. Why not to keep the adventure style with just new improvements?

And most important: the story in this game doesn't have any logic! What the hell happened with Lara after the pyramid fall on The Last Revelation? Her instructor, Werner Von Croy found her backpack in the end of Chronicles, but haven't found her body... so what? Is she dead or alive?? The story on TLR really passes before TR 1? Witch period of her time line goes the Angel Of Darkness story? The serie doesn't make any sense anymore. I though the TR 6 would show the proud return of our heroin, back from Egypt, carried by Von Croy or her butler Jeeves, or at least show more of her adventure life with the sad confirmation that Lara passed out. Well, it seems that Lara really gone after all, and was replaced with her evil twin. They even didn't put the training level on her house, that I love to play. In the last two games, TLR and Chronicles it doesn't have, but it makes logic because Lara aren't with us the way we know her. But here, there's no excuse!

I am so disappointed with this game of the serie. I'll give another chance to Core to bring us a real TR game, one that continues the story started on TLR, or at least a good game. But if that doesn't happen, forget about me!

Can't wait!

Okay, we gave it 4 stars, but we would actually give it 5 stars! If it wasn't because we ARE a little afraid of getting disappointed. But this game really looks like it's going to be a blast! The story sounds interesting, the screenshots and concept arts are amazing, and so on ... we're two kids from Denmark, and we've played The Last Revelation and Chronicles. Great games, and it wouldn't be a surprise if this is going to be an even better game! What a relief that Lara's still alive - and with 5000 new polygons!! And the new outfit matches the one in the movie... P.S. Check out tombraiderchronicles.com, they've got everything on the game!

Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness (PC Version)

I purchased & played the PC version of Tomb Raider. This version has 2 CDs and both are required to install. The program will recognize your USB controller and will display it on the options screen. You can configure each button to your choice. I recommend that you use a Ten button controller. The directional control is a bit sensitive so be careful not to send Lara over the rail or short fence and have her fall to her demise. The graphics are a big imporovement from the previous versions and the animation is very smooth. The game play is much like the same as the previous five but there are a few new moves to become familiar with. I highly recommend purchasing the PC version it seems that EIDOS has made some improvements to the controls for the PC. Thank you EIDOS!

It's ok...

I've always enjoyed Tomb Raider games. But I bought this game, and it did not work on my computer. My computer didn't match the maximum requirements (which they don't show you until AFTER you open the box), but it did match the minimum requirements. I didn't buy this from amazon.com, but I bought it from a different store. They had this stupid policy that you can't get a full refund if you opened it. How the heck are you supposed to know that it doesn't work, if you can't open it?!

Anyway, after a while, I got a PS2. So I decided to try it on PS2. It worked, but it's not that fun. It's almost impossible to control Laura. There are certain points in the game that you have to be at an exact angle to jump onto a ledge, and you can spend like a half hour trying to jump onto the stupid ledge. It's also not that fun because one of the "cool new features" is that she can only hold on for a certain amount of time. If you want to stay on a ledge for longer, you need to break a window, or kick a door down. Then she looses her strength again.
